         “  you know  ,   i don’t think i ever listened to them  .   though kass always tells me dad loved her  .  ”    she doesn’t know much about her dad  ,   though  .   everything is told to her via her sister or mom  .     “  he’s cute  ,   though !  ”    this is how people made small talk  ,   right? 

 “never?” she echoes back, clearly shocked. “well val we are sorting that out right now this moment,” she nodded authoritatively, grabbing her phone where spotify is already open playing something acoustic quietly in the background. she clicks through a couple of pages, hitching up the volume, and then the opening bars of ‘everywhere’ are playing. “it is like the BEST roadtrip music ever... such good driving music.”

he laughs and scrunches stevie’s snout, then fiddles awkwardly with his hands. “you had cool parents. i don’t think mine would have allowed something like that. i don’t remember having stuffed toys as a kid.”

“i do have really cool parents,” she agrees, earnestly, grabbing a photo off her bedside to show baz and shuffling closer so he could see too. “here they are in the eighties - how mad are their clothes in this?” she misses her parents during term time, they’re a close family and bee has always struggled with homesickness. “we do a big new years’ party at one of my dad’s hotels every year. you should come this year! you can bring anybody you want, i’ll sort it all out - it is SO fun. there’s always a theme, but i don’t know what it is this year...”

“ hmm, ” caleb listened — he loved fleetwood mac, and he loved stevie nicks even more. “ i just feel like he looks like a brian, you know ? ” he laughed a little, more so at her attempt to seem cool. “ if it makes you feel any better, i had a purple dinosaur called bowie and i genuinely could not sleep without him until i was, like, fifteen…so, i was obviously cool as well. ”

she laughed, taking a good look at the stuffed dog. “you know, i think you’re right, brian totally suits him better.” she glanced up at caleb. “do you like your name, or would you change it if you could? i always felt like my parents named me too early. ‘beatrice’ doesn’t suit me at all.”

“how did you manage to convince the cooks to let us have free roam of the ingredients and equipment today, anyways?” ivy asks her friend, quite astonished that she’d been able to snag the kitchen so the both of them could spend a day off baking–she certainly wasn’t one to bite the hand that feeds her (or lets her make cakes and cookies, in this case), though. the whole space smells like vanilla and sugar and somehow she had managed to get flour on her forehead; ivy couldn’t have asked for a more perfect sunday. since she’d spent her childhood being waited on hand and foot by a menagerie of household staff, she’d only recently realized the joy of tasting one’s own hard work. and damn if it wasn’t sweet.

“that’s for me to know and for you to never find out,” she teased, tapping her nose. really she had just befriended some of the kitchen staff - a byproduct of talking way too much to anyone she bumped into - and had sweet-talked the head chef into letting them use one of the worksurfaces. “what i didn’t tell you is that we are making dessert for the whole school,” she deadpanned, cracking a grin a second later to let her friend know she was joking. “did i get you?” she laughed, bumping shoulders with her companionably. “okay, what do you want to make next - the banana bread will be another twenty minutes so we can do something quick!”

– YIKES. there’s a moment of silence between them, and it’s clear that claire isn’t the most nurturing of spirits. “well, yeah, i just figured we’d never had and i could probably teach you a few things but – maybe we better table that for another time,” she laughs, unable to help herself. claire isn’t exactly the most patient of teachers, but she also knows that there’s a huge importance in knowing how to defend yourself. she’s seen that first hand. “you good?”

she’s not good. her face is bright red and she might go as far as to say that she is very, very bad. “mmhm,” she hums, too quickly, making a big deal of brushing herself down, “all good - thank you so much.” there’s a pause and bee swallows thickly. there goes her big chance. “claire,” she tucks a bit of hair behind her ear, “uh- i’m no good at fighting but i thought we could maybe hang out some other time... we could watch a film or... i don’t know, go for a walk or something?”

“oh, sorry!” luci exclaimed, almost running into the nearest person. he was balancing a stack of books that he could barely see over, his visibility was not great. he steadied the pile of books the best he could, smiling awkwardly at the other person, “sorry, i was a bit checked out.” lucius nodded towards the books, hoping his library pun landed.

bee broke into a grin at how apologetic he was. “you’re SO fine, don’t worry at all.” she tilted her head to the side to inspect the names on the spines, glancing back up to meet his eyes with a bemused expression at his truly terrible pun. “hope you’re better at linguistics than you are at jokes,” she teased.

“His name is Stevie, after Stevie Nicks, y’know... from the band Fleetwood Mac, even though she was a woman... my parents were big fans back in the day, and I used to take him literally everywhere. I was a very cool kid, what can I say?” ||  @gallagherstart

“The one thing this freaking college has me insecure about is how threatening I actually look.” The curly brunette said to her classmate, walking backwards slowly, so she could face the other. It wasn’t a big insecurity; she could find plenty of things college has her insecure about. But, only a light joke about herself. “ I can’t have this face,” Halle circles her finger, clockwise around her face, “ and come up to someone and say, ‘ hello, my name is Halle Bell. You are my subject. Prepare to die’.” She giggled at her own silly reference. “I think they would definitely just shut the door or something.”

“Definitely not,” Bee rolled her eyes, grinning. To her Halle didn’t look like she would hurt a fly - but then again, she’d known the other girl for most of her life, and knew what made her tick. “I have resting bitch face, I think,” she mused, “so a lot of people in first year thought I was really mean and wouldn’t even let me close enough to talk to them. Wait- let me show you...” She composed her face into something particularly unwelcoming, glaring down the corridor.

“fully true,” bee nodded, looking serious for a moment, “i would, like... totally let madam satan from that the chilling adventures of sabrina netflix show punch me in the face.”

he snorts, but he finds bee’s actions endearing. it was a wonder to him how she ever ended up at a school like this. “thanks, bee.” he downs the drink in one go. “oh, this is–” he puzzles at it. “there’s no alcohol in this.”

she smiles back, expression quickly turning wide-eyed when baz downs the whole thing. “oh my god, baz.” she mentally marks this down under ‘worrying behaviour’ and tries to settle her expression into something less concerned - she doesn’t want to scare him off. “you get right to it don’t you - no messing around! sorry, should have said. your poor teeth! all that sugar, god.”

    she could only blink in surprise as her drink was taken. brows furrowed in confusion - only to be replaced with laughter as she was twirled. allowing herself to be twirled, thalia could feel any tension she held leaving her body as she relaxed. ❛ we aren’t that old. ❜

she dropped down and picked thalia’s drink back up, handing it to her. “speak for yourself -- i feel ancient. just LOOK at all these tiny babies everywhere, so fresh faced and hopeful.” she glanced at a group of first year girls gathered to their left. “i swear they get younger every single year. i, for one, have never been that young in my life.”

regina laughed, head tipping back, “i do have great powers of persuasion. i think i may be able to work that out for you.” she gave bee an over-exaggerated wink, “i cannot think of a mission more worthwhile.” there were very few people regina got like this with. bee- and her friendship with her- brought out a more fun, genuine side, “i’ll make sure it’s done if it’s the last thing i do. i think it will require all of my gallagher training.”

“you’re the best and i love you to absolute DEATH,” she grinned, bundling regina up in a massive hug, swaying slightly. “ugh -- i can’t believe this is one of our last ever galas together. i'm furious. i can’t even think about it -- it’s too much. you have to promise me that we will still do fun things when we are old and boring and doing lots of secret government things.”

regardless if bee had been her assigned partner or not, she had no qualms about entertaining her with a game or two. after all, she was the person to provide comic relief in times of boredom, or at least that’s what she claimed her purpose at social events were. “alright, man. let’s do this. you wanna go first or should i?” normally, she would’ve jumped right into the game, but she figured being polite had been the way to go at a fancy party. plus, she didn’t want to seem too excited in front of her companion either.

“i can start,” she nodded, immediately going blank on any and all potential questions. she was terrible at games like this, could never come up with anything for truth or dare or ‘never have i ever’ either. “let’s see... would you rather get to be a professional spy, but forget all of your gallagher years and everyone you met here FOREVER, or remember everything from your college years and have to work in the normal world?”

– “SO, YOU FEELING TOUGH TODAY?” it’s the question of the day, usually one after claire has had a long one. it’s usually when she’s tired and plagued by unwanted thoughts, she wants something – or someone to help her take her mind off it. namely, a target. “i kind of need to have a go on the mat, so. if you think you can take me, let’s practice?” she offers. this is sort of her way of being friendly, although it probably comes off as more abrasive than anything else.

“me?” bee swallows thickly, glancing behind her as if there might be someone else out of sight that claire is actually talking to. “wow- well ... i’m not brilliant.” this is a wild understatement. she is so terrible at all elements of physical combat that she was forcibly removed from all such classes at the end of her first year. nevertheless, the chance to maybe talk to claire was too tempting. she didn’t mind being embarrassed. “it’s been a while si-” she tripped over the edge of the mat, just catching herself in time. “CRAP. sorry.”

Lou paused, looking up when she heard another voice and gave Bee a small smile when she saw her. “No not yet, just needed some air.” No amount of perfume and cologne could disguise how much the ballroom was starting to smell like sweat. “What about you? Done for the night?”

She seemed to consider it. “Maybe,” she nodded, “it’s kind of loud and warm in there and I seem to just be mostly getting in people’s way now.” She perched on the steps in front of them, unbuckling her heels. “Plus, these shoes are murdering me - I don’t know how everyone does it.”

“damn, i hate that shite. the last thing i need in a conversation is pity.” he cracks a smile for her sake and attempts to move the conversation on. “let’s get a drink. if we have to be here for school, might as well have fun, right?”

“oh, i had something so fun earlier, hang on.” she held up a finger in a pause gesture, turning to face the bar. the girl she’d talked to earlier, who couldn’t have been much older than them, greeted bee enthusiastically. after a couple of minutes she presented her with two non-alcoholic cocktails, dropping umbrellas in the top with a wink. “here you go, baz,” she presented it to him with a flourish, brushing some lint off the shoulder of his suit jacket, “now we look like real fancy gala guests.”
