following crufts is fun but also my annual reminder that conformation showing tries its damnedest to not change. they make changes only after public scrutiny and even then those changes are small. and even then the owners of the dogs in question try to get around these things (entering a dog that physically is not allowed to compete for example). and even then the judges try to challenge failed vet checks etc. etc. i could go around in circles. it needs bigger change, the whole culture, not just crufts/westminister/other large public shows. yet the culture's overall unwelcoming and traditional nature almost entirely ensures this change will not come.

my thoughts:

dogs must complete breed specific health testing before they can be championed. cannot be championed if they fail.

breeds with a working history should complete a working test/general temperament test before championship.

companion breeds should complete a companionship test (bc it IS a purpose) similar to a Good Citizen and a general temperament test before championship. Stable temperament in home/family situations should be prioritized here.

(seriously. if CH is about evaluating breeding stock than make the dog damn well prove its worth the title beyond behaving nicely in a ring environment).

show all breeds - ALL OF THEM - using the same methods: same way of standing, same posture. not posed, basic. dog should trot nicely on the lead and be able to come to a natural free stack without handler manipulation.

before big shows any vet checks on specific at risk breeds should be done prior to breed judging (having it after breed and before group is baffling to me)

dogs should complete a general canine fitness test (size adjusted). Regardless of purpose the question to answer should be: can this dog complete such test soundless and easily, can it function as a dog, and is it able to exhibit normal dog behaviors without strain or issue?
