Summary: Will’s worst fears came true in the visions Vecna showed him. That his own personal hell, the absence of people he longed for, was caused by his own hand. The first time it was him taken from everyone else. This time, it was him having driven everyone away or else drifting apart like he didn’t matter anymore. Both times he’d been utterly powerless to stop it.

But he could take back some of that power - by handing it to someone important on the hope they’d hold it for him to use when he needed. He couldn’t let his own fears get the better of him, nor let Vecna be proven right. Not anymore.

A useful thing to know about AO3 tags is that they're wrangled by humans. A human being will read your tag, understand what it means*, and then connect that tag in the backend system to other tags that mean the same thing (if there are any)

that's why, for example, the tags

and a million more versions are all searchable and filterable if you just tag one of them. A Tag Wrangler (the job title of a human volunteer who manages AO3 tags) has made sure that AO3 understands that those are all synonyms, so AO3 treats them that way.

When you're tagging your fic, or searching for a fic, or filtering a tag to find or remove works from the list you do not have to use every possible version of a tag. You just need to pick one - unless using more is a stylistic choice you're making, in which case have at it.

*or research what it means - which is why wranglers really appreciate it if you put (OC) behind the name of your original characters so that they don't have to scour every source they can find to see if it's a named background character in canon.

There is also a nesting parent/child system, so if you just exclude from your search the canonical tag 'Homophobia', not only will it exclude all variations of it like 'homohpobia' or 'contains some homophobia', but it will also exclude all subtags such as 'Internalised Homophobia' or 'Homophobic [character]'.

Which means that if you're tagging for eg '[Character]'s Family Is Homophobic', you can just tag that and be done! No need to also tag 'Homophobia', 'Parental Homophobia' and 'Homophobic Family'.

AO3's tagging system is genuinely what libraries dream of.

Since someone asked how to see the meta and subtags, let's look at an example:

This is what we call the tag landing page. You can reach it when you're in the tag by clicking the link at the top of the page, e.g. where it says

1 - 20 of 1,885 Works in Centaurs

the underlined 'Centaurs' is a link to that tag's page.

The first thing you see is the Parent tags. This is, in general, what fandom a tag is stored in. For a tag like Centaurs, which can apply to many different fandoms, that is "No Fandom".

Then we see "Tags with the same meaning". These are synonyms/syns of the tag in question. If you tag your work with "she's a centaur", it will be made a synonym of Centaurs and appear under that tag.

Then there are Metatags. In this case, Mythical Beings & Creatures. A centaur is a type of mythical being, so it's a subtag of that tag.

Then there are Subtags. These are tags that are more specific - mostly specific characters as centaurs, in this case. If you choose to exclude the Centaurs tag from your search, you'll also be excluding Centaur Castiel automatically.

All of these are links - you can use them to navigate up and down the tree, so to speak, for instance if you want to see what other mythical beings and creatures are included under "mythical beings and creatures," you can click on that to go to that tag's landing page.

I was thinking about Dolly Parton and remembered something about her.

In 2020 I worked a job collecting medical record for insurance companies. It was Covid and there were many, many medical offices that were grieving and angry. It wasn't a fun job most of the time.

But one day I called a hospital in Tennessee. I was supposed to collect records for a NICU patient and their mama. I got to records and the woman in charge of records said there must be a mistake. They never worked with insurance with maternity or neonatal patients because of Dolly.

I asked what she meant and she told me, "Well, Miss Dolly has us send her the bills for any new mothers and their babies, especially if they spend time in the NICU. She never has anyone apply or anything, she just has us send her any bill for those families and she pays them, no matter how big."

I was stunned. I clarified, "Dolly? Dolly Parton?"

"Yes, ma'am! Dolly's been paying those bills since at least 1999 and so we just don't work with insurance here. It's why there's a mural of her in the maternity ward."

I cried harder that day than any other day during the height if the pandemic. For the first time that year it wasn't grief fueling my tears, it was a hope so deep that it hurt to contain it. When Dolly gave a million dollars for vaccine development I just nodded. Made sense to me. That's simply who she was. She saw a need and, if it was in her power, she met it. She loved humanity in a way that didn't require anything back. It was never a question of whether or not it was her responsibility, she just stepped forward and did what needed doing.

I loved Dolly Parton in the same way I loved Mr Rogers. Steve Irwin. Bob Ross. She shaped who I am with her kindness and she was a core part of my world for my entire life.

There has never been anyone like Dolly Parton before. It is my privilege to have lived in a world with her and I will do everything I can to make sure that there are plenty of people like her from here on.

I wish all rich people would note that Dolly is being venerated like an Appalachian pharaoh. I have literally seen art of her dressed as a saint being passed around. Someone on my Facebook was putting their flag at half mast.

And she was a good woman, but like, I want to grasp the wealthy by the shoulders and let people know that if you just display the average level of grace and kindness of a Cool Appalachian Meemaw then people will adore you. You don't have to be a Cool Appalachian Meemaw because every culture has their Cool Elders but soooo many of you rich weirdos want people to love you and you literally just have to do your version of what Dolly did. Just give money to smart people when you see something bad happening and ask communities you're connected to for what they need then invest in them. Keep your public snd personal life separate and just... be a person. Look for examples of cool people who are the backbones of communities then copy them. This is an open book test and it is embarrassing how many people are failing.
