Title: Field Studies, 2012

Description: I was so happy to come across this book at the LAABF! I have been inundated with photography zines as of late and have been looking to illustrators and comic artists to supplement the non-photo side of my book collection. This small book (it's about 5"x7") is filled with diary-style entries of simple pencil drawings, all signed and dated. Koch provides a table of locations, but it's also nice to look at these drawings consecutively with no context, allowing the viewer to make their own narrative or conclusions. As a side not Aidan was really nice to talk with for a second about drawing, it's always a major plus to meet the artist.

Artist: Ricardo Nava
Description: This awesome little photo zine was a gift from my best friend who picked it up from goodpressgallery in Glasgow. It involves a dog and found and reappropriated photography so naturally I'm a fan. Nava came across these photographs at a flea market in Berlin in 2012 and decided to curate these family dog photos into a bizarre and beautiful, staple-bound zine. It is currently listed as sold out online, though there is a list of book stores that may still carry it. This zine comes with a bonus photo folio and is 44 pages, full color, in an edition of 50 (#28).

Artist: Maddi Montero
Description: I picked up this zine from the Chien Lunatique's online store. I have been following Maddi's photography blog for a while and was so excited to pick up a couple of her zines. She is an avid photographer from Barcelona, Spain. This is a classic-feeling black and white photography zine depicting interior, on-flash photographs of objects which she then curates into visually appealing spreads. Description: I came across this zine online and fell in love with the line drawings and cover image. This book is part of a series comic zines that follow the trials and errors of a snake on the run form a hunter. I was immediately interested in this zine by the simplicity of the cover design. That in combination with the whimsical and sometimes crude line drawings on the inside make this such a cool book to own. Check out the series and pick up your own copiy of the fourth installment while it's still around. (The first three are sold out)

Title: Untitled (Drawings from June 2014)
Artist: Jeffrey Cheung
Description: I picked up this zine from Alley Cat Bookstore and Gallery in the Mission here in SF. It was a zine that was released that coincided with an exhibition that artist Jeffrey Cheung was involved in called Face and Figure. It was the last copy at Alley Cat so I was happy to get it in time to add to my book collection. The show was also really cool and had awesome posters that I had seen around without realizing what they were for. This zine printed on peach card stock is a new favorite, and I especially love the centerfold pool scene. Its all and all a great collection of Cheung's humorous and delicate line drawings of male figures and you should own a copy - check out the links below to learn more about the artist and to grab a copy of your own!

Description: This was my first stab at a staple-bound photo zine. It is part one of a two part book homage to the summer of 2013 when I lived and worked/interned in LA for five months. A full-color photo zine curated by myself featuring a rainbow rolled cover/letter pressed cover. I made an edition of ten sets which have all been given away or sold. Title: An Object, 2014
Artist: No Age
Details: This art object was the result of a collaboration between The Thing Quarterly (SF) and the band No Age (LA). Already being a big fan of No Age when I heard they were teaming up I made sure to get tickets to an event they were putting on together. The Thing is a quarterly, object-based publication out of SF. Many great artists have worked with The Thing (John Baldessari, Tauba Auerbach, David Shrigley, +many more) and they planned a smaller side project to do with the band. They had a one-night live music event where a limited number of people were invited to a recording of their new album An Object. They made a limited run of 300 cassette tapes the next day and I made sure to grab a copy! Buy your own and check out No Age and The Thing Quarterly’s collab. below !

Details: I bought this newsprint photo booklet last weekend at 8 Ball's Zine Fair at the Billiard Palacade in San Francisco's outer Mission dist. It was a really cool collection of local and not-so-local zine makers and artists. I had actually been following Damien's tumblr for a little while before the fair and had actually added this title to my "books to buy" list once I found it online. It was a lot bigger than I had thought but the size works great with the really clean images and of course the beautiful color tones that tie them all together. Artist: Albert Elm
Description: This is the third copy of the 167 series that I own. This one features photographs by the very talented Albert Elm, a former classmate of mine at the Glasgow School of Art. I was used to seeing his color work in class critiques but was so stoked to see that his keen eye and knack for capturing really interesting images translates in black and white. This, like the others in the series put out by Bronze Age Editions in Glasgow, is a monochrome (black) riso-printed staple-bound zine featuring full bleed images on every spread. I was able to get this copy through Printed Matter (it was the last one available). Check out some press on Albert and his work below as well as Bronze Age !

Details: I picked up this zine at the LAABF this past February from the VUU Collective(vuu-studio) table. I was four months into my monthly zine project and was instantly attracted to the simplicity and various collections of photos within each zine (as this is #10 of 12, 1/month for a year). This was the last of this particular issue on the table and the website is listing it as sold out so I'm very glad to have gotten one. The color photos inside are curated in a humorous and fluid way with plenty of full-bleed action going on. It's a great little publication, I wish I had bought more! Details: This book came to me through a trade I made with a fellow docent at Pier 24 Photography in San Francisco who needed a shift covered. This is a really cool, now out-of-print photo zine put out through RAM Publications (2013) and the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago. It's a loose leaf booklet with a three-part story woven together throughout from previous bodies of Jude's work (with a Twin Peaks sort of vibe) - check out a write up on the book on the MoCP web store and check out Ron Jude's site too!

Title: Speed, 2010
Artist: JD Beltran
Details: This is a flip book/art object that came to me my freshman year at the San Francisco Art Institute. I was in a first year required course where we were able to work with a variety of teachers and explore outside of the medium we were working in. I took a workshop with JD (who is one of the coolest teachers/art makers, as well as an SFAI alumna) and at the end we had a class-wide art swap where we all brought something to trade and we drew numbers as to who would get what. I was lucky enough to get JD's one-of-a-kind flip book called Speed which came in a white plastic rectangular prism box. It's one of the coolest art objects I own by an awesome established SF artists. Check out her website below!

Description: This zine is one of the three Bronze Age Editions books I could get my hands on of the four in the series, it is now out of stock/print. This zine features photography from Glasgow-based artist Nick Lynch (one of the founders of Bronze Age) and is completely riso-printed using a bright blue ink. Description: This is my second book by photographer Kevin Novales from Sleep Talk Press. And once I again I was definitely impressed by the quality and care that goes into making these publications. Nice paper, nice image resolution, clean folds and careful curating make for a finished zine that I'm so happy to now have in my collection! Check out more of this Los Angeles based photographer's work as well as his press' online store and grab yourself a copy of this title or several others that are still available. Also special shout out to the awesome packaging and the set of pins I ordered along with the book, as well as the bonus 11"x17" black and white poster (pictured above).
