She listened, and smiled. “Oh, yay! That’s better than spending valentine’s day alone. Well… what’s something you both like? Like a movie or a dinner you could make, and you could just hang out at home and snuggle or whatever it is you like to do? You could also make him a gift. Like a little scrapbook of photos of you two, or write a poem or something? Sometimes the best gifts aren’t the biggest. And if he knows you, I bet he’s not going to surprise you too much.”

“Yes, it should be nice. I really do think I’m just overthinking it a little. I mean it still stresses me out.. but I think the overthinking is stressing me out a little more.” Bethany bit down on her bottom lip as she looked to the ground, pausing for a moment. Of course a gift wasn’t the problem, it was just the feeling of keeping Sully from going out and doing something. “I think the plan will be to stay in. I’m also a huge fan of homemade gifts. I paint so paintings have been gifts in the past, and sketches are always my go to gifts. What about you? Is there anyone special?”

“I’ve actually drank a considerable amount,” Valerie slurred, swaying a bit, but not falling over her feet just yet. “I feel bad for you. It’s gonna be pr-etty hard to catch up. I got an iron liver. But you should join me. We should dance, get tattoos, let me kick your ass at Mario Kart…”

“Oh, goodness..” Bethany shook her head slowly as Valerie went on, but she brought her own drink to her lips for a sip. “It’s alright, I think I’ll be caught up just fine, don’t worry about that..” Of course there was no way the brunette would be hammered tonight, not with Valerie like this. She wanted to be sure she was there for her. “But I’m all for any of those. Maybe except the tattoo part, I’m not sure that’s something I’d be up for..”

At the look of her smile, Sullivan smiled, even more, his gaze softening and warming up even more. “Do we have eggs,” he said as he stood up in thought, moving towards the kitchen to open the fridge. “Unless Mike made the biggest omelet then maybe we don’t. But I doubt it. I always buy extra eggs because I love them sunny side in the morning,” he said with a chuckle, eyeing a full carton inside the fridge. “Ah, yes we do have eggs. Alright, how do you like your eggs? There’s some coffee left in the bag, if you can make some?” asked James as he closed the fridge, moving to the stove.

For a moment Bethany watched as Sully got up and moved to the kitchen. She stayed there still half wrapped in the blanket on the couch before finally pulling herself up, stretching once her feet were flat on the floor. “Oh good.” she replied at the sound of the confirmation on the eggs. “Yes I can make some coffee. And I like mine over easy if you’ve got some bread to toast but if not then scrambled is just fine.” Bethany moved over into the kitchen, filling the tea kettle with some water and once that was going on the stove she prepared the french press with the coffee grounds and reached for two mugs. “So, I have to say I’m interested to hear how your night in the grocery store went. That’s the kind of stuff you see in the movies when the world ends, I didn’t actually think it happens in real life.”

“I don’t know if I’d say it changes someone’s outlook by knowing,” Brit shrugged her shoulders. “Your behaviors because of your star sign are your behaviors because of your star sign. Knowing makes no difference. But, it does make you understand a bit more, and grasp things better. And maybe there’s an aspect of you that you didn’t realize you should slash could work on.”

“Well, at least it makes it better to know there’s a science behind the behavior and what not.” Bethany shrugged. “I’m not too informed on all of that, I’ve just read horoscopes and what not in passing. Sometimes I do find it rather weird how accurate it can be. Though I always chalk it up to coincidence. But sometimes it does help connect dots.”

“Well exactly,” Tom said with a firm nod. “And plus, this is New York City! There are some right lunatics here. And, did you watch You? Fuck knows who’s out there.”

“Oh no,” Bethany shook her head. “I can’t watch it, no not while I’m still living alone. Perhaps if I had someone else but goodness that show isn’t for me. And you know some creep is watching it too and becoming inspired because of how easy it made it seem. Nope, curtains and locked doors are high on my priority list.”

“Not totally, no,” Art shrugged. He didn’t have anything against the holiday, or at least against the idea of the holiday. The origin story was definitely a whole different vibe, but people celebrating love and friendship and their precious relationships was great without all the crazy implications it had grown to carry over the years. “I like the cards, y’know? Like, I miss making Valentines in school and giving all of your friends candy necklaces, and making a big special handmade one for the person you really like and everything. I wish we’d just go back to that. Not pack every spa and restaurant and buy out like a billion roses and everything. There’s a lot of pressure to be worth doing all that for nowadays. When we were kids, it was just a time to thank everybody for being alive.”

Bethany smiled. That was something that seemed to be long forgotten once one reached adulthood. Valentine’s Day was quite the big deal growing up, she remembered picking out cards for everyone at school, arguing with her mom over which ones would be best, and then giving and getting candy and all of the crafts she’d bring home for her parents over the years. Thinking of that did seem to make things seem much simpler. Lord knows it was much better for Bethany to recall on those times than get herself all worked up over the stress of now. “I can’t tell you how much thinking of that, now that you mentioned it, is much better than the stress associated with the holiday now. It would be much easier if the crowds and fancy restaurants weren’t so heavily involved.”

Randall looked up from his phone and the florist website he had been looking at.  “Kind of?  Well depending upon what you mean on splurging.  I mean I’m just getting flowers or like chocolates, maybe ask him out to dinner.  It is cliche and very commercialized but it’s nice excuse you know.  He doesn’t have to ask why I bought flowers or anything.  But if it’s not a big deal for you or Sullivan you don’t have to do anything.”

“See.. that’s the thing. I’m not sure if it’s a big deal for Sully. And I know it probably sounds ridiculous that I don’t know this about my own boyfriend, and we should talk about it I guess. I just don’t want him to feel like I’m holding him back. Sully’s a big gesture kinda guy, yeah? And well, those don’t always work out so well for me..” Bethany sighed. Now she just felt stupid for ranting.

Olivia folded her hands, thinking on it. “No, I don’t really think it is. But I do like all the discount candy the day after. I think as long as you’re with someone you love and are doing something nice together, even if that’s just sitting at home and watching television, that’s all that should really matter.” She tilted her head a bit, “Do you have someone you’ve got to get stuff for?” she must, or she wouldn’t be so worried. Right? Unless she was the type that felt she must get something little for each and every coworker. 

“The discount candy is definitely a nice perk.” Bethany smiled. And nodded as she went on about just being with who you love. Bethany understood that much of it and of course knew she could do that. But she just couldn’t help but feel that she was holding Sully back. He was certainly a big gesture kind of guy and sometimes Bethany wondered if her diagnosis held him back. She just felt guilty. “I do have someone, my boyfriend. And I’m so last minute with gifts, and I hate the crowds. I’m also not the best person to surprise.”

“See! I knew you could make it. I promise book club is more fun than it sounds. If you hate it I won’t pressure you to come back.”

Bethany needed to try something else, get herself out more doing things that were good for her and she kind of hated the gym so reading was the next best thing. “Okay, okay.” she nodded as Annette greeted her. “I promise I’ll be honest. I also promise I’m trying to come in here with an open mind so I swear no negativity aloud from me today..”

Molly looked up from her drink. Too invested in how amazing the pina colada was too pull away, but still giving her attention to Boo.  “I understand what you’re saying. Sometimes it all seems too much of a marketing attack. They set bars and expectations in movies and commercials that you have to go all out, and one certain day. If it’s stressing you out though, you can do something from the heart? Cooking a meal from the heart, and a movie night in with a pillow fort or something?” She offered with a small smile. 

“A pillow fort..” Bethany repeated with a smile across her lips. “I won’t lie, that really does sound like a lot of fun. A pillow fort and a movie and a dinner at home.” Bethany couldn’t quite imagine Sully climbing into a pillow fort but it might be something fun to look into. And thinking of that was certainly the opposite of stressful. “I like the sound of that much better than going out. I’m just afraid Sully would want to go out. I just.. I’m not sure I could handle it on such a busy night but I also hate to think I’m keeping him form going out and doing things.”

“Good, good. I’m glad you were okay. I’m so much relieved to know you were here than alone at your place, even if I wasn’t here with you,” said Sullivan as he pulled back to see Bethany’s face, his hand gently moving to rest against her cheek. Even if he had had a crappy night, trapped inside a grocery store, it was all definitely a detail now that he knew Boo had been alright. That had been his real worry the whole time. “Are you hungry? Did you eat? I know we had some things were before the storm unless Mike used them all. But I can make us a quick breakfast. Or at least a good cup of coffee,” he offered, a soft smile forming on his lips as his thumb gently caressed her cheek.

Bethany couldn’t help but wonder how it was being trapped in a grocery store. Of course she had seen the movies with the storms and the apocalypse and people venturing out to the store or getting stuck and it was a mad house. So she was so interested to hear about it. The brunette smiled at the mention of food. She hadn’t eaten since the night before so she was hungry and could probably go for some coffee too. “I could definitely go for some food right now, do you have eggs?” she asked, “And coffee too.”

“I mean,” Jacy sighed. “Personally I’m a massive sucker for it. It’s nice seeing everyone take a break from whatever they’re doing to make sure they actively show their partner that they love them. I love it.” He explained with a brief hand wave. “But some people don’t opt into it and that’s fine. I’m sure your partner wouldn’t expect you to do something you didn’t want to.”

Of course the whole thing was a bit stressful to Bethany but she could appreciate someone buying into it. And at least he seemed to be into it for the right reason, a good intention. “Well, that’s true, and I guess some people get caught up in life and can forget to make time so it’s nice to have an excuse for it.” She hoped she was making sense. She gave a sigh. “No, I don’t think Sully is expecting much from me with it, at least I don’t think so. He was nervous about surprising me too much on my birthday, so any big spectacle from me would be from out of nowhere honestly..”

“Honestly, do you think it’s worth it?” Bethany asked, looking across the table at the other person. “I mean splurging for Valentine’s Day and what not? Of course I’m sure it’s special for some people but honestly if you ask me it’s too much. There are too many people out and about so the last place I want to be is a busy restaurant, and why do we need a commercialized holiday to tell someone we love them? I mean the cards are cute, I guess but it’s just all.. so much. Sorry, I hate to sound like a debbie downer, I’ve just always been a bit.. stressed out by the whole thing.”

“It’s Aquarius season, actually. At least, that’s the tropical zodiac,” Britney didn’t like to interrupt people but after hearing a nearby stranger get it all wrong, she had to jump in. Especially seeing as it was about star signs. “If you’re thinking about sidereal zodiac, it’s actually Capricorn season.”

Truly Bethany didn’t know the difference when it came to astrological seasons and what not. It was so confusing. All she knew were the signs and had an idea of the months when they were ‘active’ or whatever a person would call them. And now she was embarrassed. “Oh, Aquarius season, right..” she repeated, glancing down. “I guess I hadn’t realized it had changed with the new month. Uhm, yeah, I’m not really up to date on the whole star sign business, though I think it’s fascinating how things shift and how knowing more can change a person’s outlook..”

Sullivan frowned a bit the second she mentioned an episode. The sight of that already making him feel guilty, the image of Bethany freaking out because she had come to look for him and he wasn’t there, let alone that she couldn’t reach him through the whole night, made Sullivan let out a sigh. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry, baby,” he said as he just hugged her tighter. At least Mike had stepped up and helped her through it, let alone, she hadn’t been all by herself during the storm, which was relieving. “I was grabbing supplies for us. I went to the grocery store after I left work and I was planning to pick you up after I had all we needed but the storm got here before I could make it out and I had to stay there the whole night.”

“It’s alright, Sully, truly.” Bethany hugged her boyfriend back tighter in return, though, pulling herself closer to him, as close as she could get. “I was alright, I mean I was just worried, I didn’t have any..” She trailed off. It was true, other than being worried sick Bethany had fared fairly well throughout the storm, honestly. Mike hadn’t been the worst company and having Archie did help tremendously. She blinked a few times, pulling back a bit and listening to him explain where he had been. “Truly I’m just glad you’re alright, that you’re safe and here now. I was scared but I was far better off here at your place than at mine.”

“Is there a word for like — Being scared of people looking in through your curtains? Because if curtains aren’t closed properly and there’s a little gap, I get really anxious and stressed, because what if someone looks in? I physically can’t handle curtains not being shut properly. If there’s any window bit not covered, I have to fix it. If there’s a word for it, that’s me. I have that.”

For a brief moment Bethany wondered if it had in fact been herself speaking about the issue with the curtains as opposed to being spoken to about them because in every sense, she could relate. “Well, if you do think of or find a word for it, I’d also like to know because truly I understand what you mean. I can’t walk past an open or uncovered window after dark or if the window is facing a busy street. I’ve never understood anyone who can stand to let the world see every bit of their life on display.”

Finally able to open the door, Sullivan walked into his apartment. It was little to say he looked like trash, after spending a night inside a grocery store, trapped among so many other people on there, and worried sick through the whole night. He had worse than those, absolutely, but that didn’t mean he was eager to have more nights like those. The second he walked in, Sullivan noticed a figure on the couch, walking closer after he closed the door, only to have his eyes widening once he recognized Bethany. “Oh thank god,” he said as he moved quickly to her side, bringing her closer to him as he hugged his girlfriend tight. “I was so worried. I couldn’t call you when the storm got worse. I was trapped al night in a grocery store but you’re okay,” he said with a sigh as he pressed a kiss to her forehead before he pulled away to look at Bethany. “Did you spend the night here?“

To say Bethany was groggy would be an understatement. She was in and out of sleep all night and truthfully the only thing that brought her comfort was Archie’s presence, the little dog kept by her side all night. So when she heard the door open and the sound of Sully’s voice getting closer honestly she thought she was dreaming. It wasn’t until she felt his warmth and his arms around her that she realized it was indeed him, home from being stuck god only knows where. She felt so bad. She was sleepy, but she did manage to bring herself up and wrap her arms around him in return. “Yeah,” she nodded, “I was here. I came here before the power went down and was hoping you’d be here. I had a moment but Mike helped, at least calm me a bit, and Archie. Sully I was so worried how on earth did you end up trapped in a grocery store?”
