I feel like I would have been diagnosed with OCD a lot earlier if the vast majority of screening questions (for mental illnesses in general) weren't based on the person's perception of their own behavior, in isolation. and what i mean by that is asking someone with OCD "do you wash your hands excessively?" is not a good question.
a person with OCD believes they are washing their hands the correct number of times. it's not excessive. we believe we're exhibiting best practices and helping to keep everything clean.
better questions might be, "does it seem like you wash your hands a lot more than your friends or family?" "do you get dry patches or cuts on your hands from washing your hands?" "do you find it deeply distressing, more so than how you've seen other people react, when you get something on your hands that you can't clean off right away?"
being asked "are you overly preoccupied with bugs, symmetry, and contamination?" also got "no" responses from me years ago in my life. what they didn't ask for, and didn't know, was what *exactly* I was doing in my day to day life that genuinely ate up my time and mental space to a concerning degree, but I *didn't know* that other people don't do this.
"do you spend a lot of time cleaning?" -> no, it's not a lot. it's a good amount. why?
"do you become frustrated because it seems like no one else meets your organizational and cleanliness standards - do you often 'take over' for other people because they can't do it right - do new friends seem surprised by how strict you can be about your living space?" -> oh. yeah. yeah I get it now.
this is what i mean when i say "sniles so sneetly" btw
i appear to have infected 14k people with the phrase "sniling so sneetly". it makes me grin. snile, even. perhaps sneetly
Oh, the hero is a straight-laced, charismatic, conventionally handsome, neurotypical, heterosexual white man who trusts the government and lives in a bland, flavorless relationship with a subserviant, less-talented woman whose life revolves around him, and I WASN’T supposed to like the villain more? My bad
Any villain: I too once believed in the ruling power, but when I put my faith in it to protect me I was betrayed. The people who did this faced no consequences for their actions, faced no trial, and as we speak continue to do more harm to others. Your justice is a pretty plan in theory, hero, but it is naive- the real world is messy and cruel and unfair, and I plan to rectify that. Too long I have tried other ways to make this system work- it is time to make a change
Conventional Heroman: Killing people is wrong and the government probably had good plans for this death ray
reblog to diminish the horrors from the person you reblogged from
Too much of the Taylor Swift conversation surrounds private jets and not enough acknowledge the fact that her cheap ass merch is being made possible by slave work in honduras. Which I think is actually useful information for people thinking of buying her merch.
jokes aside i think it’s amazing and heartwarming to see like 4chan incel bros perform the miracle of crawling out of that hole and becoming real human beings and chronicling their journey to realizing that they can be well adjusted happy normal dudes
Where’s the post about the guy who turned his life around bc of his shrimp? Bc that’s very relevant here
This guy. This makes me so happy
fake geek girl accusations have always been stupid and misogynistic and racist but the absurdity is really Highlighted when it's megan. megan thee stallion. lying about liking anime for men's approval. to impress whom, jeffrey? tyler, is megan thee stallion so worried about attracting you that she's faking her interests in her own songs? her own chart-topping songs? hunter, are you feeling ok? preston? zachary, do you need a cold wash cloth? how many fingers am i holding up austin
this is so fucking heartbreaking why do we live in such a cruel world
you read the full article and it’s literally just senseless cruelty front to back
sonya massey was a 36-year old (incredibly fucking young) mother of two (a 15 year old daughter and a 17 year old son), both of whom were robbed of their mothers in the most vile, heart-wrenching way. i genuinely short-circuit trying to imagine losing my mother at just 17. i can't imagine how it's like to live w the fact that your mother's very last moments are being shot by a cop after she begged and pleaded not to be hurt. i can't fathom what black american women have to live with and shoulder every single day. it's so cruel. and i already see articles painting this tragedy as a "now maybe people will wake up" but this depicts her as necessary collateral damage, when her children literally just lost her their mother. this should've never happened
I think what's also insult to injury, for these articles you said you're seeing, is that none of the rest of the Black women murdered at the hands of police up to this point were enough. Breonna Taylor was supposed to wake people up. Sandra Bland was supposed to wake people up. It's the added, heartbreaking reminder that us dying has never been enough to be "enough".
99% of "mysterious disappearances" esp of people in their 20s who start acting weird for 48 hours and then vanish are not mysterious, thats just when a lot of reality-obliterating mental illness tends to kick in and it's pretty easy to get a short circuit in your brain that makes you go family guy death pose in joshua tree national park. it's not any less tragic, it's just a documented phenomenon and not particularly predictable. its a big reason the medical advice is for people with a family history of schizophrenia to completely avoid weed and psychedelics. "people just go crazy sometimes" is a principle of human health that used to be a lot more accepted prior to the american midcentury and to a certain extent thats a healthier way to conceptualize and prepare for the risk, as opposed to the modern assertion that anyone acting weird is dangerous and broken forever.
“If you have time to watch Netflix you have time for a side hustle” my side hustle is relaxing so that my body and brain can heal from by this nose-to-the-grindstone bullshit. I refuse to feel guilty for being a human with the need to relax sometimes. my side hustle is no.
whenever i hear about hustle culture i always think about this post on r/antiwork
have you heard of the practice of taking everything out of a backpack, turning the backpack inside out, and then putting everything back in and zipping it up? if so, what did you call it?
yes, I called it nuggeting
yes, I called it turtling
yes, I called it something else
yes, but didn't have a term for it
no, wtf happens in America
If yes, please tell me where ur from in the tags! This was done as a prank and there was no shame quite like having your backpack nuggeted in high school
“His first question was: 'Who's your favourite philosopher?' My heart sank. I wanted to run off and burst into tears. I didn't know any philosophers. And he probably knew I didn't. When I said so, he replied, 'Oh come on, everyone has a favourite philosopher.' It was such a cruel thing to do to a young girl.” “I was desperate and trying not to cry, but I turned the tables on him and asked him to come up with some names – but he couldn't think of any either! Then he said to me, 'I suppose you've read Dickens,' thinking I hadn't. So I said, 'Yeah, I read him at school.' In the end he said, 'Oh, I can't interview her,' and left the stage.”
