Just watched Adam Conover (of Adam Ruins Everything) make such a solid point that I think we should spread far and wide. Yes, having AI write your emails is lazy, sure, but people love being lazy. We need to really emphasize that sending AI emails (or using AI responses on social media, or publishing AI flyers, or or or) is rude.

It's rude. You're making someone take their time to read something you couldn't bother to write. You're telling them they were so unimportant you couldn't be bothered to actually take the time to say something yourself. And frankly, you're lying about it while you're at it.

Hate that the term "post-nut clarity" gets applied to guilt and shame people feel after watching porn or having sex. These feelings aren't any more real or reasonable that the horniness was. You don't have clarity, you're just not horny anymore and grew up in a culture that told you to be ashamed of sex and masturbation.

Seeing how fascism has spread worldwide through nationalist sentiment like "Britain isn't British enough" really highlights how individualism impacts people's sense of belonging, and how supposed "natural" identities like connection to place of birth, are not natural and require participation. Participation which is often controlled by participation in collective labour, which has been captured by capitalist property rights.

With the Pope's opposition to AI, I've seen a lot of people joking about converting to catholicism so they can tell their employer that it's against their religion to use AI. I think this also raises the issues of "why are secular people's moral objections unrecognised in the workplace?"

random PSA, I know a lot of people use duckduckgo as a Google alternative search engine, but it always kind of annoyed me when I was using it because it felt like No Name Brand Google

I have switched to using Startpage.com and vastly prefer it. for one thing, instead of displaying an "AI summary" at the top of the search results (unless you turn it off, yes I know), it displays the first paragraph of the Wikipedia article, with link, whenever it finds one that's relevant.

Absolutely disgusted to hear that 87% of employers allegedly use AI to process recruitment applications, and that it has been reported that the AI promotes AI written applications above human written applications. This is creating an unnecessary barrier between employers and prospective employees, that allows AI middle men to extort job seekers. Use our software or be stuck without a job. Considering how much money that AI companies need to pay off the money that has been invested in AI tech, creating this barrier would force AI usage to increase, because jobs are being held out of reach.

At face value, this is a ridiculous headline. But the article then says his managers berated and insulted him for leaving the party after an anxiety attack, and the company then fired him for taking days off work for “unsafe work practices,” due to having anxiety?

There’s so much more to it as well. He repeatedly asked the company not to throw a party for him due to his anxiety (apparently this is standard practise for their office and he knew it would be triggering for him) and they “forgot” about his request. On the day in question, he predictably had a panic attack and went to his car to do breathing exercises.

The next day he was called into a meeting where he was insulted and grilled about “ruining the party” and “stealing his co-workers’ joy”, which caused him to have another panic attack and start doing coping behaviours like hugging himself, at which point his employers decided he must be angry and was going to turn violent. They then suspended him for days and later told him he’d been fired.

So yeah, it’s not over an “unwanted birthday party”, it’s over employers repeatedly failing to accommodate someone’s disability, trying to frame them as the villain for having accessibility needs, and firing them for not conforming to some stupid office politics.

this applies to almost every headline like this you see. it’s the media’s job to launder the reputations of corporations.

remember that the mcdonald’s hot coffee lawsuit was because the coffee was so hot it resulted in third degree burns, because mcdonalds kept the coffee at near-boiling temperatures, and that the famous lawsuit was only one of many similar incidents of people with severe burns. mcdonalds already knew it was dangerous and kept doing it to save money. they did the math that a few lawsuits over grievous injuries was cheaper than keeping their coffee at a safe temperature.

remember that the twinkies and diet coke defense wasn’t a case of the courts being absurdly ridiculous and genuinely accepting an obviously fake excuse. it was the courts blatantly accepting an obviously fake excuse because the murder victim was gay.

In hindsight, I feel like the Millennial pivot to Experiences over Stuff, ultimately was to the benefit of tech oligarchs and the ruling class, because we essentially chose Bread & Circuses, over getting angry and organising against systemic violence.

The mentality of "we can't afford houses, so fuck it, we'll spend our money on vacations" was just kicking the can down the road, and the social media platforms became a tool for us to constantly be supplied with new experiences (and also the fear that if we're not plugged in, we'll miss out on experiences) and allowing for the new market of vicariously-lived experiences, where likeable influencers who you have a parasocial bond with, get to have experiences and you get the joy of your "friend" having these experiences.

All the while, living standards get worse. Still can't afford a house, but you can take on debt with pay later apps like Klarna, and you still have enough joy to keep the riots at bay.

I feel like we're already seeing this delayed anger finally bubbling through. With the price of living and the price of oil spiking, even the placating experiences and goods are getting out of reach. The ruling class are failing to jingle their keys at us, and Generative AI is failing to be adopted as the new distraction.

We should have been in the streets sooner, but those damn Breads and Circuses were just too enticing.

I wonder how many people are having the feeds filled with "how to succeed on social media" posts, at a time where a) people are struggling financially due to shit job markets and an ever-increasing cost of living, and b) where AI tech companies, that are failing to make a profit on the unpopular technology they invested trillions in, which requires massive amounts of new data to remain functional.

Feeling kind of paranoid about posting art on social media, because I've been getting a lot of reels on Instagram encouraging me on "how to succeed as an artist on Instagram", but the conspiracy part of my brain is thinking that platforms want to encourage people to post as much as possible because the continued growth of Generative AI relies on increasingly larger amounts of data, and it's likely that the boom of AI generated art has discouraged artistic users from posting, so they need to convince artists that posting art on these platforms is actually rewarded, hence these videos are being pushed into my algorithm. Probably not though, but that's how I'm feeling.
