Average 911 episode is like the team arrives on the scene for a 70 car pile up caused by a suicide bomber with amnesia or something and Athena has to commit police brutality to investigate his backstory, meanwhile Chimney is repelling down the side of a cliff to extract a woman who was cut in half or whatever, and Buck and Eddie are fighting because Eddie did something that Buck perceives as abandonment and Eddie is mad that Buck is mad, but they work together anyway to save a baby that's on fire, and then Eddie gets crushed by a motorcycle and Buck saves him and is like I'm so sorry I never meant it, it's just that, you matter, so much, to me... and Eddie is like It's okay Buck, let me put my hands on your shoulders in a very straight way. And Maddie is mogging in the background and Hen has her hands in man's entire chest cavity. And then the highway blows up

I think Eddie has known he's in love with Buck since the lightning strike. He's probably been in love for longer than that, but the lightning strike was when he KNEW it. That's why he got weird about Natalia. That's why he threw the "You ever meet someone and you just...click?" line in Buck's face re: Tommy. That's why he indulged all of Tommy's attention until the very moment Tommy and Buck got together, and then all of a sudden he's looking at Tommy like something gross he scraped off the bottom of his shoe. That's why he resisted dating again, and when he did get pushed into it, he was awkward and fumbling and subconsciously sabotaged the relationship (she's a nun, also I met someone who looks like my dead wife). That's why he couldn't talk to Buck about moving to El Paso, because it was too painful and he feared he'd give himself away. That's why he couldn't let himself choose to move back for Buck, he had to wait for someone else to push him.

That's why he let Buck lovingly bully him into going out, but it's also why he didn't make any effort to approach any women while they were there. That's why he could only give Ravi a devastating look when Ravi asked how he could be so bad at this.

Eddie has been in love with Buck for a long time, but he thinks he can't tell him, because he thinks Buck doesn't want him. Couldn't want him. When he said, "That's Buck," when Buck ended up picking up two people in one night, he meant, "Buck could have anyone, why would he settle for me?" The guy who drove his wife away. Drove his son away. The guy who doesn't deserve juice.

(This is absurd, of course, because Buck is in love with Eddie too. But crucially, he's not aware of it. He can't even really consider it. He won't even let his mind go there. Because Eddie is straight. And a renter.)
