Not really Boondocks related, but kind of is.
Do you see mixed people as black? I know Jazmine is biracial, and identified as such.
Iāll be completely honest with you about this question.
My views on biracial people and their identity has been complex to say the least, considering that I have mixed family members. Even then though, I was kind of influenced by other people around me to not view them as black due to their experiences being different from mines as a monoracial black woman.
However, as Iāve grown older and listened to more biracial people and their stories, as well as hearing their explanations as to why many of them identify the way they do (whether itās black, solely mixed or a mixed black person) I see them as a subset of the black identity and experience.
Plus in society, many often get treated as black, especially if they phenotypically look it.
Itās funny you mentioned Jazmine because even when Sarah tried to explain to the principal that Jazmine was mixed race in the comic strip, and to not call her black or white, he still put her down as black.
Even in the unaired pilot episode script, the white students didnāt care about Jazmine having a white mother, lighter skin or green eyes. They knew that she wasnāt white, and teased her for her Afro, as well as her being half black.
A lot of black and white biracial people has even confirmed that many of their white peers and family members saw them as black.
It is messed up that their views are like that. People shouldnāt have to choose between parents when it comes to their racial identity. However, itās a reality that many people have to face.
At the end of the day, I respect biracial peopleās identity choices. If they feel comfortable with claiming both sides of their heritage, they have every right to. Just like they have the right to identify as black.
I still see them as a part of the black community.
Thank you for the question š
Shoutout to @hueyfreemanonlyspeaksthetruth for posting many parts of the comic strips. Iāve been trying to search for the one with the principal forever š
