Calling your senators/reps is a hell of an adrenaline rush boy howdy. Not helped at all by the bizzareness of having somebody pick up on the first ring.

I wrote my own script using a few I’d seen floating around as inspiration, but even the shorter ones turn out too long for an actual natural phone conversation. So if you’re looking to make your own, I recommend something closer to the following (can be modified to fit whatever bullshit needs to be pushed back against, with one issue per call):

Hi, my name is [Name] and I’m calling from [City]. Has [Senator/Representative] taken a position on the appointment of Steve Bannon to top aid to President Elect* Trump?

[If Yes, and they’re standing against the appointment]: Thank you. I would like to express my support of [Senator/Representative]’s position.

[If No, and they’re standing for the appointment]: Thank you. I strongly disagree with this position, and want to urge [Senator/Representative] to show support for all of their constituents regardless of background by standing against the appointment. Steve Bannon [list one or two of his many, many disqualifying attributes], and does not represent the ideals this country was founded upon.

[If they’ve taken no public stance]: Thank you. I want to urge [Senator/Representative] to show support for all of their constituents regardless of background by standing against the appointment. Steve Bannon [list one or two of his many, many disqualifying attributes], and does not represent the ideals this country was founded upon.

*Yeah using the formal title leaves a bad taste, but to me it seems leaving it off makes it easier to be dismissed as somebody from “the other side” who doesn’t need to be considered. I’m hoping that plus an appeal to patriotic idealism (because lets face it, a lot of those founding ideals were perfectly content to fuck over women and people of color) can convince moderate conservatives to break step.
