Lieutenant Te’elis Setha ir-Fethraie t’Mehta was born on the fifth day of the seventh month in the year 2337. She was born in her mother’s village of Fothi Bhoewen (translates literally to ‘wide river’) in the Fethraie province on Romulus.
Fethraie, Te'elis' homeland, is River Country. Fethraie covers most of the densely populated region of rivers in the southern hemisphere of the planet, spanning approximately the same size as historical Brazil on Earth.
The Fethraie region thrives on textiles and wetland crops, since many species of edible fish on Romulus are too large to live in the inland rivers of Fethraie. Fishing colonies control land around the Apnex Sea region, where the largest sea on Romulus is located. Most food in Fethraie is grown and sources of protein are cultivated from the local bird and small mammal species, as well as cattle (kept in many rural areas across Romulus) and beans.
The Fethraie region is known for its beadwork, a tradition that developed around the abundant clay deposits off the banks of the rivers. They also fashioned pottery that was renowned across the planet. They were also skilled boatmakers and weavers; building their homes by weaving reeds together and stretching them between the trunks of trees about 1-2 above ground/water line. This helped in cases of regular floods.
They used sap from the water-dwelling trees to seal the walls and roofs. Some of these reed villages still exist on Romulus today. The river folk are traders, and travel between multiple different villages and provinces using the river systems to carry goods from both their artisans, and goods from other provinces shipped between villages.
Fothi Bhoewen is the ‘capital’ of Fethraie, and the largest village in the region. Romulans care for their planet like a family member, with their urbanized cities kept tidy and away from major rural villages and farmlands. Fothi Bhoewen has long been one of the major trading hubs of the planet, and the luxurious textiles and beadwork that come from the region are hailed as the finest across Romulus.
Thue and Fidan moved their family to the Capital City when Te’elis was about ten years old, but traveled between there and Fothi Bhoewen consistently until they fled Romulus. They wanted Te’elis to experience growing up in the river province like her mother did.
After completing her education at Starfleet Academy universities, Te’elis entered starfleet as a xenobiology specialist.
She served at the Ohniaka III Science Outpost as a junior Specialist in xenomicrobiology and genetic studies for four years; during which she advanced to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade.
After four years on Ohniaka III, she was transferred to the USS Endeavor to replace the junior xenobiology officer. There she was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and she served aboard for two years before requesting a transfer to another starship.
Captain Picard selected her transfer request while filling positions on board the Enterprise-D soon after.
Te’elis spends much of her free time reading, but dabbles in photomicrography (microscopic photographs) and microbiological experiments such as mold colonies and micro-terrariums of algae, phytoplankton, and other microscopic organisms. Her favorite things to photograph and arrange are diatoms.
As of Requiem in (Enterprise) D Minor, Te’elis has logged 37 hours of holodeck time. 26 of those hours consisted of holodeck trips with Geordi and Data. Her favorite holoprogram from Geordi’s library is his copy of Saturday Night Fever. Her favorite holoprogram from Data’s is the 1913 Cheltenham Derby Day program he purchased at a shop they found while on shore leave. Her favorite holoprogram is her recreation of her family’s greenhouse in Spain.
An INFJ, or Advocate personality type, Te’elis is a driven perfectionist more comfortable sticking up for animals than she is sticking up for herself. She is more introverted, and struggles to connect with her peers, feeling alienated from them at best and completely rejected by them at worst.
She spends much time in her own head, which makes her come off as cool or unattached, when she is truly scared of the perceived eventual rejection she may face. Highly analytical and intelligent, she is a creative problem solver with a knack for difficult situations, but more comfortable with doing her work than explaining it to others or being a leader.
She feels very strongly, but more often puts her needs aside to assist others. She expects far too much of herself while also tolerating far to little from those around her.
Top Te’elis tracks (vibe):
“I drowned out all my sense with the sound of its beating. That’s what you get when you let your heart win.” - That’s What You Get. Paramore.
“Biology. I am an organism. I’m chemical, that is all. I’m liquid smooth, come touch me too. And feel my skin is plump and full of life, i’m in my prime.” - Liquid Smooth. Mitski
“Feel like a brand new person. (But you’ll make the same old mistakes) I finally know what it’s like. (You don’t have what it takes. Stop before it’s too late. I know there’s too much at stake. Making the same mistakes).” - New Person, Same Old Mistakes. Tame Impala.
“Make me perfect, make me your fantasy. You know I deserve it. Well, take it out on me. Am I your dream girl? You think of me in bed. But you could never hold me, you liked me better in your head. Make me evil, then i’m an angel instead. At least you’ll sanctify me when i’m dead.” - Dream Girl Evil. Florence and The Machine.
I think I found the one moment in DS9 where, for once, Garak tells the complete truth without meaning to.
There’s a scene in the episode where “Empok Nor” (5-24) where Garak returns to regroup with O’Brien and Nog after killing one of the two rogue Cardassian soldiers hunting them down.
Garak mentions how he hates to leave a task unfinished, with a certain wildness and malice in his eyes, and Miles catches it, like the fellow Veteran that he is.
He calls it out;he tells Garak that there’s something wrong different about him. He tells him that ‘That’s not the face of a tailor’ (about Garak’s appearance).
Then we get this frame.
And Andrew Robinson’s masterful line delivery in only four words.
“I’m not a tailor.”
It lasts only a second, before the facade slips back on, and he covers it with a quick ‘Not for the moment, anyway’.
In that split second where he says “I’m not a tailor” this is the most truthful Garak has ever been with us (the audience) in this show’s history. Even in The Wire or any of the other Garak heavy episodes, you can tell what he’s saying has gone through at least ONE level of filter in his mind.
But not this; this is raw, this is instinctual. This is the closest we will ever get to hearing Garak’s actual internal monologue because this is the one time that he’s NOT lying (in some way).
Because he’s not just saying that he isn’t a man who makes and fits clothes for a living. He’s saying something worse.
He’s contradicting himself again, but this time to CORRECT himself. He is correcting Miles, too, not just informing him. The tone he uses isn’t informative it’s CORRECTIVE. He’s not just fact-checking the statement, the deepest, most personal thoughts that any liar has— thoughts that are so close to your chest that you’re hardly aware that you’re thinking them —THAT’s the voice inside him that corrects HIM every time he says his age old line;
“I’m just a humble tailor.”
That’s the voice that screams at your mind that what you’re saying isn’t true. Because he’s not JUST a tailor. For Garak, this is the proverbial version of taking your bra off after a long day. He’s FREE. He’s free to act as he pleases. He doesn’t know that it’s because he’s being pumped full of psychotropic drugs which trigger homicidal xenophobic rage, all he knows is that he doesn’t have to hide anymore.
He can be all of those horrible, ugly, violent, bloodthirsty things that he hides behind that cool mask. This is Garak free of any inhibition, any restraint, any control over his own mind OR mouth. He makes a quick recovery with a quip, but the damage is done. The mask has another permanent crack in it.
Andrew Robinson I applaud you. Garak, I love you, my problematic lizard friend.
I feel like we, as writers, need to talk about how heartbreaking it is to write happy ship scenes knowing one of them is going to be a widow(er) by the end of the story.
I have cried about this so many times. How am I supposed to write them having a fun day together and also eventually write the funeral scene???
an angel gets chucked out of heaven every time someone insinuates data "defeated" lore in pic s3. they fused bro they merged its very similar to fusion/integration in systems bro pls pls he didn't kill him its IMPORTANT to me that people know that
Hello! May is EDS (Ehlers Danlos Syndrome) awareness month! As a person with suspected EDS and with chronic symptoms, this is a very important topic to me. EDS is hard to diagnose, and many patients fly under the radar of healthcare professionals which can cause them to suffer lack of treatment and forces them to live with their painful symptoms.
More Information about EDS and associated variations has been attached below and the infographs were originally found on an instagram account that I follow at the username the_chronic_chronicles
I wrote this post two years ago now when I first began to research hEDS and started talking to my doctor about symptoms that had been bothering me for my entire childhood.
At the time, I suspected I had this condition but was undiagnosed.
Today, two years later, i am diagnosed, i have a support team of doctors who listen to me and understand me, i am medicated for my OH, and i am working on my career and the art that i love
