hi i happened to spot a reply on someone else's post where you implied that you were struggling and i just wanted to wish you well and say that there are so many different pathways to happiness and finding the life that suits you best. your journey is just beginning and there is no right or wrong way to tell your story. do what feels good, have love for yourself even when it's hard, don't linger on regrets or could ofs - there is only ever tomorrow. i have no clue if you're still questioning stuff so sorry if you're not, i just wanted to send some warm thoughts your way. no need to respond :)

So my brand of autism comes with the "takes things literally" dlc but not in the way that I believe people when they say outlandish things but in the way that I believed my mother when she told me I can't draw at age 5 and then again when she told me I'm not an artist when I tried to apply for an art academy so I gave up on drawing around middle school because I took it literally that I am NOT an artist and cannot be. Same for when she told me I can't ever go to college, my child brain just accepted that as fact.

I took it literally when I worked in a factory and they had set goals for us and I worked myself to permanent injury, not understanding the unspoken rule of "take it slow and don't worry about hitting the goal" because the managers knew they could take advantage of me and I'd do what they told me to do and all the other employees disliked me because I tried too hard and that could make the goals higher for everyone but nobody communicated this to me

I think one of the biggest issues with autism evaluations is that they don't explain these things to people being evaluated. Taking things literally doesn't mean I don't understand sarcasm or jokes. It means I am easy to manipulate and take advantage of.

Also the general public's perception of what this means is an issue too. I'm starting to think we all, or most, understand sarcasm perfectly well. It's the other forms of 'social insincerity' that we struggle with. Framing it as "not getting sarcasm" I think has done very deep damage.

I heard an interview, can’t remember the psychologist, but he was explaining this idea and encouraging people to stop and take a deep breath and literally drink in small moments like you’re a dryass plant when something is ever satisfactory, positive, mildly successful, randomly joyful so your brain can code and integrate that experience because our natural lizard brain will quickly tape over it with mostly unnecessary negative survival shit. Sounds dumb and dorky but sometimes I remember this when I’m feeling good about a moment because our cave brains are still catching up with modern life without sabertooths. I like that it’s not just a pollyanna gosh just be more positive thing but more of a legit brain wiring phenomenon can be gradually hacked through small behavioral changes.

Another super important one: Take the time to tell yourself, when something you did or bought or decided works out “That was a good decision and I’m glad I made it! Go me!”

Seriously, it can have a huge impact. suddenly you go from remembering nothing but bad decisions to adding in a series of Excellent Choices You Feel Good About, and it makes things so much better.
