Shortly after arriving in Lagos, my guide showed me a story that was being passed around Nigerian social media. Ā There was a woman whoād been stopped in traffic behind a crowded prison truck, and she witnessed a food vendor running alongside, shoving his food between the bars of the window, into the hands of the prisoners inside. By the time he was finished, heād given away all his food. Ā The man was himself in desperate circumstances. Ā He was sleeping outdoors. Ā But despite having hardly anything to give, he gave away all his merchandise. Ā Amazingly, my guide Kola was able to locate the man. Ā His name is Ibere Ugochukwu. Ā And this is his story: Ā Ā
āA few years ago I worked as an apprentice in a cosmetics shop. Ā I was supposed to receive a payment at the end of my term. Ā But I was warned by the other employees that the owner would find a reason not to pay me. Ā Heād always invent reasons to fire his boys right before their payment. Ā So I made the decision to quit. Ā But when I told him, he dragged me to the police. Ā He told them lies about me. Ā He told them Iād stolen so much money. Ā And they tortured me. Ā They tied my hands and legs and they hung me from the ceiling. Ā They beat me. Ā I went deaf from all the slaps. Ā For ten days I was given no food. Ā My fellow prisoners would share little bits of their meals when they were finished. Ā But some days I saw nothing. Ā Honestly I was about to die. Ā And I started to pray to God. Ā And on the tenth day, the guards decided that it would cause too much trouble to let me die. Ā They told my employer: āAfter what we did to him, he must be innocent. Ā Because heād have confessed if he was guilty.ā Ā They released me into the world like a madman. Ā And Iāve carried the memory ever since. Ā I promised myself that if I ever found someone in a similar situation, I would help. Ā So when I learned that prisoners pass down this road, I chose to hawk in this location. Ā I waited until I finally saw the truck, and I pushed all my food through the bars. Ā My fellow vendors couldnāt believe it. Ā They asked me who would pay me for the food. Ā I told them: āI didnāt do it for any man. Ā I did it because of what God did for me.āā Ā (Lagos, Nigeria)

What secret will you take to your grave?
In Dutch, when you boil an egg and then place it into cold water to make it easier to peel an egg, itās called āto scareā the eggs.
One day when I was about 6 or 7, my mom asked me to āscareā the eggs. So, little joker I was, lifted the lid of the pan and yelled āBOOO!ā
My mom cracked up and has been telling this story ever since, for over 20 years. Sheās come to love the story and still truly thinks that I wanted to really āscareā the eggs. Truth is I knew what āscaring an eggā meant and only wanted to make her laugh because she was in a sad place and time back then.
Itās made her laugh for over 20 fucking years, that means itās the best joke Iāve ever pulled off and Iād die before Iād let her find out I was just kidding.

i do feel bad for the writers on bojack and rick and morty because they know they have shitty male fans that idolize and identify with their mains, so theyāve both now made explicit episodes that are likeĀ āstop idolizing them. theyāre not the hero they suck.ā and every fan has just been likeĀ āno i got it. theyāre the antihero which is even cooLERā

To explain just a hair more, if a landlord can use someoneās rent to buy a new property, and use tenants in a new property to buy yet more property, it means every person who pays rent could have also eventually bought a property outright and not had to have such a constant drain. But, no renter could: for lack of upfront funds, for a lack of access due to racism or ableism or classism, for lack of trust given by financial institutions, etc. Put plainly, a landlord contributes no value or service but uses someone elseās funds to compound a landlordās own riches and get more human livestock to bleed, simply because of a moment of permission granted by more powerful groups. How many people are suffering and struggling to keep an ex-nurse afloat in luxury? What is being contributed?
