So the whole volume is a love letter Kerry wrote to himself because the crew show time and again that they have zero imagination. 🥴 Like- I’m glad Kerry realized this for himself, I truly am. But the result of shoving this self-insert theme into V9 was that nothing happens and the entire team learns nothing.

RWBY never truly struggled with feeling inadequate until this volume, which they should feel because they royally screwed up. They’ve always been the unquestionable heroes and have run around with an air of unearned self importance and blatant hypocrisy for years, culminating in an entire kingdom being destroyed, and the message they have to learn is literally “ya, but you tried so here’s your participation trophy because feeling bad about yourself is icky”?!

The team just learning “you are enough” is unsatisfying in general, but also infuriating when they have a lot of flaws that led to this situation they never had to confront. They’re liars, hypocrites, apparently brain damaged to forget Cinder existed in volume 8, self-centered, and exploitative brats who take advantage of Ironwoods amenities while lying to his face. Oh- I’m sorry but I guess they’re good enough 🙄

The rabid fans already doing the most to cover up their favorite show’s super inconsistent writing. I can accept the “shock” theory except Yang showed time and time again that she does NOT react like that. In fact, she is very quick to jump to save someone, often doing it with such a degree of reckless abandon that she gets herself hurt. One example of which was LAST volume’s finale 🥴 You can’t establish a character for YEARS consistently acting a very particular way, and then when that character behaves the totally opposite way because the plot needs her to, you shove your headcannon in as an explanation.

Deep down, they know that the team standing stock still and watching Ruby slowly drink the tea is silly, that’s why they’re so fast to jump to preemptive damage control. The level of culty love for the show, making it impossible for these kind of RWBY fans to ever admit anything is even slightly flawed is baffling. They would rather do mental gymnastics and insert their head cannons into the show and bring in real world logic into a show about magic bisexuals, and insist that they just so happen to be an expert on whatever topic so they can wave away criticism. All of this, instead of just saying “ehh- that was shot kinda weird. If they would have run in right as Ruby dropped an empty cup it would have flowed a bit better.”

Even the characters acknowledge this on a super meta level, with old, pervy Jaune commenting on how long HE’S been waiting a long time to see Blake and Yang kiss. 🤮 Like- ewwww. Lol This thread totally lost the plot. How is publicly criticizing something on a podcast that reaches millions better than tweeting criticism at one singular person 🤔 because you’re famous I guess and are entitled to not like something, but the lesser folk who don’t have a public platform can only use Twitter to heap praise onto you. Criticism is criticism and hate is hate no matter the platform or audience reach. I assume Barb is trying to make a point about toxic hate masking as criticism, but it’s totally lost here and just comes off as her complaining that people on dumbass Twitter are mean about the objectively underwhelming show she creates. 😆

I get the person she’s responding to was a troll but that brings me to a bigger point: Everyone in RWBY-verse also has this creepy, gas-lighty tendency to pick one obnoxious troll out of hundreds of glowing, effusive comments and start screaming at this clearly moronic individual, get everyone else to validate them and assure them their show is great, and overall use these stupid exchanges as a way to portray anyone who dislikes their show as in the same camp as the trolls. They never meaningfully engage with any actual reviewers who don’t squeal with joy at everything they do. They only engage with either the boot lickers or the trolls, there’s never an in between with this company and it’s kinda lame, to be honest. They’re 1000% responsible for how shitty the RT fandom is and why I stopped being an active member years ago (their abusive, sexist, creepy, predatory, racist company practices don’t help either). I’ll finish RWBY as a nonpaying viewer if it goes to 12 season like it was going to originally, but if it becomes a 200 season jumbled mess like RvB I’ll quit that too 🤷🏻‍♀️

My only regrets is that Cinder didn’t create spikes for Jaune to fall on. Fuck this imposter protagonist. This finale was a mess. I liked the concept but the execution is fucked to bend the universe at Jaune’s whim. 

Of course he lasts in combat the longest and falls in last because he’s the best. 

Of course he gets to be emotional over Penny’s death, because deaths in RWBY only service JAUNE. 

Penny’s best friend doesn’t even get to KNOW about her death, because it would take away from Jaune’s big dramatic scream cry.

The four main characters fall into whatever world they wound up in, OH and Jaune! (And Neo but that’s a whole different gripe).

Fuck this character HARD.

Super weird flex that everyone but Blake hates Yang, but I liked the episode overall.

Not going to get super spoiler-y, but the episode was mehh to pretty okay, clearly set-up, and can be summarized by: 
1. Conversations that should have happened way sooner
2. Everyone falling over how great Ruby is. 
3. STILL IN THAT FREAKING HOUSE! 🤯
4. “We can’t keep Ironwood waiting” (after chewing up 30% of the hour given having unrelated conversations.) 🙃
also side note: WHAT happened to Kara’s acting? It’s so bored and flat sounding this whole volume. She has very few lines but they all sound wooden.

Can’t wait for Ironwood’s really dumb “Mantle genocide” plan to fail by:

1. Weiss summoning armor guy or a queen lancer to move the bomb out of the city into the tundra

2. Penny using her maiden magic to move it to the tundra (maybe with armor guy), or blowing up whatever ship it’s on well before it’s near Mantle (I vote for this one)

3. Pietro the weapons genius shows the hell up again and disarms it

4. Fiona uses her super OP semblance to put it in her hand wormhole before dumping it back in Ironwoods office

5. Ozpin’s magical cane with its “only a certain amount of energy left” neutralizes it. We’ll call this Chekhov’s cane theory

6. Qrow kills Ironwood before the plan is carried out, whoever takes over command aborts this dumb ass idea

7. Outside the kingdom forces Ruby contacted arrive and help take Ironwood out

Sooooo ya. This plan is super dumb because the writers are bad. I loved the idea of Ironwood slowly becoming the villain, but Salem showing up way too fast just kicked everything into hyper speed and all subtlety of the character was lost. Too bad he’s a bland lunatic now. 🤦🏻‍♀️
