@dailyreading event #1 â character you relate to Elinor Loredan from Inkheart by Cornelia Funke
â Because by now Elinor had understood this, too: A longing for books was nothing compared with what you could feel for human beings. The books told you about that feeling. The books spoke of love, and it was wonderful to listen to them, but they were no substitute for love itself. They couldnât kiss her like Meggie, they couldnât hug her like Resa, they couldnât laugh like Mortimer. Poor books, poor Elinor. â

i'm AWARE this is a stupid hill to die on, but like. trope vs theme vs cliché vs motif vs archetype MATTERS. it matters to Me and i will die on this hill no matter how much others decide it's pointless. words mean things
trope: 1) the use of figurative language for artistic effect; includes allegories, analogies, hyperbole, & metaphors, among others. 2) commonly reoccurring literary devices, motifs, or clichés. Includes things like the medieval fantasy setting, the Dark Lord, enemies-to-lovers, and the Chosen One.
theme: the reoccurring idea or subject in a work of art. Death, life, rebirth, change, love, what it means to be human, the definition of family, the effects of war, etc.
cliché: an element of an artistic work that has been overused to the point of losing its original meaning or effect, even becoming annoying or irritating. (Most clichés are tropes but not all tropes are clichés.)
motif: a distinctive repeating feature or idea, such as the green light in The Great Gatsby. May overlap with tropes and is often used to further explore the theme.
archetype: a constantly-recurring symbol or motif; it refers to the recurrence of characters or ideas sharing similar traits throughout various, seemingly unrelated cases in classic storytelling. E.g. rags to riches, the wise old mentor. Again may overlap with tropes, clichés, and motifs, but they're not the exact same thing.

Well shit, Henry Jenkins, out here in 1997 dropping truth bombs
Oh hey I need this for a research paper I'm writing, thank you!
i mean he had been out here since 1988 dropping such bombs:
"'fandom' is a vehicle of marginalized subcultural groups (women, the young, gays, etc.) to pry open space for their cultural concerns within dominant representations; it is a way of appropriating media texts and rereading them in a way that serves different interests, a way of transforming mass culture into a popular culture"
Jenkins, Henry. âStar Trek Rerun, Reread, Rewritten: Fan Writing as Textual Poaching.â Critical Studies in Mass Communication 5, no. 2 (1988): 85â107. https://doi.org/10.1080/15295038809366691. Â
there are even some earlier works in fan studies but thatâs what i have ready to hand.Â
Henry's been amazing for a long time.
inspired by the prompt âi donât think iâve ever seen you smileâ from this list
It happens when youâre least expecting it, as these things often do.
He laughs.
Only for a second, yet it softens his entire demeanour, takes years off him. Crinkles by his eyes. Lashes kissing cheekbones. Itâs boyish, playful, and so genuine that it feels like youâre looking at him for the first time.
âI donât think Iâve ever seen you smile before.â
He glances at you, brows lifting ever so slightly. You hold each otherâs gaze for a heartbeat, then look away again, back at the still night.
âThereâs little occasion to,â he confesses quietly, a few moments later.
His words linger in the silence â like a secret, like a sin. He gazes into the dark, searching for something that neither of you can see.
âWell, thatâs a shame,â you sigh. âI think it looks good on you.â
Heâs caught off-guard by that, thoughts momentarily betrayed by a look of stunned surprise.
âCareful, now,â he murmurs, and maybe itâs just your imagination, but it sounds like heâs holding his breath. âOne might think youâre becoming rather fond of me.â

LIT MEME â  series or books [ 2 of 10 ] || Inkworld by Cornelia Funke â Isnât it odd how much fatter a book gets when youâve read it several times? As if something were left between the pages every time you read it. Feelings, thoughts, sounds, smellsâŠand then, when you look at the book again many years later, you find yourself there, too, a slightly younger self, slightly different, as if the book had preserved you like a pressed flowerâŠboth strange and familiar. â
âSo what? All writers are lunatics!â
â Cornelia Funke, Inkspell
Got any headcanons on how Basta would respond to being sick?
Is he macho about it, or is he a cry baby?
Is he clingy, or does he shove off help?
Does he try to push through despite illness, or is he the type to curl up and stop moving?
What do you think?
Ooooo that's an interesting question!
We haven't really seen him get sick in the books, but if I remember correctly he did get some very bad burns on his face during Inkspell and he still fought battles for Adderhead (probably because his life was on the line but shhhhh).
I personally think Basta tries to put on the rough and tough act in front of everyone.
I can picture him with a cold, sweating, head dizzy and sneezing out of his mind but still trying to act all nonchalant about it. He has a reputation after all! I don't think he would even admit he's sick in the first place and just continue on with his work as usual.
And you know how it is with Capricorn's men, any sign of weakness is seen as an opportunity to possibly replace him, and he does NOT want that.
Basically big macho, "fever ain't got nothing on me"TM until he gets so overworked and sick he basically blacks out.
That's when he starts to panic.
Never in front of the other men, but he kinda freaks out, a total drama queen. If anyone is in charge of taking care of him, like one of the maids, they're in for an unpleasant ride.
Keeps complaining about how he's definitely going to die and keeps asking why the fever isn't going away. (I think he can handle injuries pretty well but that's not the case with any form of sickness). This man is about to make his fever everyone's problem.
The only instance where he will actually start to panic in front of everyone is if he thinks someone cursed him and that's the reason he's sick. He starts trembling like a leaf.
As for accepting other people's help, nope. He's untrusting of anyone's intentions except maybe Capricorn.
"Why are you trying to take care of him? Do you think he's too weak? Are you trying to trick him? Poison him? Make fun of him?"
He expects the worst from everyhing and everyone so he only reclutantly accepts assistance if he can't help it.
We all know that deep down he genuinely longs someone that wants to care for him out of pure affection. But he will NEVER admit it, so it would take a loooot of trust for him to accept someone's help without questioning their motives.
Alright, these are my thoughts! Thanks for the question it's alway a lot of fun to try and get in his mindset, hope I did a good job:)
I'm curious to know what's your opinion!
learning that self deprecation isnt cool and just makes the people around you uncomfortable unironically improved my mental health a lot. like if you just stop saying negative shit about yourself you will genuinely like yourself more and other people wont be repulsed by your attitude and you will have more friends. it's true.
Extremely true. I had to get out of the habit of self depreciation, and I have a couple of people in my life who I'm close to who do it and it really is uncomfortable.
âBooks loved anyone who opened them, they gave you security and friendship and didn't ask for anything in return; they never went away, never, not even when you treated them badly."
Inkheart, Cornelia Funke
âNothing is more frightening than a fear you cannot name.â

inkspell and inkdeath are so cool you get things like reflection on how education leads to liberation, sexual violence (implied and onscreen), the morality of vengeance, death as an escape, terrorism (bad), terrorism (good) AND you get to see fairies n shit
