In the Rain King, I actually love Mulder's answer when Holman questions him and expresses surprise upon learning that Mulder and Scully are not in fact together.

"I'm perfectly happy about my relationship with Agent Scully."

My first reaction (as a shipper): "yeah, right!" And from the tone of the episode, I'm pretty sure it's meant to be read that way.

But then I started thinking about it more and, knowing Mulder, I don't think he is lying here. I genuinely believe that he is happy about his unique, hard-to-define bond with Scully, even if (maybe) a part of him wants more by then.

I have no fixed headcanon about when Mulder and Scully's relationship became romantic, or when it became romantic for them. When they started wanting more. It's very fun to speculate.

But more and more I think about how precious their relationship is, regardless of when they fell in love. Trusting someone with your life, going to Arctica or Antartica to rescue them, being by each other's side "in sickness and health", supporting each other and jeopardizing yourself for them, truly enjoying each other's presence and valuing each other... outside of a romantic relationship??? With no romantic afterthought or goals??? Out of genuine feelings of consideration, respect and appreciation??? Very special and rare.

Honestly the weirdest aspect of Mulder and Scully’s relationship is that they flirt harder the more disgusting or disturbing whatever they’re investigating is. Is there a corpse with a live frog inside? Let’s crack jokes and subtly imply how attracted to each other we are. What about a dead baby in a closet? Obviously that’s when we should have a barely coded conversation about Mulder’s dick, duh. Interrogating a sadistic murderer? Totally the appropriate time to eye-fuck each other over the interrogation table. Stuck in the woods being chased by mutated conquistadors? (God, this show is strange) Time to cuddle, joke about getting naked, and sing to each other. Could you be infected with a scary parasitic ice worm? Let’s feel each other’s necks up in the most erotic way possible under the guise of a medical exam. Truly no one is doing it like them and that’s probably a good thing

Fascinated by this fanon concept of Scully not being Mulder’s type. Type??? That man has no type. His type is ‘person who will hang out with me in basement.’ He is much too lonely to have a type lol

I think part of the fanon (or at least what I read in fanfiction) is that Scully thinks that she's not Mulder's type, based on the evidence she possesses (Phoebe, Diana, bambi...)

im watching The Lone Gunmen before i watch season 9 of txf and its kind of just been what you would expect, pretty good but not like an exceptional show, and then in the second to last episode they have very respectful representation of a trans woman and discussion of the effects of being outed by someone you trusted? in like 2001? this is so random and im very happy to see it but like where did this come from

sorry for xfiles posting on main again, but it's just endlessly amusing to me how chris carter, the most christian man alive except for maybe the pope, cast two of the world's horniest individuals on his show, and told them "your characters are never allowed to fuck under any circumstances. ever." so in response to that they were like. hmm but what if this scene where they check each other for alien worms is soo sexually charged. and and what if. they make this real intense eye contact over a corpse. also can we maybe film a makeout session just for kicks
