Reblog if you’re also proud of type 1 diabetics.
Hope you didn’t miss this last Thursday!
On 30 July 1921, Banting and Best successfully isolated an extract ("isleton") from the islets of a duct-tied dog and injected it into a diabetic dog, finding that the extract reduced its blood sugar by 40% in 1 hour.
Prior to 1921, it was exceptional for people with Type 1 diabetes to live longer than a year or two. One of the twentieth century’s greatest medical discoveries, it remains the most effective treatment for people with Type 1 diabetes today.
Yo Tumblr, anybody feeling this?
Wassup Tumblr! Question time!
What is the glycemic index of a banana? And what does that mean?
 ----------ANSWER BELOW---------
GI stands for Glycemic Index. It’s a score between 0 and 100 detailing how fast blood sugar tends to rise when this food is consumed.
Essentially, the higher the GI, the quicker and higher blood sugar will jump.
This means foods with a higher carbohydrate and sugar content usually have a higher GI, while foods that take longer to absorb will have a lower GI.
However, a low GI doesn’t necessarily mean that the food is high in nutrients. A balanced, nutritious diet remains vital. To that end, the Glycemic Index is best seen as a useful tool rather than the ultimate diet-determining factor.
Bananas land in the middle with a GI of 51. They also provide plenty of nutrition including potassium, vitamin B6, vitamin C, manganese and magnesium. Enjoy as part of a balanced diet!

Question time! Politics can be divisive. So, what do all these politicians have in common?
- Theresa May, former UK Prime Minister
- Kim Schrier, (D-Washington) US House of Representatives
- Mick Huckabee, 44th Governor of Arkansas and former candidate for the Republican Presidential nomination
-------------------ANSWER BELOW---------------------------------------
They are all living with diabetes mellitus! This is a disease that doesn’t care for politics – people of any persuasion can be at risk.
Like or loathe them, they all are managing to live their lives in the public sphere with careful diabetes management. Politicians ought our representatives. So, if they can manage diabetes, there’s hope for everyone.
High quality Blood Glucose Monitors like those from #Bionime make diabetes management that bit easier.
