My favourite little lamb to the slaughter to put in situations

I didn’t have “Occtis saving Julien from Thjazi, who was trying to save Thimble, who was trying to save Teor, who was merked by Juliens dad” on my bingo card tbh. What an episode
I've seen a lot of posts about how Julien pretends not to care but clearly cares about Occtis, which is very delicious, but I also think Occtis' whole "I am tired of pretending I give a shit about you" thing is equally fascinating. I can't stop thinking about how right before that he says, "I am tired of trying to placate your anger towards me. I am tired of trying to do the things that I think you want me to do so you'll stop trying to kill me." Occtis, as has become very clear, was abused growing up, and probably learned to do exactly that - placate people's anger, do the things they want him to do - to try to avoid the abuse. That could be a whole other post but I think it's really interesting that he snapped and said that to Julien. He's afraid that Julien is going to hurt him, maybe even kill him, presumably because of him being a Tachonis. I wonder if that had anything to do with him asking Julien not to kill Koral - he was desperate for proof that a member of his family didn't despise him, but I wonder if any part of him wanted to see if Julien was capable of forgiving a Tachonis enough to let them live. And all of this after Occtis saying that only two people care about him and Julien not saying anything to contradict that. I don't think Julien is the only one trying very hard not to care. I think Occtis is terrified of caring about other people he is not certain already care about him (Thaisha and Thimble) because he's terrified of being hurt (again), so it's a whole lot easier to tell Julien and to tell himself that he doesn't give a shit. But like Julien, he certainly didn't act like someone who doesn't care - he jumped right back into his family's house to save Julien when his shadow dragged him back. Two people who are starting to care about one another and refuse to admit it because they're terrified of caring and I think that's very fun.
I’m not sure if this will be helpful to anyone, but you literally do not have to be a good writer to write and post fan fiction. Yes you will naturally get better at writing and finding your voice the more you do it but you do not have to be or become a professional level writer to enjoy writing and sharing fics. It’s common to hear people praise fic writers by saying their work is better than published books, and while I think this comes from a good place, that’s not the norm or expectation. There is also a sentiment that fic writing is “good practice” for becoming a better writer or doing something else later, but if fic is the only creative writing you ever do that is literally okay. Your technical skill does not mean you cannot have fun and build community with your writing, or that other people cannot love and find meaning in your work.
commission for @aceofbasedesires, who requested an illustration of one of the scenes in @augentrust's fic The Bone That Has No Marrow! it was a huge pleasure and an honor to get to work on this, since i had already read that story and loved it to bits 🥰 please give it a read if you haven't yet!

Azune believes it's his fault that Thjazi was executed. Azune was ready to give up his life to repay the family that took him in. He'd made his peace, knowing that helping Thjazi escape likely meant death, but for a man who needed to have his life mean something after the sacrifices made for him, a man who was loyal to the Fang family and to the cause, Azune in his eyes let them down. Thjazi wasn't going to sacrifice Azune, and Azune feels like he's the reason Thjazi didn't even try. Now, he has to go on living and he's not mentally or emotionally in a place where that makes sense to him. Thjazi is gone, and he's still there and he doesn't know what to do with himself because he hadn't planned for there to be a future.
A man that was like a father figure or older brother was executed and he couldn't stop it, and despite his perceived failure, Azune is still brought into Hal's home and loved. From Hal's point of view, Azune is family and he's doing what he does for his family. He's still looking after Azune like he did when he first got to the city, like Hal did with Thjazi. And I think that's what overwhelmed Azune. It was Hal's tenderness and compassion that made the dam burst, because Azune doesn't just weep for his dead loved one or because he failed or for the detriment this has caused their movement. I feel like he'd do that in private. But rather he apologizes to Hal. "I'm so sorry!" This is a man apologizing not only for Thjazi's death but for being alive.
