witch hat atelier is great because in the first few chapters it looks like its really just going to be a cute magical girl story about hope and friendship but then you keep reading and its about how fascist societies fabricate a social structure to divide how power and information is disseminated and what life is like as a disabled person in that society. and then its also still about hope and friendship, but if hope and friendship could kill you.

when i say the problem i mean of course watsonianly. doylistically it's sick as hell that the entire population of the wizard peninsula is living under wizard cop threat that gets more or less dire depending on how much sleep one guy with an itchy pennant finger got. everyone in-world who's like, okay we won't do wizard medicine but surely i can read the directions off the back of a thing of tylenol? is getting a one-way ticket to Amnesiac Australia. every atelier is getting away with murder because the wizard cops don't care to investigate how they treat their students until someone snitches about, again, the tylenol. get fucked buddy
