good things about the nsfw ban

good idea to ban nsfw content on a 13+ website. like as a concept, it is a good policy

no more cp

children will not get exposed to nsfw shit on here anymore (literally you could not search the tag of any female character, including adult ones, without finding porn of her. after this ban was announced, a 15 year old i know’s first reaction was “finally i can search any tag ever”)

no more dudes with blogs that are just gifs of stolen footage from sex workers

no more nerds with hentai blogs. theyre not inherently bad but i personally hate them

I always think of, like, 2nd century scriptural debates when matters of canon come up.

General rabble: accepts bits from the movies and the books and maybe cursed child and that one fanfic they read when it crossed their dash. In general, whatever supports my ship is canon.

Proto-orthodox church fathers: The 7 books, 8 movies, Cursed Child, Pottermore, and everything from Fantastic Beasts including the new information in the trailer are all canon. If the books and the movies appear to contradict each other, your understanding is unclear. Maybe Harry walked into the forest twice.

Marcion: Fantastic Beasts isn’t canon. Cursed Child isn’t canon. The movies are not canon except where they provide a texturally harmonious expansion of the books. Pottermore and Twitter and interviews aren’t canon except where they support my main thesis. Those parts in the later books I don’t like are due to the nefarious influence of Steve Kloves. I will provide detailed textual arguments for my headcanons that contradict statements in material I consider noncanonical. I am a member of one or more character’s defense squads.

Today is the 23rd anniversary of my stepfather’s death. It usually passes without me noticing very much, to be honest. Today I woke up with him on my mind and have been carrying him with me all day. Perhaps the fact that it falls on the eve of Yom Hashoah this year has something to do with it. I didn’t have a true Yartzeit candle, but Steve was an ambivalent Jew at best, so I thought this Bath & Body Works candle with Brooklyn on it seemed appropriate, as he grew up there and even when he’d been away from NYC for decades, his accent was as distinctive as any self-respecting Brooklyn Jew for the brief time he was in our lives. I have not always thought kindly on his memory; his death was preventable and he kept his health status a secret. Yet the anger I have carried from that knowledge has, in many ways, been a driving force in my life for over twenty years. Yet as I awoke this morning, I felt a call to remember Steve, and to mourn him again. I spent time reading Psalm 77, in which the singer wonders if God has, in his anger, forgotten his compassion. I think, in my anger for the past twenty years, I have forgotten my compassion. My compassion for a man whose life was cut short when he had only just found love and family. Compassion for a mother who lost the man she loved. Compassion for the little girl who was so confused and bereft at the loss of a father who had come into her life so recently. Perhaps from that compassion I can find grace and gratitude. Gratitude for the time my mother and I had with Steve, gratitude to God for giving me the strength to get through the trauma and become the flawed, fabulous person I am. Tonight my yizkor will be a prayer of remembrance, but also of reconciliation. I’ll wager trying to understand “exit, pursued by a bear” with the text of The Winter’s Tale as our primary source is like trying to understand loss.jpg when all you have access to is a single overcompressed JPEG of a third-generation memetic mutation that mashes it up with YMCA and “gun” - there’s this whole twitching Frankensteinian mass of cultural context we just don’t have any way of getting at.

no, but this is why people do the boring archival work! because we think we do know why “exit, pursued by a bear” exists, now, and we figured it out by looking at ships manifests of the era -

it’s also why there was a revival of the unattributed and at the time probably rather out of fashion mucedorus at the globe in 1610 (the same year as the winter’s tale), and why ben jonson wrote a chariot pulled by bears into his court masque oberon, performed on new year’s day of 1611.

we think the answer is polar bears.

no, seriously!  in late 1609 the explorer jonas poole captured two polar bear cubs in greenland and brought them home to england, where they were purchased by the beargarden, the go-to place in elizabethan london for bear-baiting and other ‘animal sports.’  it was at the time run by edward alleyn (yes, the actor) and his father-in-law philip henslowe (him of the admiral’s men and that diary we are all so very grateful for), and would have been very close, if not next to, the globe theatre.

of course, polar bear cubs are too little and adorable for baiting, even to the bloodthirsty tudor audience, aren’t they?  so, what to do with the little bundles of fur until they’re too big to be harmless?  well, if there’s anything we know about the playwrights and theatre professionals of the time, it’s that they knew how to make money and draw in audiences.  and the spectacle of a too-small-to-be-dangerous-yet-but-still-real-live-and-totally-WHITE-bear?  what good entertainment businessman is going to turn down that opportunity? 

and, voila, we have a death-by-bear for the unfortunate antigonus, thereby freeing up paulina to be coupled off with camillo in the final scene, just as the comedic conventions of the time would expect.
