I like to think that different areas of Battery City have sort of different eras/influences
Like the housing units are very 1950’s suburban picket fence America
The heart of the city/Better Living Industries headquarters are a lot closer to what we see in the comics. Big white skyscrapers and large plain hallways.
The Lobby is a stark contrast to the rest of the city, with a lot of neon lights and Japanese influences.
I can imagine most of the housing outside the city is like, suburban gated tract-home communities. The kind where every house is exactly alike and you have to walk sideways to squeeze between them, if they’re separated at all. Where every road in the place is something like “E. 281st Street”, but there’s also “E. 281st Lane”, “E. 281st Road”, and “E. 281st Way”; with North, South, West, NE, SE, NW and SW varieties of each; and none of them run even momentarily in a straight line.
The houses themselves are not only made of the cheapest possible materials, they’re shrunk down to the smallest possible dimensions, also. Driveway just big enough for a single car, no garages. Front lawn is a patch of turf the size of a double bed. All appliances, including clothes-washing machines, in the postage-stamp sized kitchen. High-fenced back yard/patio just big enough for couple of lawn chairs, a frosted-glass-topped table and a gas grill.
Now, if you live/have lived in places like this, and were content with it, awesome! The reason I think places like this give off BL/ind vibes isn’t the housed as much as the neighborhoods. They’re just so eerie to me! When I’m in one it feels like everything outside of it ceases to exist. They’re unnaturally quiet, like they’re vacuum-sealed off from the rest of the world. The longest unobstructed sight-line anywhere in them is less than fifty yards unless you look up. I usually have a really good sense of direction, but drive me through a place like this (at it’s 20mph top speed limit) and my internal compass goes haywire.
They just seem like places that are unstuck from linear reality.
a drawing that cost me my soul inspired by this post and this one because i bawled my eyes out
