listening to the frankenstein audiobook naturally and ch5-7 is wild to me bc like. there’s the tiniest gap between victor bringing the creature to life, immediately abandoning it in fear, getting word of Williams death and then instantly jumping to the conclusion that his own creation was the culprit…he’s like Wendy Williams and The Killer

Hey do you guys remember how in the Frankenstein novel the creature is hiding in some cottage and watches a family that lives there and although he cannot understand human language he sees an old man consoling his children with kind words and embracing them and it fills him with such pain and longing he describes it as worse than any cold or hunger he ever experienced? Yeah me neither

Watching the movie and thinking about the book... Book!Creature isn't innocent but he is so very sympathetic. Did he kill innocent people? Yes he did. Did he understand it was bad? Yes he did. But he feels pain from it. He was angry and only had anger because that's all the world gave onto him.

He was born and then Victor abandoned him. He went into the woods seeing the beauty of life and nature only to be shot at and shunned. He found a home a hovel where he watched people he felt could be his friends maybe even his family but the moment he felt a sliver of hope from that it was dashed and he was once again beaten and shunned and spurned.

Why is he the "villain" when others have sinned against him? He's a complex character that while doing diabolical things allows you to feel a feeling of empathy because he is so alone. He never gets a moment of true connection of affection of love. He's alone, truly and utterly alone and once Robert Walton is dead he will have no one to remember his "horrid" and "wretched" form... I just... It makes me so... Yeahhh

personally I think Mary Shelly would be very delighted and touched to know that centuries later millions of people across the world would read the ghost story she wrote at 16 and not only love her grotesque odious monster but collectively empathize with him the same way he always wanted to be loved and empathized with and make him a full on champion of the weird and misunderstood. i mean i just think she would enjoy knowing that he did actually inspire the love and compassion she’d made him to be denied from
