I was just having this thought about art and film: I’ve been seeing a lot of people dissing Heated Rivalry because it contains graphic depictions of sex, calling it gooner slop and whatnot. And I see this sentiment around sex in film and television a lot. A lot of people question why film even has to contain sex; why not just cut to black? But my response is: why include anything? Why even make art? All art, whether we believe it to have depth or not, is a testament to the human condition and sex is a huge part of our unique experiences as humans and as individual people. It’s a huge part of how we connect with one another and people’s individual relationships to it have a lot to do with who they are.
People fear graphic depictions of sex because “people might get off to it” and that makes it lowbrow. But I feel that it’s no different than any other physical emotional response. When a director or writer creates a scene to elicit a response from the audience—to make them cry or laugh or ponder their own morality—it’s highbrow, intellectual, “deep” art, but if arousing their audience is included in that, suddenly the art lacks depth and is no better than porn. Why is the fear of someone getting off to something, someone “fetishizing” something, enough to make it “not art?”
Heated Rivalry was arousing. It was also incredibly heartfelt and extremely layered. It was obviously made with intention and I thought that the end result was quite emotional.
Since sex is a way that we connect with one another, allow it to move you. Allow yourself to be aroused by it. Allow yourself to be saddened by it. Allow yourself to feel joyous about it. Stop trying to limit or degrade art because you’re scared that horny is one of the emotions that it makes you feel.
