Do you have recommendations for places to buy hanfu— either irl or online?
Hi, thanks for the question!
Yes, I have recommendations for places to buy hanfu, both online and offline. Please check out my “Where to Buy Hanfu” page, as well as my Q&A Masterpost which has a section on buying hanfu. I also have a “Hanfu Recommendations” tag for my previous recommendations on where to buy hanfu. With that said, here are several additional recommendations for online hanfu shops on Taobao, with lists of the types of items they offer (Women’s hanfu, Men’s hanfu, Children’s hanfu, Wedding hanfu, Modified hanfu, Hanfu accessories). Some of these brands also have offline stores (click name for link to Taobao page):
1. 汉尚华莲/Han Shang Hua Lian - The #1 hanfu brand on Taobao in 2018 by sales value (source). Offers a wide variety of colorful designs. Women’s, Men’s, Accessories:
2. 重回汉唐/Chong Hui Han Tang - The #2 hanfu brand on Taobao in 2018 by sales value. Bold colors and clean, chic designs. Women’s, Men’s, Children’s, Wedding, Modified, Accessories:
3. 十三余/Shi San Yu - The #3 hanfu brand on Taobao in 2018 by sales value. Cute, casual, fun designs. Women’s, Modified, Accessories:
4. 流烟昔泠/Liu Yan Xi Ling - The #9 hanfu brand on Taobao in 2018 by sales value. Known for its matching/couples’ designs, and has a wider variety of options for men. Women’s, Men’s, Children’s, Modified, Accessories:
5. 衔泥小筑/Xian Ni Xiao Zhu - Elegant designs with intricate embroidery. Women’s, Men’s, Children’s, Wedding, Modified, Accessories:
6. 司南阁/Si Nan Ge - Has an aesthetic that can be best described as “ethereal”. Sheer fabrics, billowing sleeves, and lots of layers. Women’s, Men’s:
7. 宴山亭/Yan Shan Ting - Very similar to Si Nan Ge, sharing the same ethereal aesthetic (and even using the same models). Women’s, Men’s:
8. 菩提雪/Pu Ti Xue - Feminine designs with exquisite details. Women’s, Accessories:
9. 锦瑟衣庄/De Ti Yi Zhuang - Classic designs in bright, contrasting colors. Women’s, Men’s, Accessories:
10. 春拾记/Chun Shi Ji - Simple designs paired with elegant traditional Suzhou-style embroidery. Women’s, Accessories:
11. 踏云馆/Ta Yun Guan - Refined designs with minimal embellishments that focus on the beauty of color and fabric. Women’s, Accessories:
12. 瞳莞/Tong Guan - Classy designs that marry traditional aesthetics with modern sensibilities. Women’s, Men’s, Accessories:
13. 汉客丝路/Han Ke Si Lu - Ming dynasty designs with authentic patterns and high-quality fabric. Women’s, Men’s, Wedding:
14. 游园惊梦/You Yuan Jing Meng - Flowing designs that seem to come out of a fairytale dream. Women’s, Modified:
15. 远山乔/Yuan Shan Qiao - The more traditional spin-off label of well-known modified hanfu/hanyuansu brand 川黛/Chuan Dai. Like its sister brand, whimsical designs for the inner girly girl. Women’s, Accessories:
16. 竹里馆/Zhu Li Guan - One of my personal favorites, having bought two outfits from here. Fine fabrics and solid craftsmanship. Women’s, Accessories:
17. 乔织/Qiao Zhi - Casual, versatile, eminently wearable designs. Women’s, Accessories:
18. 织造司/Zhi Zao Si - Many casual and dressy designs, with an especially large selection of mamianqun. Women’s, Men’s, Children’s, Wedding, Modified, Accessories:
Of course there are a lot more great hanfu shops out there, but hopefully this gives you a place to start. Hope this helps, and have fun! ^^
Bonus - For non-Taobao hanfu shops, please check out my post here. I also have a list of recommended brands for modified hanfu/hanfu-inspired designs (hanyuansu) here and here; a rec list for hanfu hair accessories shops here and here; a rec list for weimao here; and a rec list for qipao here ^^
Qipao/Cheongsam Taobao Shop Recs
A while ago I received a direct message asking for recs on where to buy qipao/cheongsam, and I figured I’d make a post for others who’d also be interested.
First of all - I think qipao should be tried on and bought in-person if at all possible, since having the right fit is important - especially if it’s for a formal occasion like a wedding. However, since that’s often not possible, I’ve compiled a list of online shop recs, mainly for more casual occasions.
Since English-language online qipao shops are plentiful and easy to find, I’ll be focusing this list on Taobao shops only. Please note that these are my personal recs, based on my own aesthetic preferences. Thus most of the recs are for shops focused on retro-inspired, minguo-style qipao made using the traditional 平裁/pingcai (flat tailoring) method. Also, I have not actually purchased qipao from any of these shops (all my qipao were bought in person) - this is based mainly on how appealing I find the designs.
1. 嬉姷/Xi You - Elegant qipao modelled closely on historical designs, mainly from the Republican era/minguo. Careful attention paid to historical details. My favorite qipao shop to browse for fun:
2. 海上芳时/Shanghai Fancy - Specializes in chic minguo-style designs of the 1920s-1940s. Recently came out with a neat art deco-inspired collection:
3. 唐之语/Tang Zhi Yu - Retro-style qipao in a variety of bold prints, with a focus on the form-fitting designs of the 1950s-1960s, including those from the film “In the Mood for Love”:
4. 繁莳/Fancy Dream - Dreamy, delicate retro-inspired qipao and modified qipao. Also has a nice selection of winter majia (vests):
5. Top Ulara - A large selection of classic, retro-style qipao with a hint of glamour. Offers lots of long/thick/layered qipao suitable for colder weather:
6. 梦回故里/Menghui Guli - Nostalgic, conservative retro-style qipao for all seasons. Old-fashioned in a good way:
7. 晴山制衣/Qingshan Zhiyi - Retro-style qipao in fresh, vivid colors and an interesting variety of designs and patterns:
8. 限时赏味/Xianshi Shangwei - Streamlined, retro-style qipao in subtle colors and prints that exemplify understated elegance:
9. 茉茉/Momo - Tons of options for simple, cute, and casual retro-style qipao suitable for daily wear. Designs tend towards monochromes and all-over prints. Another review/rec here:
10. 如及/Yu Gallery - Simple yet elegant retro-style and contemporary qipao. I love the shop’s use of sheer fabrics & layering in its designs:
11. 向南飞FLY - Offers a selection of casually stylish retro-style qipao and modified qipao for daily chic:
12. 川黛/Chuan Dai - Soft, feminine, pastel-infused qipao & modified qipao in retro-inspired and contemporary styles:
13. 四斤自制/Sijin Studio - Creative, avant-garde takes on (modified) qipao & qipao-inspired outfits:
14. 密扇/Mukzin - Colorful, playful, and irreverent modified qipao and qipao-inspired outfits. There’s also an English website here:
If you like the above qipao but still want an English website, there are several Taobao resellers that carry similar designs - for example, Beth and Brian Qipao. The hanfu shop Nuwa Hanfu also offers a carefully curated array of qipao, including plus-size qipao.
Finally, when it comes to in-person shops, I want to highlight Xiangjiang Silk Co., a relatively new boutique in New York City specializing in actual vintage 1950s-1960s qipao. There’s an article here on the boutique and its founder Heather Guo (who was featured in Vogue). Store visits are appointment-only, so you’ll have to reach out to Heather via her social media if you want to drop by.
If anyone has reviews of the above shops and/or more qipao shop recs, please share! ^^
Bonus: I also have online shop recs for hanfu (1, 2), modified hanfu/hanyuansu (1, 2), hanfu accessories, weimao, and hair accessories.
everyone start having unethical fantasies about me NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
did i tell u guys i got into an argument on twitter bc i said foxes are dogs and someone tried to bring up their actual fuckin. classification or whatever and i just said “foxes are dogs cause they are fluffye” and they kept arguing with me. the entire time i was like “you will not survive the immigration to tumblr you are lucky we are not there right now”
This is especially funny because they aren’t even right. Foxes *ARE* dogs.
No they aren’t.
yes they are. because they are fluffye.
OK yes they are.
Different family, but same order as @pictures-of-dogs
No, they are the same family. They are the same kingdom, phylum, order and family. They separate at the genus.
They’re a dog.
yeah they’re fluffye
theyre literally not dogs theyre not even fluffy. can we get science tumblr over hear or what!?
checkmate athiests
fluffye
okay but they literally are dogs, for those who are confused
If foxes are dogs, then so are wolves, coyotes, dingoes, jackals, and several other extant and extinct species.
Behold! A dog.
of course it’s a dog you buffoon. it’s fluffye.
Why on earth would someone think “BUT IF THEY’RE DOGS SO AR -”
Like yes of course wolves are dogs, where have you been. Jackals are excellent doggies! So are coyotes. Why is this confusing.
I love that this is literally two completely different arguments running simultaneously.
That guy up there who said they’re not even fluffy was thinking of sharks
sharks are also dogs. ravenous water dogs, but still dogs
Sharks can NOT be dogs they are SMOOTH

Re: the last post, the article mentions that some places use clams to test the toxicity of the water. It’s like that in Warsaw- we get our water from the river, and the main water pump has 8 clams that have triggers attached to their shells. If the water gets too toxic, they close, and the triggers shut off the city water supply automatically.
The clams are just better at measuring the water quality than any man-made sensors.
Edit: check out this documentary trailer : https://vimeo.com/408820791
God Bless Our Troops
They hot glued a spring to a clam and gave it full control over the water supply
No of course not, that would be ridiculous.
They hot glued springs to eight clams and gave them collective control over the water supply.
No of course not, hot glue would kill the clams.
The used silicone adhesive to attach springs to eight clams and gave them collective control over the water supply.

For several years, Viktor’s leg caught my eye—specifically, I was searching for an official diagnosis and struggling to find something that fit him. After years of speculating, I believe I've found his condition's proper diagnosis and name.
Viktor has a rare and severe case of femoral anteversion in his right leg.
What exactly is femoral anteversion? It is a condition in which the femur rotates, causing the knees and feet to face inward rather than forward. This can impact one or both legs. This condition usually resolves on its own, but more severe cases require medical intervention such as leg braces, therapy, and surgery in more extreme instances—however, this condition is treatable.
This condition impacts children, typically the result of trauma, fetal development, or genetics. Viktor was likely born with this, which would propose that he’s either genetically predisposed to it or the result of a tough pregnancy.
This small scene is an excellent example. It’s only several seconds long, but here we can see that his leg is rotated inward, and he corrects it to face forward—which pains him as he visibly winces—all while Jayce speaks.
It’s noticeable when he’s a kid. You can see how his leg twists and faces inward and how his foot catches on the heel of his other foot, which causes him to trip. In episode 8, while he runs on the dock, he almost trips from this issue again before catching himself and sprinting. Viktor also has an in-toe gait; his step curves as he walks, while his other leg does not.
His leg brace, which we see in Act 2, serves one primary purpose: to force the leg to rotate and face the proper direction. However, at this stage, his condition has been left untreated for so long that it is progressing and showing a drastic impact on his entire body that the leg brace will not fix. It also makes mobility even more challenging for him, with difficulty bending and extending his leg.
This condition can throw the entire body out of whack if left untreated. It can cause pelvic issues, osteoarthritis, spinal decompensation, labral and chondral damage, hamstring-originated tendinopathy, and even weakening of the abdominal muscles, as well as a wide range of spinal problems. The feet, hips, and back are significant body parts that work together; if one is bad, the rest will suffer.
Viktor would require a femoral derotation osteotomy; however, given the severity of his condition and how other parts of his body are now significantly impacted--such as his pelvis and spine, we now have more complications on our hands and that's not even touching on his unnamed lung disease.
There's still so much I could discuss here, and perhaps later, after work; I have a handful of notes I've taken about this and how it all just ties together for Viktor, and honestly, it has been really fun to look at and analyze.
✦ so we had a whole situation with r/DottoreMains lol
wizard college is going to kill me I swear to god. I just saw someone without a component satchel reach into their pocket and pull out a handful of LOOSE tapioca to use as a substitute for blood in their fell ritual. and it worked. I've never been so fucking mad.

Does Urag go-Shug mean NOTHING to you people??
genuinely, i think watching live theatre can improve your media literacy so much
like people who look at doctor who and are like 'lol the effects are so rubbish'
maybe watch a stage play where there's no backdrops and half the characters are played by the same three guys in different hats and maybe you will calm down
People who were raised on Marvel movies simply don’t understand the beauty of a well made and executed practical effect
You ever seen a person in all black operating a bird puppet? No you haven’t because we’ve all agreed to ignore the people dressed in all black. That’s a bird.
The show I just finished working on included a carriage chase that was conducted with actors on moving staircases that folded open into carriages, which were mostly stationary except when they were turned by the actors manipulating them, and the whole chase was communicated with projections, lights, and sound (and acting of course). At one point a character jumped from one carriage to another in slow motion, which is to say, an actor wearing all black lifted him and brought him across as he "leapt". Audiences fucking loved it.
Theatre's ability to create worlds with paper and string and a hat or two is one of my favorite things about it. For those two hours we all agree that the man in the brown hat is one person, and then when he switches to the blue hat he's another person. It's seamless and simple and is at its heart an act of community storytelling and I love it.
