Neal watched as Allison ran her lithe fingers through her hair, a gesture that he knew was his doing. He blinked, leaning down so that his elbows were on the table, his palms resting on his forehead, fingers tangled in his own hair. She was going through the same thing he was, though likely worse. She was eighteen, he was thirty-six. She was at the prime of her life, carrying the baby of a man whom she admittedly loved but who was still taking medication prescribed by asylum doctors. And yet, here she was, standing in front of him, watching as he reacted in the worst possible way to news that would have come up at one point or another anyway.
"So, that’s why you…left?" His voice was soft, broken as he looked up at her. She looked so small in that moment, hurt by what he had said, how he had acted. Giving a short breath, he reached across the table and grabbed her hand, his fingers going over hers to give it a soft squeeze. "I’m…I’m happy, Allison. Really. I can’t…I can’t imagine having a baby with anyone else.
In an instant, before he even knew what he was doing, he leaned across the table and captured her face with his palms, kissing her like the first warm day after months of snow. He whispered “I love you” against her lips, kissing her a few more times before he leaned back, grinning.
An idea played in his mind, like a video tape, over and over. Before he could stop himself, he started the illustration. “Mozzie and I did a heist a few years back,” he began, starting to walk away from her, towards the bedroom. He spoke louder so that she could hear him even as he exited the room completely to dig through his closet. “It was all jewelry and other trinkets they found on the Titanic. Anyway, the heist was a bust - nothing of real value. However,” he explained, pausing as he pushed a shoebox aside to reveal the much smaller box he was looking for. “There was one piece that I couldn’t resist.”
He made his way back into the kitchen, laying the box on the table and tapping it with his index finger. “Now, when I stole this piece, I knew I was going to give it to a girl who appreciated it, a girl who I was going to spend the rest of my life with. I wasn’t thinking, however, that I was going to give it to a girl who I met while I was incarcerated, a girl whose father would probably kill me if I didn’t, a girl who was going to be the mother of my child.” He smiled at her, his brilliant smile that was reserved for the times when he was unfathomably happy. “Open it.”
He stood as he watched her open the box, revealing a teardrop diamond with two circular ones on either side, a silver band holding them together. Sinking down to one knee, he looked up at her. “Allison, I would like nothing more than to see you in white, wearing that stolen ring, marrying the con-man who gave it to you.”
Allison watched him carefully, still trying her hardest to get some sort of feeling from him regarding the news. It scared her, it honestly did. She was only eighteen and she was pregnant, starting a life with a man whom she loved but had never actually spent a day of real life with outside of the asylum but she also knew, she wouldn't have the baby with anyone else.
"Why I was kicked out." Allison clarified, voice still small as she raised eyes to look at him for a second. When he spoke, Allison kept steady eye contact, wanting to make sure everything he said was nothing but the truth. The moment her dark browns met his clear blues, she knew he wasn't lying to her. He was happy, he wanted to have this family with her and when he kissed her, it only confirmed it for her. It was a kiss that stole her breath away, a kiss that would have made her knees buckle if she had been standing, a kiss that left a bright smile on her lips as he pulled away from her. "And I love you." Allison whispered back. They were having a baby, a family and Allison couldn't have been happier.
Allison's brows furrowed when he suddenly got up, explaining the story of heist. She didn't follow him, getting the clear impression that he wanted her to stay seated. So she waited, the tips of her fingers tracing over the wine glasses as she listened to him. When he came back, Allison's eyes immediately zoned in to the small velvet box he placed on the table in front her. Her heart rate sped up slightly in surprise, shocked eyes rising to meet his as he spoke to her. There was no way he was doing this now.
With shaky hands, Allison opened it at his instructions. A lump formed in her throat as the ring stared back at her. A beautiful piece of jewelry, a stolen artifact in her hands. A chocked laugh came from her as she saw him kneel down in front of her sitting form, tears welling in her eyes. She looked up at him, his proposal ringing in her ears. It was then that the tears of joy fell from her eyes, streaming down her cheeks. "I'd love nothing more than to marry the con-man who stole my heart." Allison choked out, a blinding smile painted on her cheeks.as her palms cupped his cheeks and pulled him in for a kiss. It was a kiss that spoke every ounce of love she had for him, every ounce of happiness and heartache they had suffered together. A kiss that sealed her promise that she would never do him wrong and that she was his forever. "I love you so much."
She never thought she would meet the one she was made for in an asylum, she never thought she would marry a con-ma, but she couldn't picture a better man to have by her side,a better man to start a family with.

Neal swirled the drink in his glass before taking a sip, looking over the rim at her when she protested. Chuckling, he sat the glass down. “I know you’re not 21, but I won’t tell your dad. Promise,” he teased, taking another sip of the burgundy liquid in the glass.
The glass was pressed to his lips again, the top of the rip at the bridge of his nose, when he heard the news. He sputtered for a moment, coughing in surprise. “You’re…you’re…? Oh…” He breathed out, sitting the glass down on the table and pacing back toward the kitchen, then back toward her. Then back to the kitchen. Back to her. Process repeat.
The only thing he could think of was his own father, how lousy he’d been. A crook. A criminal. He was a cop, sure, but deep down he was still a law-breaker. It reminded him of himself. What kind of father would he be? Would he end up pawning the kid off on Allison if things went south? Walking back toward the table, he picked up his glass and drained the content, hastily picking up Allison’s after and downing it as well. Coughing and running his hand through his hair, his eyes rose to meet hers again, biting the inside of his lip. “Okay…okay, so…you’re pregnant,” he said slowly, approaching her, grabbing her hand again. “We’re having a baby.”
Allison watched him carefully, giving him the time she had not been given to fully take in the information. She wasn't sure what to take from his reaction. She knew it was a lot to take, she still had trouble believing it herself, but now, she was suddenly unsure about all of this. They had more or less already planned a life together but she didn't want him to feel tied down to her just because she was pregnant.
"Oh..." Allison muttered out, watching as he gulped down not only his glass but her own too. Her eyes stayed on him as he approached her, speaking the words almost as to make himself believe it. Allison squeezed his hand and stood up. "I know this is unexpected." Allison told him, she let go of his hand and ran her fingers through her own neatly curled hair. "I'm sorry." Allison apologized, not quite sure why she was apologizing. Maybe it was simply because she had thrown him, them, this curve ball they hadn't planned for.
Allison crossed her arms over her chest and sighed, thinking back to what had happened the last few days. "Carter thinks I'm about three months along. June already made an appointment for me and the baby to be checked." She informed him, voice still small. She wasn't sure what to expect from him. For once, Allison found him hard to read but that might just because she was afraid of what she might find if she tried to read him. She didn't know if he was happy or even okay with this development.

Neal swayed slightly at the sight of her, the fading sunlight shining in her hair. As she confirmed that it was indeed her, he let out a breath that he hadn’t realized he’d been holding. This wasn’t a figment. This wasn’t his imagination. This wasn’t brought on by an excess or lack of medication. This was Allison standing underneath the sunset, looking at him with tears in her eyes. This was real.
It took him off guard slightly when she leaped into his arms, but he still held her close to him. He swayed with her for a moment, savoring the feeling of her body next to his, something he’d been afraid he’d never have again. “I thought I’d lost you,” he admitted, his lips pressed to her collarbone, eyes closed. “God, I thought you were gone.”
After a moment, he lowered her down to the ground, grabbing her hand quickly. He wouldn’t let go again, not for the world. “I can’t believe you’re here…in New York…at my apartment…under the sunset.” A smile curved on his lips as he leaned in to embrace her again, pulling back only to kiss her. Slow. Sweet. Perfect. “I’ve always wanted to kiss you under the sunset,” he whispered against her lips, brushing a strand of her hair back behind her ear. He perked up then, an idea forming in his mind. “We need to celebrate,” he declared, squeezing her hand with a grin. “Come on.” With a sudden rush, he lead her back into the apartment, sitting her down at the table and heading towards the kitchen and pulling out a bottle from the wine rack, grabbing two glasses and sitting them on the table. Quickly, he uncorked the wine, letting it breathe for a moment. “This is a 1982 Château La Lagune. Great year for the Médoc,” he explained as he poured the wine into each glass.
Allison relished the feel of his arms wrapped around her body, savoring the feeling of having him pressed against her. She had been terrified she wouldn't get to feel this again. Allison sniffled against his neck, lips pressing a tender kiss there as she shook her head. "I would never leave you." Allison breathed, pulling him tighter.
When he lowered her down, Allison laced their fingers together, eyes never leaving him. "I wasn't going to leave you there." Allison reached up and cupped his face, lips meeting his in soft kiss, tender. It was a feeling like no other. When they broke up, Allison let her eyes stay closed, just smiling as he whispered to her. She leaned into him, happiness the only emotion that filled her. She didn't think she'd get this again. When he spoke up, Allison grinned and tighten her grip on his hand. She followed him back into the apartment, a laugh coming from her at the excitement and joy that surrounded them.
However, when she sat down at the table and saw what he brought out, Allison swallowed. She eyed the red alcohol in the wine glass and looked back at up at him with a small smile. "I can't have that." Allison spoke up, watching his expression take on a look of confusion. "You should sit." She waited for him to take a seat and when he did, Allison reached out and grabbed his hand. She kept her eyes on their locked fingers for a moment before taking a deep breath. "Carter kicked me out of COPH. I fainted and she took some blood tests." Allison glanced up at him and locked eyes with him, suddenly unsure how he would take the news. "I'm pregnant, Neal."

Things were crazy after Allison had spoken to Peter. The FBI immediately started to investigate the hospital, bring up all the paperwork that was needed to get Neal out of there and back to work for the FBI. As the craziness started, Allison was led out of the building with Peter. They rode a taxi together to June's. All the while, Peter asked her questions, almost interrogating her in a way a father who was worried over their son would. Allison answered everything he wanted and when she was asked if she really loved him, Allison met his eyes head on and told the agent that she loved Neal like she had never loved anyone before. Peter must have found what he wanted in her eyes because he smiled and nodded.
They finally made it to June's and it was then that she met the lady that had given Neal a true home. After the initial greeting, she sat down with June and Peter, retelling the story she had told Peter back in the office.Again, she cried as all the pain-filled memories held onto her thoughts. Once she had calmed down, Peter had stood up, assuring her he would be back in the morning. He left and June helped her get settled in Neal's apartment. That night she fell asleep alone in his couch, not wanting to sleep on the bed without him.
The days went by in that fashion. She spent most of her time with June downstairs, playing with Bugsy. June had set up an appointment for her and baby to be checked in a week. Her dad shipped over all her clothes to New York for her to have and opened an account for her with a few hundred dollars for her to spend on her needs. A few days after she had arrived, Peter stopped by and told her that they were going to get Neal that day. That was enough to make Allison cry all over again. She hadn't realized exactly how much she missed him or worried about him until she knew he was coming home.
The day Neal was due to come, Allison had hardly slept, to antsy to even lay down really. She spent the better part of the morning with June before heading back upstairs to show. She wasn't sure exactly sure when he would come home but she had spent the rest of the day outside in his roof, watching the New York City skyline. It was when she heard his whistling, movement inside, that Allison's heartbeat stopped for a moment, watching as he moved inside but he hadn't seen her yet. Brown eyes stayed on him as he made his way to the roof and when he opened the door, when Allison saw him actually there in front of her, she gave a broken laugh when he spoke her name, tears filling her eyes as she looked at him. "Yeah it's me." She barely whispered, voice cracking under the emotion. It was hard to just stand there watching him so Allison ran, ran to him and jumped. Legs wrapped tightly around his waist, Allison cupped his face, kissing him with every ounce of love and passion in her body. "He actually did it. You're here, you're here." Allison cried, kissing his cheeks, nose, jaw and finally burying her face in his neck. She inhaled, taking in the scent she had missed so desperately and sobbed. They were back together, back where they belonged.

It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. Seasons are changing And waves are crashing And stars are falling all for us Days grow longer and nights grow shorter I can show you I'll be the one
'cause I'm broken when I'm lonesome and I don’t feel right when you’re gone away you’ve gone away you don’t feel me here anymore
