20 years on from the Port Arthur Massacre, John Howard says his greatest achievement as Prime Minister was enforcing the gun laws that prevented more slaughter of innocent people.

This story is close to my heart because I live in Tasmania, about an hours drive from Port Arthur. My partner, who I have been with for 2 years, was four months old at the time and was supposed to go on a holiday with his family on the day of the massacre. I can’t imagine my life without him and I am so thankful that he wasn’t there that day and that I had the chance to meet him and love him.
I really respect John Howard and his decision during that time and I truly believe that many people today are alive because of our strict gun laws. This is definitely one of the very few things that I think Australia is ahead of other countries for and I think that many should follow suit, because as you can see, guns, even in the hands of a seemingly ordinary person can destroy lives, not only for the individual lives themselves, but for everyone that may be linked in any way. Even today, Port Arthur remains a very solemn place, as this day had a devastating effect on such a close-knit community. So please watch this and just think of what this might have been like and what could’ve been changed to prevent it.
