Tuesday Tips - Structure/Gesture: Why Not Both!

Probably one the most compelling issue to deal with when drawing characters. There’s clear pros and cons to both approach. The key, IMO, is to straddle the line between both. Give appeal and energy through the use of gesture, but always give hints of structure, weight and solidity to make the character feel like it lives in an environment. I do a quick, dynamic gesture first, then I go back in and add some structure on a second pass. Here’s a shot from #zootopia that I really enjoyed animating! The big challenge was the moving camera and composing the final frame with clarity. Also managing 10 characters and making the focus and intent of the scene clear. I did a 2d sketch pass first to find my performance and choreography, then I worked really hard to tie down that final image of the shot with all the characters. That way I could work backwards into that final pose. I then animated it stepped on 2’s/4’s before finishing my final polished version. After animation, all the other departments did amazing work. The Lighter did an incredible job to keep the viewers eye focused on the center of the screen. WV06 call for entries: WEREWOLVES VERSUS: FASHION

We are currently accepting entries for the sixth(!!!) issue of WEREWOLVES VERSUS, a double-sized volume tentatively publishing in late Spring 2018. This issue’s theme is FASHION.

Everyone knows that classic werewolf look: shredded jeans and a tattered black and red plaid shirt, accessorized with blown-out shoes and a splatter of blood. But must every werewolf conform to the same uniform? If you’re a fashionable beast and you know the full moon is coming, why not don an outfit tailored to your werewolf form? Or fight against the tyranny of unattainable werewolf beauty standards by wearing only your fur! We want to see your take on the hairy, seam-ripping intersection of lycanthropy and fashion.

Interested in submitting something for consideration? Here’s what you need to know:

your entry should incorporate the theme in some way, either as a main element or as an accessory. The theme does not have to be overt (eg. your entry does not need to be set in a clothing store or on a fashion runway), but readers should not have to struggle to identify it

we will be accepting entries until 11:59pm on Wednesday, March 14th, 2018

WV06 will be an art-heavy issue. Prose and poetry entries are still welcome, but be aware that priority consideration will be given to visual entries

given the emphasis on art, we are doubling the number of published works for this issue! Instead of 15 entries, WV06 will contain 30!
