isabela's entire character arc is about personal freedoms and how she will fight tooth and nail for hers, yours, anybody's, up to and including total strangers (but especially women's). her conflict in a romance subplot is in learning that it is okay to connect yourself to other people by silken lines, to sacrifice a bit of that endless freedom on the altar of trust and heartrendingly unconditional love.

and in a friendmance, hawke looks back at isabela and sees the sea, sees freedom, and simply says, you helped my heart learn to fly again. please let me soar off the wind from your sails

it’s the idea of a trial and error period that gets to me. like you try it and everyone dies and then you give it another shot as if people dying of darkspawn blood ingestion isn’t, like, a completely known phenomenon

on this line of thought: the mixture still isn't totally refined and the secret Warden blood mages are still trying to come up with a concoction that doesn't sometimes kill people. they're like well it works when it doesn't kill people but it shouldn't have to do that. ideally we should be making new grey wardens every time. but it "works" so their research funding has been significantly cut.
