The international Black and Cuba roadshow continues at Princeton University. Professor Naomi Murakawa of the university's African American studies Department included the film and talkback with director Dr. Robin J. Being a White Latino ⠀ Guillermo Rebollo:⠀ “although I could be, and often was, a target of racial discrimination—from students and faculty members across U.S. campuses—, racism did not shape my sense of self, or self-worth. While I was conscious of how white Americans—and American culture on the whole—saw me, whiteness as socially constructed and experienced in the colony acted as type of buffer for that experience.

The monument of the Maroons sits on top of a Congolese Ganga surrounding a mound of rocks. This Caribbean UNESCO world heritage site was sculpted by the incredibly talented Alberto Lescay. It was contributed to UNESCO’s international project “Slave Pathway” or “The Slave Route” along with two other monuments from the artist. This particular monument represents the hardships endured by the people of Maroon dissent during American slavery. The word “Maroon” originates from the Spanish term “sminole” meaning “wild or “untamed” and often associated with or referred to as runaways or castaways. The people were made up of a blend of Africans and Amerindians who eventually declared themselves Maroon after escaping slavery in the Americas together to the Caribbean. Allowing them to developed their own independent communities where their history, culture and customs could be preserved.
