My college course in logic taught that truth, validity, and soundness were different things. True means that a fact is a real fact, not a misunderstanding or mistake or lie. Valid means that the argument is well structured: if these facts are true, then this conclusion is also true. Sound means that an argument is both valid and true. All the facts are true and based on the facts the conclusion makes sense.

Many of the things our political enemies believe are valid. If the world actually worked the way they think it works, their opinions and decisions would be reasonable. Unfortunately they're starting from premises that are just 100% untrue, like "Men and women are basically different species".

You would think this meant that all you had to do to change someone's mind about a topic is to convince them that their facts are wrong! Unfortunately that just kind of doesn't work very well for psychology reasons.
