Dean Winchester and “Carry On”

Ok I have ranted about this on twitter already but I need to get it out of my system:

I think part of why I’m so extremely thrown off by this finale is that of all the people I had imagined they would screw over, I never thought it would be Dean.

For years I’ve unconsciously prepared for a shitty end for Cas, for Eileen, for Charlie and the whole Wayward gang. Because, no matter how sad it might sound, that’s my experience with Supernatural. Everyone who is not Sam or Dean is to some extent disposable, and at any time we should be prepared to lose them without a proper goodbye or a satisfying ending. I just never imagined they’d get Dean too.

Dean Winchester in my mind has always been one of the two people I was certain would get to enjoy his life once everything was over. Because that’s where the show has been hinting at for years, when it’s all over they can retire and enjoy the peaceful ending they worked so hard for. I figured that, in the worst case scenario where Cas would not make it, at least Dean would get out. And I found some comfort in that.

But last night I watched his entire character arc, everything he fought for in the past 15 years, go up in smoke. Dean, who had just started to accept himself as more than just a weapon, died in the exact way he wasn’t ever supposed to. On the job, having experienced 1 or 2 weeks of true freedom at most. Dean, who by all means was supposed to grow old and have a peaceful retirement. Dean, who sacrificed everything for so many years, died in the first 20 minutes of a MOTW episode as a plot device to launch Sam into a (quite miserable) retirement. I never want to watch that scene again, I’ve been feeling sick because of it all day.

Dean Winchester, more than anyone, deserved the whole world. And I cannot believe that small chance at peace was so heartlessly taken from him.

They couldn’t even give Dean a better death? A goddamn spike in the back that was nailed into the post of a barn? Really? That’s what did Dean Winchester in? The greatest hunter of all time?

And then Jack? Where was he? He was apparently just cool with that?

And Sam didn’t even try praying to him either? Sam Winchester… the boy who slaughtered demons and made deals with the literal devil just to save his brother, he couldn’t even be like “Hey, Jack? A little help here?”

And then Castiel was apparently out of the fucking Empty and in heaven, and he already fucking died in order for Dean to live, yet you’re tellin me he didn’t come down and bust through the doors of that barn the second Dean said he was fading fast like, “Nuh uh! Not today, you god damn emotionally constipated asshole! You ain’t dyin like this!”

You mean to tell me that Castiel, Mr. I Love You, himself– didn’t even care? Not even enough to be the VERY FIRST ONE to meet Dean in heaven?

NO. UH UH.

SPN writers, you have done us dirty in the past, but this had to be the most out-of-character any of the boys have ever been, and I just can’t buy any of it.

I’d like my money back please.

the fact that they not only killed dean off early in the episode but did it in the way that completely contrasts his character arc and development. he always thought he'd go down swinging and that's exactly why he shouldn't have, because the blaze of glory speech was always a defense to hide his fear, because he shouldn't have to cater to his father's ideas, because the whole point of the season was defying destiny and yet here he is, fulfilling the one event he always believed he was destined for.

very bad montage with horrible music. dean’s got a dog now (thankfully not the poodle he tried to fuck in season 9). they go somewhere. sam asks dean if he is sad that cas is in turbo hell. dean’s like ‘yeah shits sucks i guess’. he’s a little sad but that’s not going to stop him from going to the pie eating competition. they attend the pie eating competition. they do ok probably. but then.. uh-oh! a new group of villains is introduced! they’re.. juggalos? but also vampires which is scary. and.. they have knifes! but dean’s going to kill them with his shuriken. oh..! but another twist! one of the juggalos—who is not dressed like a juggalo—is a woman(!) that has been on the show before. dean kills her. but not with his shuriken. and maybe he should have killed her with his shuriken because—twist! dean gets impaled somehow. he dies. no, but for real this time. he’s dead. kill your gays 100% speedrun. sam burns his body. sam only makes one slice of toast for breakfast next morning. very sad. he grows old. you can tell his old because he is wearing a gray wig. he marries. have kids etc. meanwhile dean is in heaven. he reunites with his one true love—the impala. bobby is also there. he tells dean that cas has fixed up heaven for him. but cas isn’t allowed to be in heaven. probably because he’s gay. he never appears in the episode. dean goes for a car ride. carry on my wayward son plays on the radio. it sounds bad. sam puts on a whiter wig. this means he’s very old now. sam dies because he’s old. he goes to heaven. he meets dean. he reunites with the car. cas is never mentioned again. is he still in turbo hell? maybe. dean and sam looks into the camera homophobically. they mock you for still watching the show. the end.
