The poetic cinema behind her sex scenes with tamlin vs. rhysand were like 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽 because never once in her moments w tamlin do you see her take control, it’s always him touching her, him getting her off, but then with Rhysand he almost immediately puts her in control, lets her do whatever she wants to him, and it’s just like.... I need to lie down.

The fact that so many of the scenes mirrored the first book/first half of the second book were so fucking cool and shows how different the stories are. Like the lake of starlight (vast and drowning) vs. the scene with the star spirits (beautiful and unexpected)??? Or the way Tamlin forced her to be his spy vs. Rhysand letting her go so she could be the spy of her own volition. Rhysand helping her strengthen and control her powers by having her use them on him vs. Tamlin refusing to talk about it and then his outburst literally causing her to use her powers to shield herself. Tamlin not telling her ANYTHING to “protect her” (read: she wasn’t useful for him outside her body anymore) vs. Rhysand keeping the mate secret from her because he believed in her right to choose who she spent her life with even if it killed him inside I... I could go on.

I have video proof of me literally crying and freaking out over the part where tamlin and lucien walked out and to say I was shaking is an understatement. Oh my god what a ride that scene was.

The way Rhysand keeps his arm around her not in a possessive way like Tamlin does but in a protective “I know you can handle your shit but I’m not letting you go” type way... my face is hot

It seems very strange to me that people should discount Ovid's take on Medusa merely because it's different from the source material. Is that not a modern concept as well? Whomst the fuck says that Ovid should be shunned for having a more forward thinking take on the myth? In my opinion, Ovid was actually fairly --i said it before, yes--modern in his concept. The entire idea of seeing rape as a bad thing and giving a measure of autonomy to such a hated figure has always struck me as admirable.

Quite. The idea of myth as having an ‘original’ source is just absolute pants anyway, for myriad reasons.

Firstly, myth is inherently an oral tradition - even now, when I retell myth, it’s usually in person - and so there are hundreds of versions before the first version that was committed to paper. The extant writings that we have are the culminations of centuries of muddied mythic waters; they are not pure, untainted originals. Claiming Homer and Hesiod as the originators of the Greek myths, as many people do, is just fallacious.

Secondly, myth by its very definition is fluid.

(A small caveat here that it’s quite difficult to posit a rigid definition for what exactly myth is; some people define it as any religious narrative, others as any ancient story, but I would probably define it as any narrative which has socio-cultural significance, often tying in with a belief system or ritual function. To me, that’s the definition that fits best as it’s both broad enough to encompass different ways of constructing narratives without being too vast and therefore reductive.)

Myth has always changed and been changed. We have myriad versions of myth used by Plato, e.g. Protagoras, where he reworks the myth of Prometheus. Euripides, Sophocles and Aeschylus all change the Electra myth in Electra (Eur.), Electra (Soph.) and Choephoroi (Aesch.) respectively to make different narrative points and draw focus to different themes and events. If myth reworking was good enough for the Greeks, then we can’t really get angry with later civilisations for doing the same.

And a third point, more directly related to what you’re actually saying, I don’t put any stock whatsoever in the notion that Medusa’s rape makes it an antifeminist myth. Obviously it’s a terrible thing to happen within the narrative context, but Ovid quite clearly portrays it as being so; he doesn’t say that it was justified or that Medusa deserves it. Is it a feminist myth as Ovid intended? Of course not. Can we use it in feminist contexts today? We sure can. We have no idea why Ovid reworked the myth the way that he did, although there are several theories. I don’t personally believe he much cared about Medusa’s empowerment or making a point about victim blaming, but I do think that it’s more nuanced than ‘Ovid wanted to make the Greeks look bad’ (which is the argument someone made to me yesterday… no).

I also don’t believe that characters who have their agency removed, e.g. Persephone, should be viewed as inherently powerless. Persephone became the queen of the Underworld, for goodness’ sake. I believe that we restore a measure of power to these figures when we acknowledge that their agency was compromised and we talk about what this means. As a sexual abuse survivor myself, I don’t put any stock whatsoever in the argument that it’s empowering to say that Persephone was never raped, for example, and that her descent into the Underworld was her own choice. I find it more empowering to say that yes, she was violated and had her choices taken away from her, but she kept on living and found her own sense of self and some measure of peace in the aftermath.

That’s only my own personal view, and I’m aware that others think differently - to go back to my first point, that’s really the beauty of myth. We all get to have our own favourite interpretations. Even Ovid.

Here’s how the Walt Disney Company wants to treat its employees.

My source is a Facebook post that’s being circulated by representatives from the Cast Members’ Union.

On May 1, 2018 – for the first time since September 2017 – the Company entered the room to negotiate with the Union. They’ve put two options on the table.

Option 1: the exact same offer that 93% of voting Cast Members rejected back in December 2017.

Each Cast Member would receive the thousand dollar tax cut bonus that the Company already promised them, but only if they settle an unsustainably low raise (fifty cents per hour).

Option 2: the Cast Members will receive a more sustainable raise, but at the cost of renegotiating a bunch of really important Union rights.

This option is spelled out in a thirty-eight page proposal. It has a few ups, but a lot more downs.

• By 2021, the lowliest Cast Members would be paid fifteen dollars an hour. Higher-paid Cast Members would either get a seventy-five cent raise or a three percent raise, whichever is higher.

• All Cast Members would finally receive the bonus that the Company promised them.

• In the event of a massive closure – like during a hurricane – the Company would pay Cast Members for up to five days of missed shifts. (Currently, the Company isn’t contractually obligated to pay them anything.)

THAT SAID

• The Company would no longer have to pay overtime rates to Cast Members who are scheduled for fewer than five days a week. Tough luck, part-timers!

• The Company would get rid of sixth-day overtime and seventh-day doubletime altogether. So if you work for that brutal and exhausting amount of time, you would be rewarded with regular pay.

• The Company would stop the Union from having a say in how Cast Members are scheduled altogether.

• The Company would change transfer guidelines. A Cast Member would have to wait a full year before transfering to a new location. (Currently it’s six months.)

• The Company would only allow Cast Members to transfer to a new location if they have two attendance entries and no reprimands. (Currently it’s five attendance entries and one reprimand.)

• The Company would be allowed to transfer Union Shop Stewards to other locations upon whim. The Shop Steward wouldn’t have a say in the matter.

• The Company would no longer have to reimburse a Cast Member who takes a leave of absence due to civil or criminal charges, even if the Cast Member is found Not Guilty. (It shouldn’t matter either way, but still.)

• The Company would no longer be required to have a Shop Steward present when Management calls a Cast Member in for disciplinary reasons.

• Currently, Cast Members can clock in fifteen minutes before their shift starts and clock out fifteen minutes after it ends. The Company would reduce that to five minutes, before and after.

• If a Cast Member has a grievance that can’t be resolved by an Area Manager or a General Manager, the Company would no longer have to send a higher-ranking representative to resolve it. The grievance would just go unresolved.

• The Company would only provide Holiday Pay to Cast Members who have worked the day before the holiday, the day of the holiday, AND the day after the holiday.

• The Company would place a cap on the number of hours of Vacation Time and Sick Time that a Cast Member can accrue. (Currently it’s based on the number of hours that the Cast Member works, but the Company wants to base it on the number of hours paid up to 1,800 hours.)

• The Company would no longer be required to have a Shop Steward present for Scheduling Bids and Vacation Bids.

• The Safety Committee is a forum where Cast Members can voice safety concerns in their work area to Management. The Labor/Management Committee is a forum where Shop Stewards can voice their concerns to Management.

The Company would combine these two Committees, and diminish the Union’s representation in them.

• The Company would now be allowed to subject Cast Members to random drug testing at any time, for any drug, without even notifying the Union first.

• The Company would no longer allow Cast Members to speak one-on-one with Union Representatives while on the clock. Not backstage. Not during a break. Nothing.

• The Company would no longer allow the Union to contact Cast Members directly at all. They’d have to do it via mail or solicitation letters.

• The Company would no longer allow the Union to contact Non-Union Cast Members at all.

• The Company would allows Cast Members to join the Union without paying monthly dues. This would de-fund the Union, which would basically kill it altogether.

• The Company wouldn’t be required to negotiate another contract with its Cast Members until 2022 (assuming the Cast Members still have a Union to advocate on their behalf).

TL;DR?

CAST MEMBERS: We want to be paid fifteen dollars an hour (which wasn’t even a living wage back in 2015), and we want the bonus you promised us.

It’s literally more iconic than any marvel movie

Y’all know that there is heavy symbolism in that scene to show that Mulan is the spirit of the Great Stone Dragon and that’s why Mushu wasn’t able to awaken it?

Mulan sits in the rain underneath the statue of the Great Stone Dragon (who is looking down on her), and suddenly decides on a course of action. She looks up, resolved to go to war in place of her father and runs into the temple where she lights the match and beseeches protection for her family. The stone she bows to and that we see lit up by lightening strike is that of the dragon, whose eyes are looking out after her, lit from underneath by the candles. The scene transitions to the divider in the house that also has an icon of the dragon. where she replaces her hair comb with the summons. Then we see the sword hilt, also the dragon, and as she draws the blade we see her face replace it. She ties up her hair, then as she opens the wardrobe, the handles are also the dragon. After donning the armor, the view shows her facing us, with the hilt of the sword (the face of the dragon) in front of her face, where she then turns the sword to reveal her face, and sheaths it. As she leaves, we flash back to the temple, and the eyes of the dragon flash as her grandmother wakes up.

The Great Stone Dragon resides within her. She is the protector of the family.

After this explanation, the scene where Mushu cannot wake up the stone dragon makes so much more sense. I appreciate the symbolism so much more. I noticed the dragon but didn’t notice she was constantly juxtaposed with the dragon!
