Ranma ½
Hyped for the reanimated Ranma!! Brings back my childhood
I'm not going anywhere, hbo max wants to forget about the gay pirates so fuck that, I'm never going to stop talking about them and appreciating what we got, this show was revolutionary for so many of us.
Congratulations on nailing the besotted look! 😍
Ed eyes are everything.
i think the reason a lot of people are having trouble with the father figure thing is thinking too much about the concept of father figures and mentorship in general, instead of the specific relationship ed had with his own actual father.
we've got a series of father figures for ed now: father teach, hornigold, izzy and - yes, ok, it's played for laughs but pop pop. what do those guys have in common? especially in terms of how they relate to ed?
they're all prone to explosive anger.
they're all verbally abusive toward ed. (there was a lot of talk last season about how ed was surprisingly tolerant of izzy's open verbal hostility toward him in 1x04, and there's a lot of stuff you could dig into in terms of what that says about their relationship, but i think now an underrated reason is that he is simply used to guys like this talking to him that way.)
all of them, in different ways, try to make ed perform a kind of violent toxic masculinity that he does not want for himself (remember there was a cut line from the scene with ed's dad, "you're making my son soft"). even pop pop - when he says "if you were ever good at anything, go and do that" he doesn't know that's what he's saying, but ed does.
father teach physically assaulted ed's mother while he had to watch helplessly. hornigold brutally murdered felix, whom ed seems to have been fond of, while ed had to watch helplessly. izzy tried to kill stede in front of ed - twice, actually - and at least the first time, ed froze up and found himself unable to intervene, just like he froze up watching his dad hit his mom in the flashback we'd seen just a few minutes before.
father teach and izzy both specifically accuse other people ed loves of making ed weak and effeminate, and physically hurt those people he loves because of it.
when ed is suicidal, he tries to get izzy to kill him, and izzy refuses, correctly telling ed he's scared to do it himself. ed then imagines a version of hornigold who also tells him he's scared to kill himself and then says "but ol' hornigold, he ain't scared" and happily does it for him.
what does it say about ed that he keeps seeking out relationships like that? there's pretty clear answers here and they say something really interesting about ed and about how we should understand what's been going on with his relationship with izzy the whole time.
I need y'all to understand how fucking important it is that their lovemaking song was La Vie En Rose.
Those translated covers you hear on TikTok take their lyrics from a Louis Armstrong cover of the original French version sung by Edith Piaf. The English lyrics are beautiful but there are some things lost in translation, which is why I love that they had Izzy sing the original French version while Stede and Ed are making love.
Edith Piaf's version of the song is all about the intensity of love and finding love after a trying time. Her vocals are incredible and bleed all the different emotions she feels while singing. Izzy starts with the English translation of the song, which goes:
But a closer translation to the original French would be:
"Quand il me prend dans ses bras; When he takes me into his arms/ Il me parle l'a tout bas; He speaks to me softly/ Je vois la vie en rose; And I see life through rose-colored glasses."
Obviously this is fine and dandy, but it's the translation of the original French lyrics used later in the episode that really get me. Izzy sings this:
Which translates to this:
"He speaks words of love to me/ They are every day words/ And they do something to me.
"He has entered into my heart/ A bit of happiness/ That I know the cause of.
"It's only him for me/ And me for him, for life/ He told me, he swore to me, for life."
It's that last verse that the English version just wouldn't be able to capture. The translated version of that verse is about angels and love songs and mentions nothing of a vow to love one another for life.
That's what's so special to me about the French version of the song being used in that moment. Edith Piaf sings as a person who has lived through so much pain and suffering (which she definitely did as a French woman living through World War II) and finally finds comfort and peace in the arms of her beloved.
That is ultimately what Ed and Stede are for one another. Safe harbors, calm waters, peaceful days and nights in each other's presence. They bicker and argue and hurt one another, but they always come back together so easily. Stede was hurt and needed reassurance, needed to prove to himself that he wasn't a whim, needed to feel the security of Ed in his arms. And perhaps they shouldn't have gone all the way that night, but they're both impulsive and obsessed with each other and they needed something.
It's that song that lets me know they're gonna be okay. They're intense and impulsive but they compliment each other. They fit together perfectly, and they find comfort in one another no matter what's happened to them in the past. They need their harbors, their anchors, each other. They'd never leave each other behind. They make each other's lives la vie en rose.
(Edit: fixed a translation error)
#just soulmate shit
There is a whole part of the fandom that is living in a different reality.
Folks who truly believed Ed and Stede would fuck graphically on screen, even though every kiss shown through season one was chaste and every sex scene actually just showed the before or after.
People outraged that steddyhands was toyed with then taken away from them, when there was not even a hint of steddyhands in cannon. It's Ed and Stede, it's always just been Ed and Stede. A 'love triangle' can be unrequited, you're baiting yourselves with that one.
I get it, I read a lot of fic and I always giggle to myself when I watch the show because of how different the canon characters are to the fic characters. It makes Stede's level of cringe (affectionate) even cringier, because my brain forgets he isn't the smooth soft Dom that he is in every fic. I have to do a quick head shake and remember who they actually are.
Enjoy your headcanons. Enjoy fic and art and theories and fixits. Fix Izzy's ending all you like, that's what fic is for. But try to get back into the headspace of the ACTUAL SHOW you're watching, before you watch it.
Leave your shitty takes at the door, or just quietly leave again, because you're spoiling it for the rest of us.
A date in the beach.
cold sheets oh, where’s my l o v e ?
Stede is so in love with his boyfriend. And viceversa obviously

Hice una pequeñita historia
i love david jenkins so much, he really said “the gays won’t care about the logic of time and space so long as we give them pirates who kiss” and he was absolutely right. at this point ed could have his full beard back at the beginning of season two with no time jump at all and i would just say thank you. lucius could survive being thrown overboard due to the buoyancy of his wooden finger and i’d be like yup, makes perfect sense, no notes. i am willfully forgetting everything i’ve ever known for this show. i am not just suspending my disbelief, i am loading it into a cannon and blasting it to the heavens.
Ed being absolutely besotted with Stede in 1x07 ‘This is Happening’
