After a long break following the post-finale shitshow, I’m finally engaging with Byler again😭 I’m wondering if anyone has any fic recs where Mike gets taken instead of Holly? The ao3 search function is unwieldy to me

I love seeing people comment “don’t worry, ___, they were just your Tammy” under edits of doomed queer ships because like holy shit. The Byler effect really is that strong. They were so clearly in love with each other that “Just my Tammy” has become ubiquitous with “you were my everything” and I think it’s so insane to see that effect in motion. Imagine queerbaiting so hard that your shitty ass writing has become a colloquial code phrase for doomed love. What the fuck.
You know if they truly wanted Will’s storyline to be about moving on from a crush on his straight friend and finding self-acceptance? Then that crush should have been on Lucas Sinclair.
Without changing anything in the narrative, that would work really well. Him and Will have a solid friendship but they don’t have a connection or chemistry that is overpowering. Besides, Lucas is a solid boyfriend to Max and no one would doubt their love for each other.
However, they made Will have feelings for Mike Wheeler whilst writing them to have this deep and intimate bond where it’s established they’ve always been a key part in each other’s lives, that they make each other feel understand and seen, empower each other, have complementary interests, have fights that are mutually about them pushing away one and other, etc.
All the whilst Mike’s relationship with El is rocky and they’re shown to have no common interests and no heart-to-hearts, their chemistry going lacklustre by season and their character arcs being completely separate to each other (when combined they don’t complement one and other they regress).
Why did people think Byler would be endgame? It’s exactly because of these narrative decisions. If Mike was a lot like Lucas Sinclair or if Will had a crush on Lucas Sinclair, there would be nothing put into question.
Hence, Byler was “never in the cards” or “never hinted” feels like complete bs because all they had to do was write the storyline differently if that was true. Now, they just look like incompetent writers and cowards.
god i just went down the rabbit hole of how insanely misogynistic mileven is as a ship holy shit how can anyone ship this and think it's not egregiously misogynistic. like it is built off the fact that a woman should be taught how to be a human being by a man, that therefore that man is the only one who understands her, and she dies to uplift a man's character arc. she is there as a prop for a nerdy boy to feel better about himself i CANT. MIKE BEING BROKEN UP WITH BY EL WOULD HAVE FIXED EVERYTHING and im not even talking about mike or will getting together. im talking about el freeing herself from that bs. mileven just means el was simply a symbol to help better mike's character and a prop for these male writers to get their revenge on all the real world women for rejecting them. el, in canon, is simply their "ideal" woman built off of a man's ideal. that their ideal, romantic thing is for a woman to need a man. once will says "el always needs you mike" then mike says i love you. it sickens me.
this doesn't even go into the fact that will, a queer character who was sexually assaulted, canonically holds up their relationship i cant even with them
stop calling bylers misogynistic for shipping two men together rather than a ship where the man is literally the "nice guy" and the woman is the fridged female character, born sexy yesterday trope. im sorry but shipping mileven is a disservice to el im sorry but its just true i will argue i will.
the concept of michael wheeler witnessing chappell roan perform “good luck, babe!” at the vmas in full paladin drag
The fact that even Mrs Wheeler ending was miserable. WHAT DO YOU MEAN SHE NEVER DIVORCED TED WHEELER
since the creators like to leave so many things in the finale ambiguous then I'm running with it and making my ship canon anyway lmao. they belong to us now!!!
Yes, they meet up accidentally during college, yes, they never stopped thinking about eachother, yes, they're now free to face those feelings!!!
Imagine writing a finale so terrible it got half the fandom theorizing it was fake and there's an actual finale coming our way. Truly bizarre. (Love reading those theories tho, they're so fun).
Anyways, I'm doing my part with a little fix-it fanart :) I tried to make it as big of a tribute for this ship as possible. I've had so much fun these past few weeks interacting with this fandom, I'm truly grateful I've found a little space for myself in here. And I'm glad so many people enjoyed my art and stayed with me for longer, I am so thankful for you all! 💕 Reading your comments, sharing excitement with you and interacting in general has been a highlight of my days! I think it got me through this winter, it was a really nice escape. And an intense one. Whew.
I hope to create more fanart for this series in the future, maybe branch out into other characters as well. I'm still full of ideas! But for now I feel like I need to take a step back and let this hyperfixation fade out a bit. I need to focus on my college assignments for now, maybe I'll even find some time to work on my comic, but in the meantime I'll be posting some art that has been waiting on my drive :) I also still need to process the conclusion to this show, cause geez. Feels kinda terrible. But I'm glad to be a part of this incredibly supportive community. Never stop being so passionate, fun, and creative, y'all are amazing 💕 I've learned so much about storytelling and visual symbolism thanks to all the people's analysis and I can now implement it into my own art! And all of you should too! I can't wait for what the fandom comes up with now!
Lots of love 💙💛
Rb if you still love Mike Wheeler after s5
so.. the love triangle ends with stonathan and ronance 😭???
giving us everything but byler
i just want to say that if, in the future, i talk about mike’s queer coding or the subtext of mike’s queerness, i don’t want any of yall to think im giving the duffers ANY cookies for that writing. no fucking way bro, i’m giving myself those cookies for turning their weird ass straight boy self-insert into something actually genuinely interesting
anyway. i’m being completely serious when i say that so many of you should be writing and publishing your own stories. if two mediocre white men can write a half assed story and get critical acclaim, just imagine what you can do
"there's one story he can never tell" but he does, in a million different ways. at first it starts off as the mage and the storyteller, finding eachother and falling in love. and then he writes the same story for the sorcerer and a bard. and he keeps writing, and writing and writing; women and men, girls and boys, the same story that never felt real. until one day he sits at his desk and looks at the painting. and then finally, years later, he writes a story about a paladin and a cleric. it's the same story he's written a million times, but this one comes easier than all of the other ones. this one is real. and it's the one story he wishes were real.

went right from getting rejected by the love of his life to being his relationship counselor once again! awesome writing
the fact that Karen fighting one Demogorgon felt more high stakes than the final battle is crazy

Will occasionally gets postcards in the mail.
No name. No address. No matter where he is.
Always of art.
Postcards of paintings from all around the world.
He likes researching them and learning about the artist, what the paintings mean, where the paintings hang now.
He knows she wouldn’t be there if he went, but he still looks into the cities that the galleries are in. Reading about the history and imagining her telling him about it. Imagining her exploring. Learning. Existing freely.
He doesn’t tell anyone because he knows she trusts him not to. Trusts him to not try and find her.
He likes to think she still checks in with him as occasionally the meaning or subject of a painting will hit too close to home with him and whatever the current thing that was bothering him.
He wishes he could write back. Wishes he knew how to check on her as she checks on him.
But since everything ended, his powers lay dormant. Only evidence they still exist are the small ‘electrical faults’ that are perfectly timed with big emotions and always end in a nose bleed.
