Reading the comments on Netflix’s social media pages is hell. It’s absurd how many people miss that the real issue isn’t whether Mike could realistically reciprocate Will’s feelings, but rather the quality of the writing itself. The story clearly exploits and romanticizes Will’s pain. For at least a couple of seasons, it emphasizes his romantic longing and encourages the audience to invest in it. Yet, all that suffering and tension are ultimately dismissed and never properly acknowledged or respected. While Will’s pain remains unresolved, the heterosexual couple is given a serious, tragic moment framed as meaningful, despite being rooted in avoidance and misunderstanding.

So this isn’t a question of realism; rather, it is about writing that appropriates queer pain to enrich the narrative but ultimately discards it without any payoff. I wish it received better acknowledgment in mainstream media.

they are so clearly trying to get around calling him the heart now that byler is off the table. it just makes it obvious that they were doing it on purpose before s5. losers. baiters. etc

even if you don’t want to say heart. you can say paladin. you can say dungeon master even. he is still those things. outside of byler. but you’re telling me dnd is too related literally and metaphorically to his relationship with will to say any of that?

like. storyteller is not a thing in dnd. (or at least it wasn’t then and even now it doesn’t mean that.) they are having to minimize mike’s love of dnd (you know. the thing he is clinging to supposedly mostly because of his GIRLFRIEND DYING.) to give him a name that isn’t associated with HIS GAY BEST FRIEND.

duffers writing the tower scene as some kind of brutal shut down for bylers is so funny because their love literally shined through anyways. we ended up with a heavily queercoded mike who stumbled over his words and knew what "coming out" meant, will looking the most in love he's ever been, an indirect kiss through the water bottle sharing, and overall great chemistry that couldn't be matched even when mike's gf was dying.
