I already thought after watching ATLA that Hakoda would have prefered Zuko over Ααng for Katara (not that he has anything to say about her choice of partner, but I think he would have approved of Zuko more).

After watching LoA, I am now certain of it. I mean, he did say this to Katara in the comics...

This line always stuck out to me as wildly incongruous for kataang. Aang didn't sacrifice for Katara, didn't help her see anything.

But what about the Avatar State?! 1) She didn't know he did that (and if she did, she would be fucking pissed). 2) He didn't do that for her. He did it for himself, so he could be with her. He fundamentally did not understand that the problem was not love, but selfish love. His sacrifice of the Avatar State illustrates this perfectly.

Now, there was someone who did sacrifice his life for her, who did help her see that she didn't need to hold on to the fear and anger that resulted from her mother's death. What was his name? It's there, just on the tip of my tongue...
