New York is my home and normally I love everything about it- but today was interesting. I was at an interview at Starbucks because apparently they have really great benefits and a flexible schedule or whatever. Anyway, I was killing it. It was different but I kept telling myself imagine how many more pumpkin spiced lattes I can get if I work there, right? Anyway, the manager is going on and on and then he asks me about my name. Yes, legally my name is Katherine. But I go by Kitty and I told him that’s what I prefer to be called. He then proceeded to make cat noises and tell me in secret he was a furry and thought my name was super cute.
It’s safe to say I left in the middle of that interview. I don’t care how many free lattes I could get. I am not going to be fetishsized over my name by my boss nonetheless. Who knew finding a job would be this damn hard?
I’m sorry to hear you had such an unpleasant experience, Kitty. But I think leaving was definitely the right thing to do in this situation. We’ll all come across a rude manager at some point in our lives, but this one sounds downright creepy. You really don’t want to work for someone like that.
One of my favourite coffee shops is looking for baristas as well, by the way. Maybe you could try there? It might not be Starbucks, but the owner seems like a really nice guy and their latte art is amazing. And if you need any help preparing for interviews or anything, please let me know.
