Damn, this transition timeline is crazy!
Will never understand why Strong Belwas was replaced with Daario at the siege of Mereen in the show. Strong Belwas the Fat Eunuch was eating lunch, heard he had to fight Oznak in an open space, gulped down his sausage, wiped his greasy hands on his pants and said “ya omw.” He didn’t stop to put a shirt on. No mail. No prep. Just vibes. He fuckin danced around Oznak and his dumb ass 14ft lance—I mean, Oznak deadass brought a knife to a gun fight who brings a lance and a horse to a hand-to-hand combat challenge??? A piss baby, that’s who. Oznak’s head was gracefully liberated from his neck by the most looney toons ass character in Daenerys’ world. He literally shat on Oznak’s lifeless, beheaded body and used his frilly pink outfit to wipe his ass. Never 5get Weiss and Benioff took that away from us. We should riot.
Big fan of the vibe I Love You Like An Alcoholic by The Taxpayers and No Children by The Mountain Goats got going on. Shoutout to whatever the hell they got going on there
Kaladin really is the character of all time. He's a Windrunner. He's a surgeon. He's a former slave. He is Stormblessed. He protects those who cannot protect themselves. He's depressed. He has PTSD. He's been actively suicidal. He invented group therapy. He says ridiculously dramatic things with 100% sincerity. He repeatedly forms tight knit groups out of people. He will be warm again. He's the most eligible bachelor on Roshar. He doesn't understand why women keep coming to the clinic just to see him. He couldn't save Tien. He saved his father. He recreated Die Hard. He is the spear that would not break.
“God loves me. I know that he loves me. I want him to stop. I can’t take the pain.”
The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) dir. Martin Scorsese
This is just how I picture their dynamic. In the end, neither is truly successful in their attempts to change one another, it all just sort of evens out. 🤷♀️😂
Reading Elantris and its interesting how Brandon wrote Sarene as very “not like other girls” and dismisses the other women of the court as bumbling idiots, but in mistborn he defies the same cliche with Vin slowly realising she should not underestimate or look down upon the women around her and even comes to accept her own femininity.
I don’t know I think its cool how Brandon rectifies this sort of trope in his writing after one book.
One of the things I love about Sarene's not-like-the-other-girls-ness is that Sarene herself is both incredibly stuck up and a huge nerd and loser. She couldn't have been a bigger homeschooled noble stereotype if she tried. She has never met another girl besides her mother in her life and she's terrible at socializing. She looks down on anything she can't understand and that includes other women. I love her so much.
Vin's not-like-the-other-girls-ness is very different. She's much more socially smart, and not being like other girls is a protection against assault. Once she starts to feel safe, she allows herself the freedom to enjoy the things that other girls and women enjoy.
I think the biggest difference in writing skill between Elantris and Mistborn isn't in the main characters but the women in the background. In Mistborn, the background women have depth and an evident internality and their own motivations. Shan and the other noblewomen have a complex political web that's difficult for Vin to navigate. Allrianne and Tindwyl are fairly well-developed characters. Whereas in Elantris, the other women are pretty much a monolith who only exist to further the plot. They read as roles (mother, homemaker, wife), not characters. The motivations of the old queen completely baffle me, and even bigger characters like Karata don't have much depth outside of their roles. Like, we as readers don't get much of a chance to see the noblewomen outside the stereotypes Sarene's POV inflicts on them, but the only evidence we have that Sarene's wrong is that we know she's wrong about pretty much everyone all the time 😅
Anyway long ramble to say I don't think it's the not-like-the-other-girls-ness per se but the depth of the female characters around the MCs that shows Sanderson's improvement in writing women.
It's unfortunate how often the solution to a problem is just talking to people. You'd think it could be something easier like making a comprehensive chart or list, or reading everything you can find on the subject, but no, so often you can do all that and you still have to talk to people.
"light yagami is a misogynist" I say into the mic.
the crowd boos. I begin to walk off in shame, when a voice speaks and commands silence from the room.
"she's right... surprising, for a woman", they say. i look for the owner of the voice. there in the 5th row stands light yagami.
