On a scale of 1 - 10, how would you rate this ship?
Honestly, 11/10 it's so cute & they're very well matched. Friends to lovers + mutual respect + gremlin4gremlin behaviour! They are both 12 and very much act like 12 year olds so they fight and bicker like besties even before Toph joins the Gaang
Not to mention they're both cute little weapons of mass destruction like when they are fighting back to back NO ONE CAN STOP THEM!! Ultimate power couple, very hot to 10 year old me
Also! Toph is literally the only one in the gaang who does NOT care that hes the avatar. She sees him as Aang the 12 year old who is her best friend first, twinkletoes her airheaded student second, and avatar at a distant third. She has never idolised him or treated him like the avatar! She teases him and frequently gives him friendly punches (which is how she canoncially shows affection)
They complement each other not just in terms of elements (earth is opposite to air) but also by making up for what the other lacks in a positive way. In some ways they help push each other out of their comfort zones! Aang is the reason she is no longer trapped and coddled at her parents house, while Toph has taught Aang to stand his ground and face his problems head on
There's a theory that Toph ia the reincarnation of ummi who was avatar Kuruk's lover and got her face stolen which I subscribe to bc honestly it makes sense!
In the swamp episode we are told
In the swamp, we see visions of people we've lost, people we loved, folks we think are gone. But the swamp tells us they're not. We're still connected to them. Time is an illusion and so is death.
katara sees her mother (someone she lost and loved) sokka sees yue (someone he lost and loved) but aang just sees toph who he hasn't even met yet!
And in a later episode, aang has a nightmare where toph doesn't have a face. You know who got their face stolen by Koh the face stealer? That's right, Avatar Kuruk's lover. Just, all these clues in combination seems to imply that Aang has met toph in a different life, and loved her and lost her.
Seeing as Aang is avatar Kuruk's reincarnation + one famous Toph line is literally her asking if friendships can transcend lifetimes it's genuinely so compelling!
19. What was the moment in canon that made you go "Yeah, I ship it"? If they haven't met in canon, what influenced you to ship the characters?
I think always lowkey shipped them from their first meeting bc wdym they have the most wacky and adorable fight where one side isn't trying but winning and the other side is on the backfoot?? Wdym she immediately gives him a cute nickname? And then the dinner with her parents where they're playing footsie (bullying each other) under the table AND THEN toph opening up and explaining the way she uses earthbending to see and Aang being the first person to actualyl treat her like a friend and respect her powers without putting her down for her disability??? Like genuinely her intro episode felt like shoujo romance episode 1 meeting the love interest!! Peak Peak absolute cinema
And then Toph training aang and forcing him to face his problems head on! Toph and Aang being besties! Toph and Aang teaming up with each other! Earth being Aang's second most used element after Air!!
BUT if u asked me the EXACT moment that made me go, "oh yeah I ship it for real rn" ??

Like, theoretically I'm a proponent of the "ATLA should have ended without any Romance, just the gaang having tea and enjoying the newfound peace" but in practice I would 100% have been on board if it ended with a Taang friendly punch + hug & smooch XD
