Te’elis on Data and his Mother:
“‘Of course’, she thought, ‘he would have to be like his mother.’
‘Cool and reserved like water, but capable of bubbling with life and excitement.’
There was a softness in Data that she hadn’t been able to trace back to Noonien—he was too flighty, too excited—an ache in her chest began to spread.
She could imagine the agony in Noonien when they’d met on that desolate planet… Seeing the soul of his love in his youngest son. This realization colored those precious moments they’d had together before Noonien died in a different light.
No wonder he considered Data his ultimate success…
He’s just like her.”

friend sent me an Instagram reel yesterday with 1000s of likes that was basically like "pride and prejudice is timeless actually because it's about an autism4autism romance 🥰" and then the creator proceeded to cite moments in the book and film where Lizzie and Darcy are "socially awkward" and....listen. I'm far from an Austen scholar, but I have taught Austen novels as an educator and this kind of psycho-pop analysis that views characters as individuals with autonomy over their actions, rather than tools in a story written at a particular time to say something about that time, pisses me off more than I can say without sounding like an asshole. I'm sorry but Darcy isn't rude and awkward and even cruel to Lizzie because he has autism, he says and does those things because he's a wealthy upper class land owning man raised to see a middle class woman from a large family with no male heirs like Elizabeth as inherently beneath him which he expresses to her multiple times because it is socially acceptable for him to do so in a society where someone like him is privileged above almost all others. He is "socially awkward" around her because of misogyny and classism (PREJUDICE) and she is "socially awkward" around him because a woman of her standing at that time simply wouldn't have had much to do with the gentry but to actually push back against the shit that Darcy says would be social suicide for her whole family so she protests the only way she can which is refusing his advances (PRIDE). not to be the "context collapse is the death of media literacy" guy. But this is the problem with the kind of head empty, let people enjoy things, if I can't relate to it what's the point type crowd. Youse think you're being so quirky justifying incoherent and anachronistic interpretations with your rampant individualism, ensuring that other people never confront anything that challenges them in these stories like patriarchal misogyny and classism. Pride and Prejudice becomes an "autism4autism romance", completely undermining the historical context of its status as one of the great social satires about the class and gender politics that Austen so expertly observed around her. This attitude is why we have nonsensical historical dramas that actively hate history like fucking edgy bdsm "Wuthering Heights", Bridgerton, The Buccaneers, and even a 2025 Frankenstein movie where the monster is just misunderstood and does no wrong uwu etc. because individual relatability and catharsis is king over anything actually saying anything about anything now. Everything is relatable and nothing is meaningful.
quick question how tf have the data emotion truthers never brought up this scene where he’s doing try not to cry challenge or moreover the major crash out he had during this episode in general
After a lengthy study motivated by this thread, I give you my Data-bod headcanon!
Slim and toned with huge tits a softer tummy! In full honesty, I could see Data even slimmer and less toned, but with all the in-show references I've found, he's got at least a little more toning than I had expected.
As a bonus I've also drawn a couple pajama variations for him bc it's a crime he didn't get pajamas as soon as he had his first bedtime, and now that I've got a body headcanon, shirtless data,,,, mmm,,,

I struggled a lil with this one,, if you had something more specific in mind feel free to send another ask!! I’d be more than happy to make it for you :) (also I realised far too late into making the blinkies that I didn’t add a colouring.. I hope you don’t mind!)

Alright now that I have watched all the movies, I wonder why Data's emotion chip was abandoned? I'm not sure if it was a plot point I missed or something, please let me know if so, but all I remember is him having it on the majority of Generations, which was really compelling to see, and then in first contact (?) he turned it on and off, which I also like, and then the last two they almost backpedaled a little?
it's interesting to me, especially considering he's had over 7 or 8 years worth of experiences and then very little time with the chip, and we see that in generations he's having to catch up with all the emotions from the past several elapsed years, and I'm just wondering why we didn't explore that more. I mean, hell, there were plenty of emotional moments he could've had in the last three movies. I would've especially loved to see Data actually experience joy when playing with the young boy in Insurrection (?) , and while I believe he did enjoy himself, they just didn't seem to cover it as much. I am glad he was able to at least experience a little pleasure from the skin grafting, but again, not the greatest considering it was technically a torture/manipulation tactic. That's an entire conversation for another day. But that was at least balanced because he prevailed in the end :)
The oddest part to me though, was that some of the deleted scenes from Nemesis seemed to almost erase a lot of his current developments, or just some moments during Nemesis in general, which was particularly odd. I think we can all agree that Data has always experienced a very small amount of emotion in his own way, not dissimilar to how certain autistic folks like myself do, and all the chip did was amplify them so that they were more easily perceived by both himself and others. That's why him suddenly becoming very absent of his usual off-step charm was a little jarring. I will say Nemesis wasn't a total wash of Datas character, especially during the wedding and several other parts, there were definitely quite a few very sweet and well character aligned moments for him, but I don't know, I just can't shake the feeling we missed out on a lot of potential moments.
Especially considering the existence of B-4. That entire thing would have been so interesting to see Data process a little deeper with the chip, or even just with his own diluted emotions. The only real look we see into that is when he has to activate and deactivate b-4. Maybe I'm just overthinking, and maybe it's mostly just because I miss Data's laugh. I also think the added layer of complexity was *perfect* when he was able to switch it on and off, as it aligns well with his character's theme of wanting to be close to human, but knowing he is fundimentally different. Considering the depth of trauma he has from negative emotions due to the Lore two-parter near the end of the series, (I forget the episode names but you know what I'm talking about), Him actively making the choice to turn his chip off before he experiences heightened negative emotions is a very emotional trauma response, which I wish had been explored in more depth. That man has PTSD!
I don't know, I'm just rambling. I'd like to know everyone else's thoughts on the matter. Realistically they probably didn't bring the chip back because they had so much going on in the last two movies, but a girl can dream.
Do you people even realize just how sweet he is just wondering
One thing I wish modern tv shows would have especially new Star Trek shows is a longer episode count. I was watching a next gen episode where Data and Geordi were talking about how Data can train Spot while fixing stuff in engineering. The scene was 10 min long. There just aren’t character scenes like that anymore cause with a 10 episode count there isn’t any time.
