You guys weren't lying actually I'm seeing a crazy amount of Coustas shipping art aroundddd....cute but I'm sure he's got other things on his mind the poor lad
What do you think of recent whatwt discourse where people were disucssing Tartah's forcing the truth out of Coco is potentially an allegory for SA?
Witch Hat Atelier has a whole chapter dedicated to discussing SA so that feels a bit strange. Yall are busy splitting hairs when you could take that axe to a whole woodpile
i know you've fallen out of interest with wha lately, but it's been so strange seeing the growing fandom become one big circlejerk where wha is the most woke manga to ever have been created, so woke that its fans are putting their queer ships in a knight moralis au. it's the kind of fandom that prides itself on being "queer and diverse" with any sort of revulsion to nuance (people who refuse to acknowledge that all characters are "problematic" aka made mistakes at some point) but at the same time they fall for the most reactionary stuff.
Actually watching the show as it airs (more or less, I can't watch each ep as it comes out as I'd like haha) is putting back some of my interest :)
But yeah, this is a same attitude I see around, I don't really do fandom and never have and the older I get the more I don't tolerate it haha. There's pockets of chill folk if you know where to look. Reminds of the pristine regard people had 10 years ago for Fullmetal alchemist despite, well, the contents
that fleeting comfort...

They're showing Tekkonkinkreet in theaters for its 20th anniversary! Im getting a ticket since you've hyped it up so much!
OMG hell yeah!!! I hope you have a blast, the film hits differently on a big screen - I'd seen it myself half a dozen or so times before on computer screens before screening it at a local cinema club I attended and rewatching it in a movie theater was like seeing it all over again.
If anyone's a fan here and interested, they're also rereleasing it in 4K on disk!
the more wha becomes popular the more i hate the discourse around how "progressive" it is. the fans generally treat diversity as one giant mix where being gay is the same as being Black or disabled, "it has diversity" i mean yeah but...which one? i would not recommend wha as a "manga with darkskinned characters" because the only one who has any relevance is custas and some of his portrayal is also a little questionable. i think the wha fandom prides itself a lot on enjoying a show that is Good because it has representation but i don't think they want to think critically about it. the only gay couple being cops is never brought up? galga assaulted children before losing his memory, i don't see how they can even like that guy. any character could have been gay, why did have it to be the cops? wha often comes up as a "both sides are bad" argument which is not radical at all. I think it has genuine kindness towards many minorities (which in itself i appreciate) but it's not enough, and it shouldn't be supported by so much headcanoning anyway
IMO it speaks of the lack of cultural curiosity of a lot of anime fans. While I don't think you should get into stories based around #diversity alone there's this deep joy in seeing yourself in fiction I wish on everyone, plus the slow unlearning of decades of backwards harmful tropes I can only cheer on. A barrier is going to be publishing. Think of that one story of a tabletop DM genderswapping a premade game and the players panicking because they're used to all dudes & 3 token women but the other way around was anxiety inducing. Even the most well meaning publishers are still there to sell to a greater audience for profit and, well, from what I know a lot of publishers aren't well meaning or open minded and will reject stories a lil bit too "woke"...
All this to say if you really want to see yourself in media you can't stick to the mainstream stuff, and WHA is mainstream. You need to look into stories that will often be made by minorities themselves and they are usually going to be lower budget and/or less polished and man are audiences allergic to that. It'll be more present more meaningful less token etc and you'll be giving some attention to artists who inherently get less...
........and naturally: oh my god if you actually deeply care about representation because you understand how deep that shit runs and how important it is..read nonfiction. Please. I am absolutely not an academic and rather dislike them so I do not say this lightly when I recommend reading some theory
Im not caught up, twitter is saying qifrey is canonically gay, is that true?
no & LOL
I have a lot more to say about that I can't commit to typing out right now but TLDR while I don't think that people saying shit like this are doing it out of nefarious intent it sure isn't good to me either & as always I wish we'd all have more nuance in discussing media in fandom especially if you genuinely care about featuring minorities in media and what it represents

i was thinking coustas would become more popular with his anime introduction but the more time passes the more i see people only discussing him in ship stuff and completely mischaracterize him…this fandom is pure hell sometimes goddamn
There was once a time I looked up "coustas" on twitter, daily, to find new posts, which I did for about two years until WHA pissed me off enough to stop and move on. I've seen more fanart of the little guy in the past two weeks that I have for the entire first year I did this in. Look up the tags of any tumblr fanart post to see dozens of strangers yapping about how he's so cool and cute and whatnot. The lovers are out there they truly are you just gotta know where to look
