Music in Gaston Leroux‘s “The Phantom of the Opera“ - The original Phantom soundtrack
Music has always been an integral part of „The Phantom of the Opera“. Long before Andrew Lloyd Webber came along, Gaston Leroux put together his own „soundtrack“ for his novel and wove it into the story. He was very familiar with opera and often used music as a device of foreshadowing or adding subtext.
I have put together a playlist containing the most important pieces from the novel which can be found here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3N3HOQcCzKIH0D4UROxO0N?si=VYjQlsvsQ0OUQZD1dFt0gQ&dl_branch=1
For those who don‘t have Spotify, there are youtube links included as well. The songs are listed in order of appearance in the novel, and I have added a bit of background information for each piece. Enjoy 🌹!
Tracklist
1. „Ouverture“ from „Le roi de Lahore“ by Jules Massenet
In Chapter 1, the body of Joseph Buquet is found hanging from a set piece from „Le roi de Lahore“. Lahore is the capital of the Punjab, a province in what is now Pakistan (formerly India). Buquet was strung up on said set piece using the „punjab“ lasso. In this opera, a young priestess falls in love with the voice of a man who speaks to her in her room without showing himself, and commits suicide at the end to evade a forced marriage to his enemy.
Watch on youtube: https://youtu.be/mFc6_EHqAjk
2. „Danse macabre“ by Camille Saint-Saëns
The famous „Danse Macabre“ is part of the gala night programme. The piece is originally based on a poem by Henri Cazalis and is dominated by a solo violin. Its theme of „dancing with death“ ties in very well with the novel as a whole.
Watch on youtube: https://youtu.be/G-KSTWO5ir0
3. and 4. „Valse Lente“ from „Coppélia“ and „Pizzicato“ from „Sylvia“, both by Léo Delibes
Those pieces are also part of the gala night programme. In the novel, Leroux lists them as the „Pizzicati“ from „Coppélia“ and the „Valse Lente“ from „Sylvia“, but he apparently confused the two ballets, since there are no „Pizzicati“ in „Coppélia“ - but there is a famous Pizzicato in „Sylvia“. „Coppélia“ is a ballet about an automaton magically coming to life.
Watch on youtube: Coppélia: https://youtu.be/sVdf-1rgLzE, Sylvia: https://youtu.be/We7KAkWJow8
5. and 6. „Finale“ from „Roméo et Juliette“ by Charles Gounod (Part 1 + 2)
„Roméo et Juliette“ is the one of the most significant operas used in „Phantom“, together with „Faust“ and „Otello“. The finale is sung by Christine during her triumphant gala night performance. The line quoted („Seigneur! Seigneur! Pardonnez-nous!“) is the very last line of the opera. The intertwined themes of love and death and also the liebestod motif are reflected in Leroux‘s novel.
Watch on youtube: https://youtu.be/SnObknpiPQ0
7. „Vous qui faites l‘endormie“ from „Faust“ by Charles Gounod
When Box Five is sold to the public against Erik‘s wishes, he takes revenge by kindly letting the husband sitting there know that his wife is making out with her lover behind his back, causing a brawl between the two men. To insinuate the wife‘s infidelity, he references several lines from Mephisto‘s aria that is sung on stage at that time.
Watch on youtube: https://youtu.be/LO98x1ASbLM
8. „Lorsqu‘à toi je me suis donnée“ from „La Juive“ by Jacques Fromental Halévy
This part of „La Juive“ is sung and referred to by Madame Giry, while she is questioned about the opera ghost by the managers. However, the first part „Près de celle qui j‘aime“, while being mentioned in the synopsis on wikipedia, seems to be missing from the recordings I was able to find.
Watch on youtube: https://youtu.be/PcnUmYcZxf4
9. „Faites-lui mes aveux“ from „Faust“ by Charles Gounod
During the „cursed“ performance which ends with croaking Carlotta and the fall of the chandelier, Christine plays the role of Siebel, the young man who is Faust‘s rival for the affections of Marguerite (played by Carlotta). She sings this piece - also known as the „flower aria“ - when she suddenly notices Raoul in the audience, and her voice starts to falter.
Watch on youtube: https://youtu.be/zdS6kiWz-g0
10. „Nuit d‘hymenée“ from „Roméo et Juliette“ by Charles Gounod
After the masked ball, when Erik comes to meet Christine in her dressing-room, he sings the „wedding night song“ while he is walking through the secret passages and Christine follows him through the mirror. Originally, this is the song that Romeo and Juliet sing to each other during their wedding night. This is probably the most romantic and erotic duet used in the entire novel. The line „La destinée m‘enchaîne à toi sans retour/Destiny binds me to you forever“ (in Leroux, intentionally or not, given as „you to me“) is repeated three times in the novel, charging it with significance.
Watch on youtube: https://youtu.be/_X8LsHwJXfA
11. „Canzone del salice“ from „Otello“ by Gioachino Rossini
When Erik brings Christine to his house for the first time, he sings for her until she falls asleep, starting with the „Canzone del salice“ from „Otello“ - a lament about the cruelty of love. This aria is originally sung by Desdemona. Due to the introductory harp solo being mentioned by Christine and the story being set before 1885, the piece must be from Rossini‘s „Otello“, not the more famous Verdi opera.
Watch on youtube: https://youtu.be/eHZ6FoKhi2w
12. „Ouverture“ from „Don Giovanni“ by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
„Don Giovanni“ is only mentioned by Erik, when Christine asks him to play from his own „Don Juan Triumphant“, as the version he would rather play her instead since his „Don Juan“ is too consuming and would be „unhealthy“ for her. Erik does not seem to hold Mozart‘s version in very high regard.
Watch on youtube: https://youtu.be/3vnu-xOAM-Q
13. „Notte per me funesta“ from „Otello“ by Gioachino Rossini
During the unmasking scene, Christine (as Desdemona) is expecting to be murdered by Otello, and is actually enticed by the idea. Since „Notte per me funesta“ is the dramatic duet that ends with Otello stabbing Desdemona, I assume that this is the duet they are singing in this scene.
Watch on youtube: https://youtu.be/GsV7y5spyQk (this also includes the preceding duets, which were possibly sung as well)
14. „Finale“ from „Faust“ by Charles Gounod
When Erik abducts Christine from the stage, she is singing the final trio from Faust, imploring the angels to take her soul to heaven. The ambiguity of the „angel“ is clearly used here by Leroux, as the „Angel of Music“ is the one taking her away instead. The final trio is preceded by the duet „oui, c‘est moi, je t‘aime“ from the prison scene, which was also used in the Charles Dance version.
Watch on youtube: https://youtu.be/i2C4ezHUF1I
15. „Dies irae“ from „Requiem“ by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Following Philippe‘s death, Erik sings the „Dies irae“ from the requiem mass. It is not certain if the piece is really Mozart‘s, but this requiem was very widely used in funeral masses. The „dies irae“ itself is a chant dating back to medieval times. The „dies irae“ has also been incorporated into Erik‘s bedroom decor in the form of a wall hanging with the notes on it.
Watch on youtube: https://youtu.be/FGqoU9NIjZw
16. „Presago il core della tua condanna“ from „Aida“ by Giuseppe Verdi
This is a bonus track because it is not from the Leroux novel, but from „Phantom“ by Susan Kay. It is one of the pieces that is significant to Erik‘s and Christine‘s relationship. One of the quotes that Christine is buried with is from this duet („Foreseeing your condemnation into this tomb, in your arms I wish to die“).

Phans, I need your advice
Can anyone please recommend a good POTO fan fiction of moderate to long length? Leroux had the poor manners to die before writing a sequel or prequel. Thanks all
::squints::
You’re looking for Leroux compliant phic?
This is a tall order, dove. Most of the shit that’s Leroux compliant is dark as fuuuuuck…….,
Who do I know that might know? @likelightinglass @chris–daae
And @sparklyerik wrote a really adorable phic
But everything I can think of is so short…
I’m writing a Lerouxan prequel but it’s slow in process (there’s a lot of research)
*rolls in on a skateboard*
So I hear you want Leroux compliant fics?
Well, well, well.
Okay, to start, check out this community on FFN, Purely Leroux, theres a decent collection there, but the most recent one is from 2009 or so, and a lot of good ones have been posted since. So start there. Check out the Community section for Phantom of the Opera, there’s a lot of good compilations of similar fic in all different themes, you’ll definitely find something you like.
Then read everything by Quiet2885 and Kryss LaBryn, they write almost entirely Leroux compliant. My particular favorites are Gifts and Wrappings and Sherry (this one is a strong M though, read the warnings). Quiet writes a lot of longer fics, but most are modern.
Now you specifically asked for long to moderate length. Not honestly all that many of those but a couple good ones are:
Mingled Tears by bwayphantomrose
Stockholm Syndrome by gravity01
The Scorpion by MlleBree
If you tell me what you like I can dig up some more, I’ve read everything Leroux because I’ve been reading POTO fanfic since 2004, and I used to be such a Leroux snob I wouldn’t even read fics where Christine was brunette. (don’t you judge me, I’m much better now)
What’s your poison @whimsy-patron ?
You like fluff? A Kiss to Make it Better by T0theM00n
You like angst? The Ten Minutes by Artist Forever
You like dark and messed up? Pandora’s Pictures by GuinevereBlak
You like really dark and really messed up? Advances by Elagi (STRONG M, please read the warnings)
You want Christine never having left? Lilacs in the Louis-Phillipe Room by symphonyinA
You want to hear about the two weeks she was captive? Two Weeks of Eternity by NoOneMournstheWicked
You want modern? Ten Months Previoulsy by Broken-Vow
You want M rated but also sweet? A Living Bride by RStiltSkinned
All those authors are great btw, check out everything.
Theres more where all that came from, just let me know!
And if you’ll be so kind as to check out my page :)
OH MY GAWD
It’s the motherlode!
::SOBS HAPPILY::
Thank you! I honestly have no idea on preferences yet, since I’ve mostly read ALW and he’s a different fish.
*scrolling* *scrolling* ….wait….
Oh my god, one of my stories is on here?! O.O As an example of good Leroux-compliance???
This is…all I’ve ever wanted. Reblogging to feast on these fics later.
Okay, sooo, I’m going to shamelessly recommend my own writings. I’m a Leroux-Version lover, so I know (I feel it in my heart, believe me) the struggle to find Leroux-based Fanfiction…
So here’s my account. With the exception of the very first story there, and the one called “Mannequin”, all of them are Leroux-based.
Here’s my multi-chapter Leroux-based E/C story, Wishes of the Heart. It’s still in progress, but I try my best to update as quickly as possible and stay as true to Leroux’s characters as possible:) (NOT horror/Terror)
Summary: Before the whole Angel of Music fiasco started, Mamma Valérius falls ill, and a desperate Christine looks for help in the only friend she has, The Voice in her dressing room. He offers his help, and in exchange, she promises to give him the only thing he has ever wished for: a living wife. Purely Leroux-based. Rating may change.
Here’s a one-shot, taking place at the time in which Christine still thought Erik was an Angel of Music, called The Gidance of an Angel. E/C.
Summary: When Christine Daaé asks her Angel of Music for piano lessons, Erik cannot refuse, even if that means recurring to desperate measures.
Here’s another one-shot. AU. E/C if you want, but since the woman’s name is never mentioned, it doesn’t have to be. It’s called Returning Home.
Summary: With a child on his arms and a wife by his side, Erik returns to see the first woman who ever denied him her love: his own mother.
And the last one, Company. Not E/C. T-rated.
Summary: In the middle of the night, Erik looks for the company of a lady for the first time.
More stories are on their way, so if you liked these ones, please follow, favorite, and review:)!
the mOTHERLOAD
Reblogging for future reference, and to rep a few excellent, darker Leroux-based E/C stories! Warning - no fluff to be found here!
Elcie has written two of my favorites, Bodies on the Shore (T) and The Ordinary Life (M) - the second is shorter but I had to include it.
@sparklyscorpion‘s FFN page is full of gorgeous Leroux-based writing! Her Confessions of a Living Wife (M) is one of the best fics I’ve ever read.
Rebblgged this once but I’ll rebblog this again to add more stuff (nothing mine this time, haha!). Again, all Leroux, different ratings, some unfinished but all of them amazing! None of these are currently (and officially) in hiatus.
Lessons, by CountessofRothes. E/C, strong M, in progress. Very recommended for both the story and the awesome smut.
Deceptive Cadence, by Firdre. Unhealthy E/C set in modern AU. Very recommended, LOVELY Erik. In progress. Author seems to take a liiiiiiiiiittle while to update, I must warn you. If you’re looking for fluffy fluff this is not your story, but it’s also not a strong, extremely toxic relationship. M rated but nothing too explicit.
Madame Valérius is Dead, by the yellow flower. Super, 1000% recommended. Loved it. One of my favs. M rating for believable smut. E/C, ofc. Follows Leroux’s story, but of course, with some twists. It’s awesome and complete.
Matter of Honor, by E.M.K 81. Complete, T-rated. Bittersweet. E/C.
Moonlight Serenade, by magnessina. Short chapters, mkre fluff than anything else. If you want some cute fluffy fluff, this is for you. Complete. Not completely sure, but I think this is ALW Erik. Recommend it nonetheless because, well, E/C fluff!
Cold Ashes by gotta-rite. Complete, dark, messed up E/C. Not fluff. Crazy, crazy Erik. Smut. M-rated. If you’re looking for happy E/C, don’t look for it in this story.
To Those without Pity, by Pointless Nostalgic. Complete. M rated. I remember this fic being Leroux based, but by the summary I guess my mermory was a bit off… oops. Still, it’s great. E/C.
One shots:
Surrender, by dreamdescend. M-rated. Smut. E/C.
While you Were Sleeping, by slow'n'steady. Married life, E/C.
Water Under the Bridge, by Gabriel87. E/C, I guess, though it’s more friendship than anything. Cute with a morbid touch, just as Leroux preescribes;)
All the Tomorrows, by Aisalyn. E/C, five shot. Complete!
I have some more but my internet is too slow right now sooo enjoy these for a while:)
Holy mothership- this is a beautiful post that I’ve been waiting for! Leroux is my favorite version of POTO (I mean, c’mon- it’s the original! My Christine will forever and always be Blonde in my head. Whenever I’m reading a story and they describe Christine as a brunette I just mentally change it to Blonde and keep reading! haha) I’ll try to suggest some that haven’t been listed already.
Some of my personal favorites:
Rosy Hours by wzlwmn (it’s a LOOOOONG one, but it’s good. So good. I literally think about it daily.)
Eko by SymphonyinA (R/C, still updating and I love it)
Joy Departed by Broken-Vow (Three-shot, really good!)
Deceptive Cadence (I won’t post a link since it’s already been mentioned. This story is SHUT THE FRONT DOOR good, and I wait anxiously for the next update.)
The rest of these are one-shots but they are good one-shots! I also suggest looking into the horror category of one-shots (there’s a whole community dedicated to the horror one-shots) as most of them are Leroux and AMAZING!
An Evening’s Amusement by Madrigal
A Formal Burial by redeaths
Changing Faces by EtLaBelle (I LOVE THIS ONE-SHOT. IT’S MY FAVORITE PHANTOM STORY EVER AND IT DESERVES SO MUCH LOVE. It’s a Modern AU, but Leroux based!)
Also, countless others that are on my favorites list on FFN.
ALSO- shameless plug here for my own stories under Not A Ghost3 especially:
Three Wishes (I love this story a lot, I tried to keep it just as Leroux-y as I could!)
Unmasked Realizations (Angst, Angst, Angst told in tiny Vignettes)
Once Upon a Dream (Set a few years after the novel ends and strange to understand, but it has a soft spot in my heart!)
Battle Lights (Modern Christmas AU, but the roots are in Leroux plus it’s my favorite story I’ve ever written!)
Happy Reading, fellow Leroux junkie!
I’ll toss mine on the pile as well :) https://www.fanfiction.net/s/1398247/1/Leroux-Epilogue Enjoy!
vintage bridal fashion: short wedding dresses!
it seems like short wedding dresses had their real heyday in the 1950s-1960s, and to a lesser extent the 1970s.
on the long end of short, you have tea-length dresses (an incredibly flattering and underrated length, imo) very popular in the 1950s.
on the short end, mini dresses of the 1960s, 70s, and everything in between those lengths. below are some favorite examples.
1955. the full photos do this dress justice, very pretty and sparkly.
1959. short dresses are often paired with short veils, to great success (another great thing is that they don’t hide the shoes!)
1960. the dress is amazing obviously, but she also has a very cute pixie haircut. short everything.
1962. i go nuts for t-shirt style sleeves and necklines on a dress. and her flower headpiece is adorable. also gloves.
1962. i love this simple wedding look with all my heart. the sparkly veil added a touch of magic for the ceremony and i love that she’s wearing her glasses afterwards :’)
1966. the rare but beloved coat wedding dress!
1968. love this water lily/lotus headpiece. and the hairdo!
1969. a color choice! I’m weak for baby blue and brown so this one has me by the throat.
1970. adorable babydoll dress. ribbon in her hair and everything.
some words that come to mind with these looks are sweet, simple, chic, playful, easy, relaxed, fun, and i think that’s part of the appeal of short dresses for many brides (it’s why i like them so much anyways)
Is Gina Beck's Christine more e/c leaning or e/r?
I think you meant R/C in the last part? Though I would be totally down for a Christine who's rooting for the Phantom and Raoul to get together during the show.
Anyway, Gina Beck is interesting because while her interviews suggest that her Christine does not feel much romantic love for the Phantom by the end, her acting is very sympathetic towards him. For example, in this BroadwayWorld interview, it says:
The fans of the show tend to want her to end up with the Phantom...
Yes, and when she kisses him, all these different feelings come up making her question what she wants. The moment she gives the ring back is very hard, especially the way Ramin plays the Phantom, but ultimately she realises that her place is not with him.
And in this Access London interview:
AL: During the final lair scene, the audience sees a much more vulnerable side to The Phantom. How would you describe Christine's character and emotions in that scene?
GB: Well Christine actually comes into her own in this scene, she is scared but she doesn't crumble, she gets angry with the Phantom rather than cowering and then realises what it is that might make him see reason and gives herself to him. After he frees Raoul she has nothing but pity for him and his plight.
But with her acting, she often seems very into the Phantom. We have 'Music of the Night' where she gives a little pleasure-squeeze of her stomach when he sings (the Phantom has "awakened" something in her at that moment... and she likes it):
There's also her, ahem, "orgasm face" at some moments:
Now those are moments from before she's realized who the Phantom is, but what about after? Well, I've talked about this moment in 'All I Ask of You', where she kisses Raoul but jerks back when she touches the side of his face. Contrast it with how she reacts when she kisses the Phantom and touches the same side:
Anyway, I'm just saying there's a reason why fans were theorizing that Gina Beck's Christine, during her AIAOY kiss, was secretly imagining she was kissing the Phantom and broke off the kiss when she realized she could not feel the deformity.
And of course, we have her reaction when returning the ring:
Which is why even though her interviews suggest otherwise, I tend to characterize Gina Beck's Christine as more E/C-leaning. Heck, maybe Gina Beck is literally embodying Christine - her head says Raoul, her emotions say the Phantom. Whatever it is, she's a fun Christine to watch!
In her Insta stories Holly Anne Hull was asking people for advice on good skin cause she says she always has breakouts. After she got a bunch of responses she said a lot of people told her to get pregnant cause they stopped getting acne after that 👀
Of course it got me thinking about another performer who is also young enough to get constant breakouts and who gets self conscious about her looks and who gets told that all the “married women” have clear skin and who maaaaaaybe has a teacher that is *very eager* to help 👀👀👀
idk 😌 I love you 😌

what do you think makes a leroux-style christine?
To be there's a fair deal of nervousness, high nerves, a restless feeling. In the novel Christine has some rants and at one point even threatens to kill herself just to get her point across. She is described as very kind and sweet-natured, especially towards youngsters and more unfortunate souls, but also mysterious and headstrong. This duality is interesting.
Christines I've seen reflecting some of this includes Anna O'Byrne (in West End), Isabel Schwartzbach (Copenhagen) and Lauri Brons (Hamburg). Michelle van de Ven (Hamburg) and Meredith Braun (West End) could also be mentioned.
a christine!
a christine!
Why did it take me this long to realise that Erik making the mannequin of Christine is him physically objectifying her???
Random little study tips from a very stressed student that should be studying rn
Figure out what study cicle works for you, some people can study 120min/10min break, others might do 40/5 or 60/10. See how long you can concentrate without needing a break, and how long you need your breaks to be. Remeber EVERYONE works diffrent, eficiency doesn't always look the same.
Note taking, *sigh*, it's a complicated subject, to sum it up, do whatever works for you, don't try to force a certain method, if you do you'll just make revising harder
DRINK A LOT OF WATER shouldn't need to explain this... right??
get a comfy chair for the love of god, i swear even with a comfy one i get bad backaches since i have to spend 15 hours on my desk
Make a list of resources that are useful FOR YOU
Make a bunch of study playlists for every mood
Romaticise the hell out of studying, otherwise life as a student will be very bleak lol
ORGANIXATION ORGANIZATION ORGANIZATION i swear it makes 100% the diffrence, it can be on an app on your phone or a bullet journal, or notion (my fav) just find the one that works for you and use it RELIGEOUSLY
