he leaves scooter buried for bubble buddy, a (seemingly) inanimate object, to dig him out while the tide is coming in and later the ghost of scooter remarks HE MADE ME EXPERIENCE HIGH TIDE!!! and flies to the surface. you could argue BUBBLE BUDDY killed scooter but spongebob is technically responsible for bubble buddy and indirectly led to scooter’s death
