Secret Santa - Blaise Corso
kara-yan:
It’s Boxing Day, and the streets are bustling with shoppers. Their masses are dizzying; the concept of “personal space” virtually non-existent on the streets and in the stores. It doesn’t help that you’re moving against the plethora of squirming bodies, pushing and shoving through the crowd, on your way to work. Your feet have been trampled on countless times, and you’re pretty sure that some kid discarded his gum onto the back of your jacket. Wriggling limbs and hands are everywhere, touching you in places that you’re really not comfortable with being touched by strangers, but there’s nothing you can do. It’s one of the biggest sale days of the year, and you know that the precinct will be swamped with frantic calls from store owners soon enough.
But maybe there IS something you could do…
“Excuse me, SFPD, coming through!” you yell, holding out your badge at arm’s length and putting on a mask of urgency. The crowd parts a bit around you. The situation’s not ideal, but it’s better than it was before. Of course, you shouldn’t be taking advantage of your position like this, but nobody’s going to know…
In a few more moments, you reach the precinct. You go to hang up your jacket (and possibly pick off the gum), and a tightly wrapped package tumbles out from your pocket. A package that you most definitely did not have in your pocket when you left your apartment. Somebody must have slipped it to you in the crowd.
[TO: BLONDIE - FROM: YOUR SECRET SANTA] it says.
Hesitant, you peel apart the brown wrapping paper. You’re left with a pair of fingerless leather gloves. A quick look-over tells you that they’re well made—thin but sturdy, with exceptionally neat seams. You decide to try them on, and they fit your hands perfectly. The knuckles and palms are lightly padded, which you KNOW will feel like heaven against the recoil of your gun (no more painful blisters!).
The present isn’t malicious in any way, which greatly raises suspicions. Unsure of what to think, you flex your hands, reluctantly loving the feeling of the leather against your skin. That’s when you catch the glint of gold—on the inside of the right glove, printed in small, gold lettering… by the manufacturer? Is it a product code? At least that’s what it looks like…
You pull the edge of the glove back, squinting. You read five short words:
[CATCH ME IF YOU CAN]
[previously]
"Oh good grief! This is just like Thanksgiving and those damn Black Friday sales. Americans…” Blaise grumbled under her breath as she fought through the sea of people intent on serving as a live obstacle course for her and seemingly for her alone. Shouldn’t these people still be at home sleeping in? Recover from their “food coma” or “food babies” and yadda yadda? Because they’re too full to even move? How the hell did they ALL manage to swarm the streets and not be the slightest bit of uncomfortable? If it were up to her, she’d be downing hot chocolate while curled up on the couch and staring bleakly out the window. Family cheer? Sentimentalities? Psh. Those were not in her dictionary, no thank you.
But alas, duty called. No thanks to the crowds, of course. If they had just stayed indoors and minded their own business and NOT about that one awesome tv priced at an unbelievably low price, people would not somehow be trampling other people. But hey, what could she do? People were people, and she was the one who had determinedly signed up for this job and stuck to it. Speaking of…
“Excuse me, SFPD, coming through!” Ok, yeah, so she had to pull her hand away from her very warm pocket to wave around her badge, but the nippy air was a small price to pay if she could reclaim her personal bubble. But to maintain the bubble, she would have to keep her arm in the air. She wasn’t worried about the chapped skin so much as about the cold numbing her hand. She hurried the last few paces to the precinct and breezed in just before she’d lose total feeling in that hand for who knew how long.
Letting out a content sigh, she basked in the warmth blasting from the indoor heat before leisurely removing her jacket. Except a tightly wrapped package tumbled out from one of her pockets. The one pocket that had been left empty when she had so wisely put her badge to good use. Of course she couldn’t enjoy even the smallest reprieve from the outside world. Of course.
So my Secret Santa struck again. Without my knowing. Again. Great. And 'Blondie'? Really? Blaise rolled her eyes. That's the most obvious and impersonal moniker. Which doesn't narrow down the list by much...
She cautiously examined the gift. The quality I’d buy for my mother… And it fits like a dream! But wait. This isn’t something that can kill me. ?? Hold up. Is that some Au flashing in there? Peering at the inner seams, she read the unmistakable lettering.
'Catch me if you can'? 'CAN’? Are you questioning my ability here? Playtime’s over, bitch, so back to the playpen for you. I’ll be keeping the gauntlet you’ve thrown down.
If anybody at the precinct noted the dangerous smirk that seemed to stay for forever on Blaise’s face, they smartly looked the other way.
OOC: I am so sorry for how late I posted this. It's been about nine months since Christmas, so I thank you all, especially to Shirley, for your patience with me :)
Remember Sheriff Contessa from that Murder Mystery cruise a while back? Well guess what. He had previously been on the LAPD team. But of course, being a public servant is no crime at all. In fact, he was probably the definition of a stellar law-abiding citizen.
Unless you're the head honcho behind an organized ring of crimes while you're working on the force. For example, stealing at the scene of the crime, then foisting it off onto the lone cop who was about to pull the plug on your operations and expose your activities. And no one would be the wiser once you besmirched his reputation and landed him behind bars.
Who knows how he ended up north on the SFPD team. I always knew there was something shady about him...
Luckily, he was exposed anyway on the cruise and was very well taken care of while aboard. Good riddance to someone who abused his power.
OOC: Was watching S2E10 of Drop Dead Diva when suddenly...
Let's cuddle :)
#sorrynotsorry Unless you're JerBear, I don't cuddle. >:( I don't need that mushy sappiness. >:( Now scram. >:(
Hey, Blaise, been a while since I last saw you! What's been going on?
Oscar, my man! I see you’re still dashing as ever. :) I’ve… been well. I’m glad you could make it to our little shindig at the beach. Soak up the sun and all that jazz. What have you been up to lately?
Oscar blinked at Blaise as she almost fell out of her chair and listen to her suggestion on how to get some revenge on Seth. He wondered how offended she would be if he tried to cut her off. “I don’t know Blaise, I think we both like our jobs too much to do something like that. Maybe we could stick to something a little more middle school. Like putting food dye in his fake tanner or something.”
Blaise lowered her sunglasses and peered at him owlishly. After what seemed like a century and a half (but was actually just ten reeeaally long seconds), she pulled away and instead crossed her arms.
"Are you even listening to yourself, Santos? That’s totally on par with- with…" What heinous act were they talking about again? "With some low-level cafeteria food fight!!" And with that, she promptly turned her back on him, nose high in the air.
Wait, was she - the great, fiery, one-and-only Blaise - pouting?
Her shoulders lowered almost imperceptibly, following a sigh coming from her direction. And in a low murmur, she lamented, “There are too many witnesses, not to mention a sadly nonexistent flagpole.” She looked down, shaking her head.
"Oh, I guess we can…” She turned back and smirked wickedly. “…help him look like an Oompa Loompa.”

He tries not to let Blaise notice the worry in his face at her distant, pained expression. She tries to hide it, but she’s not exactly sober and let’s be honest, her emotions have always been painted pretty plainly on her face. It’s a trait to be loved and feared. Still, today is her vacation day, not the day for him to interrogate her about what’s really going on. So he returns her evil smile and says, “Oh Blaise, why do we have to pick one or the other? But this won’t be easy, Seth is often too oblivious to humiliate. Anything involving subtlety is out.”
Blaise cocked her head slightly. Was something troubling him? But the expression was gone in an instant, and he visibly perked up considerably. Maybe she had just imagined it in her not-so-sober state of mind.
She pretended to smack her forehead, but accidentally put too much force behind the swing of her arm and nearly toppled over in her chair. (Luckily, her hand went way past her forehead, so her palm only connected with air.) “The best of both worldsss! Why didn’t I think of that??”
Unconsciously settling back into her seat, she eagerly returned a smirk. “Alright, Mr. Dashing DA, let’s mess with Seth. Not too much, though. After all, we need to stay out of jail to enjoy some drinks.”
"Can we blindfold him from behind, then truss him up like a turkey before stringing him up a flagpole? Then we slash his tires and give his baby a new paint job. Maybe some ‘Seth is Death!’ and ‘Seth is the New Plague’ decals? … Wait, that’s too much work, can we just run him outta town?"
How much was too much?

Oscar, my man! I see you’re still dashing as ever. :) I’ve… been well. I’m glad you could make it to our little shindig at the beach. Soak up the sun and all that jazz. What have you been up to lately?
He observed her tipsiness amusedly. “Looks like I need to catch up with you before we can get too crazy. Cheers, Blaise.”
He takes a deep swig of beer. “Well, you arrest people for a living and I send them to jail so I feel like there’s a limit to how crazy is advisable. Then again, I’m only on my first drink, so maybe I’ll change my mind. I think maybe some of the other people on this beach trip need to be messed with a little bit. Seth Holland seems to be getting kinda cocky, don’t you think?”
"Hey, hey! I only had…" A long pause. "Ah, screw it, it doesn’t even matter anymore." And underneath her breath, she muttered, "I lost count."
Sobering up just a little, she remained quiet on the reality that was her job, and perhaps, her life. And how did Oscar stay sane through all his cases?
But worries would NOT ruin her perfect day at the beach. Avoiding those troubles was exactly the agenda of the day.
Blaise turned to face him with a wicked grin. Leaning forward, she asked in hushed tones, “What did you have in mind? Are we talking about messing with him… or with his current pride and joy?”

Wow, you really do seem to like to tell me about how attractive I am…
Kidding, kidding. Well, I used to drink with some of my lawyer buddies but none of them are nearly as pretty as you. I think maybe it’s time this beach trip got crazy in a way that doesn’t involve any condiments.
"I only tell it like it is." She flipped her hair. "And hey! Flattery won’t get you anywhere, bud." *hic* "Except maybe several extra bucks short. Because you and I, we’ll drink to that.”
"Ha! Yeah, sitting in a hot tub is much better than diving straight for the condiments. Hmm, crazy how?"

Well, I have been looking for a new drinking buddy. Seems like this beach trip might be the perfect time to get started. How about a beer? I hope you don’t mind me saying, but if any of the rumors are true, you need one as badly as I do.
I like the way you’re thinking. I’ll take you up on that right now. Ice cold beer at the beach on a day like this, and with a handsome drinking buddy to boot. Life is gooood. Hey, maybe I got the better end of the deal here! You won’t be hearing complaints from me ;)
For sure, but that’s all the more reason to take full advantage of today, yeah?

Dashing, am I? I’m glad you still think so. Not much going on around here, although there have been a lot of criminals to prosecute, given what happened with the Firstborn… Let’s just say the DA’s office has been pretty busy. So it’s been all work and no play, unfortunately.
Damn right. I know criminal activity has been skyrocketing through the roof lately, but make some time for yourself to cut loose. What's that phrase? ... "Carpe diem"? Or was it youonlyliveonce. But anyway, you know who to call if you ever need a drinking buddy ;D

Jeremy stood in silence on a rock further from the group. The sun shined radiantly onto his smooth tan skin. He took a deep breath of the fresh summer air. He slowly walked from the rock and began to approach the sand. Walking slowly, he let the sand get in between his toes. Looking out towards his group of friends he smirked to himself. Within a second, Jeremy runs across his friends from what appears to be naked, but in reality he’s wearing a flesh-toned speedo. With all the death and heartache going around lately, the detective assumed a little fun was in order.
"Ahh~ that really hits the spot." Blaise slowly savored her sex on the beach, the utter bliss from the drink working its magic on her. She hadn't even realized she had closed her eyes until she had finished the alcohol.
Then came the rude awakening. Huh? Is that Jeremy - streaking? I'm not a lightweight though, so it can't be the alcohol speaking. There's no way I'm seeing things.
But he was so chicken that one time I suggested skinny-dipping at midnight! Wonder who got him to streak in broad daylight in full view of everyone...
And if she were actually drunk, she just might have let her addled brain scream out, "What happened to Little Jer Bear?!?"
Blaise froze up for one second, but her lips quickly quirked up to form a small smirk. “Thanks for knowing what a real woman needs, Anna.” Taking the proffered glass in hand, she lightly clinked hers with her savior’s. “To us!”
Anna grins, “To us.” She takes a drag off the straw and sighs in relief as the alcohol hits her. “Mm, next one’s on you though.”
"For you? Of course." Blaise smiled at Anna behind her sunglasses. "Don’t tell me you already have one in mind." Settling back on her recliner, Blaise laughed as she added, "Sucks to be whoever is the DD today."
Blaise barely spared a glance to Colt’s direction. “I may look like I’m in college, but kid, you’re waaay too young for me.” And as an afterthought, she added, “Wait, are you even old enough to get me a sex on the beach?”
OOC: credit for that quality college line goes to Shirley <3
Anna plops down on the sand next to Blaise. “Nah. He’s even younger than Babyface, and I have a hard time believing he can order his own drink,” she says, shaking her head. “But I got ya, Corso.” She hands Blaise a glass of the cocktail. “I figured vacation meant something stronger than a beer.”
Blaise froze up for one second, but her lips quickly quirked up to form a small smirk. "Thanks for knowing what a real woman needs, Anna." Taking the proffered glass in hand, she lightly clinked hers with her savior's. "To us!"
Blaise scoped out a section of sand a ways from the designated hot dog stand race before setting up her recliner. Sitting atop her newest throne, she slipped on some aviators and proceeded to make good use of her sunscreen.
"Ahh, people watching and getting my tan on. Now all that’s missing is a sex on the beach.”
Colt looks over and gives Blaise his best Chesire-Cat grin. He winks beneath his sunglasses. “You making an offer, Corso?”
Hearing her de-facto nephew-in-law in the periphery of her ear, Natara spins around, “Colt! Aren’t you twelve or something? Stop it!”
Mal laughs, coming up behind Nat. “Yeah, kid. Pretty sure Corso gave up her part time babysitting gig awhile ago. You’re out of luck.” Smirking at Colt, he winds a hand around Nat’s waist.
Blaise barely spared a glance to Colt's direction. "I may look like I'm in college, but kid, you're waaay too young for me." And as an afterthought, she added, "Wait, are you even old enough to get me a sex on the beach?"
