Bird #92 - Guadelupe caracara (EX)

Back to my roots with extinct birds... The Guadelupe caracara, also known as the calalie or quelili, was considered common in 1876. Within a mere 30 years, the combination of active hunting from farmers and habitat destruction brought them to extinction. The last confirmed sighting was in 1900.

With extinct species, I always wish we knew more about their behaviours. The closely related crested caracara are unique for falcons in that they hunt on foot rather than from the air, and pairs will cooperate when hunting. Pairs form strong bonds together. They are also known allopreen with black vultures, which is quite strange.

Anyways I just wonder if the Guadelupe caracara acted similarly, and which aspects of its life were different.

Bird #74 - the lilac-breasted roller (LC)

Rather lazy and messy, since otherwise I won't have time to finish the flags in June :C

I didn't think there would be a bird for the trans flag (blue AND pink, two uncommon colours?) but lo and behold! They do also have greens and browns on their back, so not perfect but very close.

Rollers are named for their territorial and courtship displays, where they literally roll in their flight! Another great thing is there's no sexual dimorphism, so females have the bright colours too. Pride for all!

May 18, 2026 - Brown-cheeked Bulbul (Alophoixus bres) Found on the islands of Java and Bali in Indonesia, these bulbuls live in forests. They eat insects and some fruit, usually foraging alone or in pairs and often joining mixed-species flocks. Breeding in most months, they build cup-shaped nests in low vegetation where females usually lay two eggs.
