Prompt by @eastofthemoon:Â if you're taking prompts, how about the group encountering alien reindeer? be fitting with the holiday. lol
âItâs fluffy!â Lance breathed, hands clutching at his own shirt. Â âItâs so fluffy!â
Shiro frowned at him and stepped forward, like he was going to put himself between Lance and the reindeer if necessary. Â Though it would have been a toss-up if it was to keep the reindeer from charging Lance, or Lance from trying to hug the reindeer. Â âItâs a wild animal, letâs not-â
But Pidge snorted, loud enough to interrupt. Â âYeah, okay, itâs fluffy, but can we talk about the fact that this is yet another Earth species weâve encountered?â
âItâs not exactly,â Keith pointed out. Â âIt has longer fur than the ones on TV. Â And itâs that purple color.â
âFluffy!â Lance agreed, tone aggrieved, and not unlike heâd lost the ability to speak any other words.â
Shaking his head, Hunk frowned. Â âNo, thatâs true. Â This is really close, even if theyâre a little different. Â The lions are a little different too. Â Mostly in the size department.â
Shiro eyed them, slowly dropping his arm when Lance didnât look like heâd launch himself at the deer.  âI think the size is a pretty significant difference,â he pointed out, tone dry.  âI understand what youâre saying, but⊠well, weâve also encountered several dozen bipedal, four limbed and headed aliens.  Maybe some shapes just work better?â
âBesides,â Lance replied, peering past the crop of trees to see the herd better. Â He made a delighted, muffled noise when one of them literally pranced as it moved to a new patch of grass. Â âMaybe they only look like fluffy reindeer right now? Â Itâs not like we can see them that well. Â Itâs pretty dark.â Â Lance turned around and eyed Shiroâs arm. Â âWe should do more research. Â For science.â
Keith shot him a look. Â âItâs not zoology just because you want to moon over the fluffy deer.â
That only made Lance shrug. Â âI think itâs zoology regardless of my level of mooning, actually. Â And like you donât care about the deer.â
Pidge frowned. Â âYou donât want to learn about the fluffy deer?â
âNo!â Â Keith glanced between them all. Â âI thought we were getting back to the castle. Â We can probably look it up there. Â Or do scans.â Â At the four bland looks, he shrugged. Â âIâd rather ask these questions about the lions than those things. Â The lions are kind of more important, and they answer questions. Â Sometimes. Â More than these things.â
âYeah,â Hunk replied. Â âBut the deer are fluffy.â
Keith threw his hands up.
Watching them with open amusement, Pidge nudged Shiroâs side. Â âI mean, a little light wouldnât hurt anything, would it?â
Shiro sighed. Â âI should have worn the armor. Â It has a real flashlight. Â You realize this is a weapon, right?â
âWeâll be careful,â Lance replied cheerfully. Â âLetâs see âem.â
With one last bland look at them all, Shiro huffed but extended his arm and lit it up.
It gave off just enough light to kind of get a better picture of the deer, but not really. Â After all, the light function of the arm was a side effect, so it wasnât exactly focused. Â But it did grab the attention of all the Space Reindeer. Â Who stared back.
Then, their hooves also lit up, it much the same way.
âWhat the hell?â Â Shiro breathed. Â âWhat is- run!â
Because the reindeer were running toward them now.
But before they could run them all over, they started to run up, like they were on a hill. Â Except the ground didnât slope up. Â They started to walk on air.
âFlying fluffy reindeer!â Lance cheered, stopping and spinning around to watch the reindeer as they pranced up and over them, their hooves lit up all colors of the rainbow and humming with energy, much like Shiroâs arm.
Then Keith froze, eyes wide, and pointed. Â âThat one. Â Do you see it?â
Following his gesture, Shiro frowned. Â âMaybe? Â Which one.â
âI think it has a red nose.â
âYouâre shitting me.â
If it was true or not, it was hard to tell. Â There was so much reflected light in the herd, and they were moving so fast that they were gone in minutes, leaving them all staring after.
Keith took a slow breath. Â âOkay,â he allowed, sounding tired. Â âNow I have questions.â
