I’m reading this book about the changing arctic and the author stayed with the Nunamiut people of inland alaska for a while and talked to this high school kid who was like “ugh I hate going to school in the spring I wish I was hunting caribou” and I thought that was charming. you often hear about people who are devoted to preserving their traditional culture and knowledge but it’s rare to hear about someone who’s invested in the old ways out of pure teenage selfishness. school is lame and hunting caribou is awesome
You know that Margaret Atwood quote talking about how a major effect of existing as a women in a patriarchal society that objectifies women is that when you are a woman, even when you're alone, you can't escape that self-peception from the view of the male gaze?
The one that ends, "You are a woman with a man inside watching a woman. You are your own voyeur."?
I really do think that pushing this concept precisely one degree further in the other direction would explain a LOT about how we ended up with this whole "Incel, looksmaxxing, manosphere" clusterfuck, I just need 20 minutes and an antidepressant to articulate how

LEVEL 0: People exist
LEVEL 1: "Man" and "Woman" roles are constructed; posed as a strict binary with discrete and disparate traits and roles.
LEVEL 2: Man wields power; Woman relies on Man's approval. One role is perceived and valued as better, stronger, smarter. Requiring Man's approval, Woman cultivates inner "man" in order to see herself from Man's perspective as a tool to better anticipate Man's desires.
LEVEL 3: Man perceives Woman's "inner man"; Man perceives anticipatory and appealing behavior as deceptive and manipulative. The potential ability of Woman to manipulate and deceive Man places Women in a position of power above Man, which Man perceives as a threat. In response, Man cultivates "inner woman": a tool which he uses to perceive the "inner man" who Woman uses to predict and appeal to Man.
LEVEL 4: Man "sees" the caricature of "Man" further distorted by the caricature of his conceptualized "Woman" and feels threatened and inferior, but at the same time trapped by the binary which generates this power struggle. Inside of him is a deceptive and threatening "Woman" who he rejects; inside of HER is the Ultimate Man, who this image of Woman supposedly desires the approval of.
If Woman can predict Man, then Woman is an opponent who leverages power through engagement with Man. The only way for "Man" to escape the Threat that Woman poses is to cease engagement. He retains "victory" (escape from woman) by maintaining distance from Woman, and because explicitly admitting the possibility that Woman could ever hold power over Man is Losing, has no option but to tell himself that this is not Fear of Losing Control, but a natural consequence of Posessing Control.
Man rejects any but the most surface-level engagement with Woman, but because "Hiding From Woman" means "Woman Is Threat", and BELIEVING "Woman Is Threat" is unacceptable, Man attempts to cut Woman from the narrative.
LEVEL 5: Man, possessing the "inner woman"'s "inner man" but determined to escape the influence of "woman", mentally erases "Woman" but retains the caricature's caricature of "inner man", who is desirable to BE.
Man possesses exaggerated image of Man, who now exists solely as the Ultimate Desireable Form. In order to achieve this form, Man must constantly see through his eyes, but in order to remain safe in his position of power over Woman, he must erase any trace of evidence that he is DOING this for Woman.
Man must Be the Ultimate Man, because [redacted], who requires Man's Approval.
Having bought in to this dichotomy and fearing the terror and uncertainty of the unknown, unable to shake the foundations of the reality he must now experience, Man forces himself into choosing between floating without purpose or structure in a void where he has no control at all over his environment, or a world where he Cannot be afraid of Woman, he is Superior to Woman, and there is nothing more important that Being The Ultimate Man Receiving Approval from the Ultimate Man
terfs and radfems fuck clean off by the way, I'm a trans dude and you're both weird, but ANYHOW
My theory is this:
If we construct an environment where the rules are
"There are two parties that cannot survive without assistance from the other"
"One party dominates the other"
"Control is domination", and
"To be dominated threatens your survival",
it's pretty much inevitable that at some point we will end up with a significant population of the Dominant party whose psychological state is very much like a traumatized sailor who, after cannibalizing his crewmates for survival, cannot recognize bread as food and instead attempts to eat his rescuers
This Dan Piraro comic always makes me cry.
When I lived in London there was a murder of crows that lived near me. I fed them often, they brought me presents (shiny rubbish and cigarette butts they found on the floor to thank me.)
When I moved, I’m certain they understood I was leaving because I had all my stuff and gave them lots of food and compliments.
But, they chased down my friend who lived in the next burrough over. They had recognised that friend with me several times and followed them to their house when they couldn’t find me.
They adopted my friend and it was now my friend’s job to bring them snacks and receive the presents.
This was maybe 6-7 years ago.
I visited London last year. Went to see my friend. The crows all not only recognised me, they tracked me down. We got into my friend’s flat and not twenty minutes later there was chaos on the balcony.
We open the curtains, the entire fucking murder is there shouting because they wanted to see me.
Crows are the very best birds.
dehumanization as horror is great and all but what about humanization as horror. Being forced into a role that was not made for you. Being forced to fulfill expectations that you can never achieve. Being made to exist in a society that so cruelly expects you to act in a way that is against your nature.

The way he says “HEY WHAT THE FUCK” shaped me as a person
I hope today someone is in the lucky 10,000 and sees this for the first time.
this is how charli xcx sounds to straight men
I tried drawing random animals from memory in 2 minutes (based on a spilled ink video) but at the elephant I realised I'm really not good at it :'D So I ended up redrawing them with references just to see the difference, and ended up spending way too much time on it.
Part 2!
Went back and finished the video. There were more animals I never saw before (and one where I accidentally drawn a different one :"D ) but it's all done!
"You hear that? They're saying The Odyssey doesn't even have nobody!"
"They've got nobody in the Odyssey?"
"No I'm saying they don't got nobody."
"Nobody's there?"
"Nobody's not there!"
"So everyone's there?"
"Everybody but nobody!"

One of the guys I worked with told us a story about how, when they were doing archaeology surveys in the woods they ran into a bigfoot hunter. Bigfoot guy asked if they had seen signs of bigfoot, and he was like "Sorry, nothing like that. We're archaeologists, so we're looking for human stuff." and the bigfoot guy was like "Oh! I saw some Native American cairns on my way out here. I can give you a general location." and when he was like "Yeah dude, that'd be sick. We're actually looking to document those." the bigfoot guy was like "Yeah, they looked pretty cool. I didn't touch them though, because Native Americans built them, not bigfoot."
People like this are *invaluable* to archaeologists. I know there's a whole "they didn't ask the locals" meme wrt archaeology, but the truth is that most of us will move heaven and earth to talk to someone with practical experience. (The issue is that, since archaeology is a science, we then have to prove it, and that's where the dramatic journal articles come in. Also, sometimes it's a play for funding.)
if you’ve ever thought i’m standoffish, politely distant, or generally hard to befriend, know in your heart that i’m exactly the same in real life. my neighbours just showed up at my door drunk on Canada Day celebrations and told me how desperate they’ve been to meet me for the past few months and then tried to fix the water pump in my basement
one of the neighbours returned today with heavy machinery and gravel and fixed my driveway. i feel like a feral animal they’re trying to coax with little treats
they've told me the gossip which is that a few years back a 70 yr old man collapsed the bridge at the end of my road by driving his tractor over it, lost his tractor in the river, climbed back up the cliff unscathed, walked an hour home, and then the whole road fell into disrepair and all the campgrounds closed and the once popular waterfall down the road became obscure and secret. so like, be the change you want to see in the world. collapse a bridge to chase out the tourists. also you can lose widespread knowledge in under 10 years if one old man collapses a bridge
also i met this bridge collapsing old man on a walk a few months ago and he said to me "you should check out the river at the end of the road, there's a tractor in it!" like he wasn't the one who put it there
this image came to me in a sudden burst of enlightenment

Oh please let Grammarly get sued into oblivion
How the hell they greenlighted that. How there is no one there with a minimum of common sense to shout that this was going to be the outcome. How their legal department didn't murder every single engineer to prevent this from shipping
"We take criticism seriously" obviously you do not.
Too late for a "whoopsie, our bad", fuckers.
Superhuman, the tech company behind the writing software Grammarly, is facing a class action lawsuit over an AI tool that presented editing suggestions as if they came from established authors and academics—none of whom consented to have their names appear within the product.
Julia Angwin, an award-winning investigative journalist who founded The Markup, a nonprofit news organization that covers the impact of technology on society, is the only named plaintiff in the suit, which does not call for a specific amount in damages but argues that damages across the plaintiff class are in excess of $5 million. She was among the many individuals, alongside Stephen King and Neil deGrasse Tyson, offered up via Grammarly’s “Expert Review” tool as a kind of virtual editor for users.
Imagine being a product manager in grammarly and going like "fuck yeah, we are going to add a a Stephen King agent to our product" without immediately having a little part of your brain that goes "uh the dude probably has enough money to buy our entire company three times over, and he could field an army of lawyers against us for using his name without his permission".
Imagine being so full of yourself that you think you can just use the literal most successful author alive's name without his consent.
Holy fuck.
Superhuman CEO Shishir Mehrotra responds to the Grammarly “expert review” controversy, and whether AI is extracting more value than it creat
One thing about these AI tech bro ceos, they have no concept of shutting the fuck up. It is almost impressive.
READ THIS INTERVIEW! I'm not sure I've ever read a more vicious interview, the journalist does not let up, does not let him get away with nonanswers unchallenged. God how I wish more journalists acted like this in interviews.
