your father's legacy

You look at your father’s legacy. 

You don’t have to take it. 

You can still go. It would be better for you.

You can take what you’ve built by yourself, away from your father’s shadow, and run. Nobody will blame you. Some will look at you with pity that they’d disguise as understanding, but nobody will blame you. 

You stand in front of your father’s legacy. 

Your brother is leaving. Your sister is leaving. Your family is torn apart. 

Is it your duty to keep the family together? To be the one doing the sacrificing so that other people don’t have to?

Your father worked so hard to get all of you here that to throw it all away would have been to spit in his face. Choosing that other path would throw it all away.

You reach your hand towards your father’s legacy.

You have a choice, and yet, there is only one choice you can make. One choice you can live with yourself with. 

Inhale. Picture that life where you chose the path that would be best for you only. Exhale. Grieve that path that you know you’d never take. You grasp your father’s legacy, and take it.
