Thinking about nostalgebraist-autoresponder. I could *never* do something like that. Someone on Twitter created a bot that was supposed to mimic me, and even though it was very short (tweet length) and not very good (pre-GPT-2) it still freaked me out. Every time it used a turn of phrase, I fretted over whether I overused that turn of phrase and sounded cliched or like a broken record.
Every time it talked about an unimportant topic, I felt pathetic for dwelling on that topic so much that talking about it was how someone would try to imitate me.
Every time it talked in a way that sounded kind of nerdy, or stilted, or bombastic, or whatever, I cringed and worried my writing was inexcusably nerdy/stilted/bombastic.
I don’t get this feeling nearly as strong when reading real writing of mine, maybe because I notice the ideas instead of the structure. And I don’t get it nearly as strong reading some other person making fun of my writing, because if it sounds too bad I assume they’re just being unfair. But a bot is never unfair. It strips you down to your soul and then mocks it mercilessly. Nostalgebraist must have nerves of steel.
I know people who have bots that mimic their social media posts and they're called ebook bots for some reason. They're funny if you know the person.
Looking for a new laptop Gothic:
1. Everyone who talks about new laptops seems to be some kind of laptop expert. Obviously the people who write reviews for the magazines are. But even the people who are talking about their new laptop on Reddit say things like “it doesn’t have the same build quality as the offerings from HP, but the keyboard is firmer than anything Apple or Asus has produced in the last five years, and the monitor looks kind of like the one on [laptop only sold in western Estonia between 2001 and 2003].” How do these people know this? Do they buy hundreds of laptops, and then only use the ones that work best?
2. Everyone, especially the professional reviewers, is obsessed with bezels. I eventually figured out this is the “margin” of the screen which is dark and doesn’t display anything. Most laptops have like a half inch of bezel or so. But some of them have 0.4 inches instead, and people *go crazy* about this. Laptop reviewers seem to think bezels are this dark stain on human existence, and laptops must stand and fall based on their contribution to the Great War On Bezels. I didn’t even *notice* my screen had a margin until I read the bezel discourse and checked, whereas laptop reviews seem to be having constant nightmares that their bezels might be 0.01 inches larger than necessary.
3. Sometimes you can find a laptop that gets great magazine reviews, and then you look at the Amazon and Reddit reviews and it just doesn’t work, or crashes constantly, or the fans never turn off, or you need to take out some parts and replace them with other parts before it will turn on. But the official reviews are always just like “5/5 stars, bezels are so small! Editor’s choice!”
4. Some laptops have a giant glowing logo on the cover that you can never turn off, and yet some people still buy them. Also, most reviewers won’t even mention this, and will concentrate on how many bezels they have.
5. I got my current laptop kind of randomly, and it’s been great for me for several years. But reading reviews, I can’t help but feel like every single other laptop would ruin my life in a different way. Pretty lucky that I stumbled onto the one laptop without terrible flaws!
6. Kind of worried that aside from different terrible flaws and being different colors, all laptops are exactly the same. Maybe the bezels thing is a plot to distract from this.
I got a Thinkpad because people are really into those. But one of the older ones because the same people insist they ruined the newer ones. The keyboard is good and better than on a newer Thinkpad I tried, so points to them, I guess. Keyboards in general got worse on newer laptops as they try to make them thinner and thinner for stupid reasons.
Software is not only not a meritocracy, in some areas it’s almost a perfect anti-meritocracy. Programming languages are the classic example: historically there’s almost a perfect anticorrelation between how good a language is and how popular it is. There are good reasons for this, but it makes a mockery of the claim by certain folks that software is a meritocracy and so therefore we should stop trying to X, Y or Z.

citation very much needed, sure, sure, C++ and Java are bad and too many people use them, but can you imagine people using K or Forth or TCL? Hell, even Prolog, Scheme, OCaml, and Haskell all have pretty serious problems that you should be willing to address before using them, and while I’d maybe take the latter 3 over C++ and Java for a new codebase–we have Python, we have Typescript–they’re not ideal for me, but they’re not bad, and they actually have functional ecosystems
Alright, so, the first thing I want to say is that this tendency has gotten much better in the past decade or so. “The worst languages rise to the top” is mostly a 1970-2005ish phenomenon.
Really what I meant that rant means is that “programming languages were more likely to be popular if they were free-as-in-beer, but languish in obscurity if they were controlled by one company and you had to pay a lot of money for them”. And this is a good thing, in general - open stuff is better. But it did mean that a lot of the languages that become popular were thrown together by relative amateurs making something to suit their own needs, while the ones carefully designed by professionals tended to come out of big corporations who employed those professions, and they wanted money for them.
(That’s why it’s less of an issue today: now everyone understands that being FOSS is table stakes for a new language, and so even the languages backed by big companies are easy and free to jump in and develop on. Charging money for your compiler is unthinkable today but was an obvious choice back then)
Regarding citations, I think the examples of bad languages rising to the top speak for themselves. For many years, PHP was practically the only language for web programming even though it was an eldritch horror. Perl was huge for a while even though Perl code is more or less unreadable. And of course, there’s JavaScript.
On the other side of the coin, I would cite Ada as the classic example of a good language that was bit by “if it’s not free, nobody cares”. IMO there’s a good chance we would all be writing Ada instead of C++ if it had been free to get a hold of in 1980, and my god the world would be so much better off if that had happened. Also, Ada got done dirty in a smear campaign from both CS academics and West Coast hackers. I won’t get too into this because it’s all ancient history now, but most of the criticisms of Ada were the very same things that everyone praises Rust for today, and I think many of them were really coming from a place of cultural distaste from both of the above crowds for the military (Ada was a DoD project).
And I think it still supports my point about meritocracy: the inferior languages succeeded because of network effects and the up-front frictionlessness of interaction, even if you paid for that many times over later. Is it so hard to believe the equivalent thing happens to humans?

I’ve never used PHP or read anything about it, and … what the fuck??? this sounds like a parody of bad programming languages, like some INTERCAL-style satirical art project … like someone looked at Javascript, said “this just doesn’t feel enough like the PL equivalent of something a child scribbled while learning to use MS Paint,” and put their mind to creating something even closer to the Platonic ideal of Everything Programmers Hate, At Once.

All programming languages are the worst.
That said, I don't believe "people wanted free stuff and free stuff was worse" holds up. Free software (whether as in beer or freedom) is still overwhelmingly developed by paid professionals. The idea of the lone developer working on a passion project in his free time isn't all that common in reality. And for all the well designed closed projects out there, there's another ABAP.
