Jury Duty for Felix Martinez was a silly story and on the surface not meant to be read too deeply, but I think it's really important to look at it more carefully and consider why it was generated, whose eyes it was meant for, and what exactly it's doing from that surface-level engagement.
If you haven't come across it, it's a funny little anecdote about a guy whose cat gets summoned for jury duty. Obviously his cat can't appear for jury duty; he is a cat. The cat's owner starts making phone calls to rectify the situation. Nobody knows what to do. Nobody believes him. He goes to the vet and gets a signed statement that Felix Martinez is a cat and unable to perform the role of juror because he has paws and only communicates in meows. The statement is not accepted. Felix is not relieved of duty. Finally, in desperation, he loads Felix into a cat carrier and takes him to the courthouse on the day of the trial to avoid feline felonies, where he is asked why didn't you tell anybody?
Funny story. But the fact that it didn't happen makes this an insidious piece of propaganda packaged up as something your Republican grandma will read, repeat for laughs, and slowly start to stew on.
Because the thing is: in the story Felix isn't just assigned jury duty. He's also registered to vote. He's a cat who got registered to vote, who the incompetent system refuses to unregister, whose owner... could potentially be voting twice on his behalf (even though this perspective character is a Good Guy who would Never). What you're left with at the end of the story is... how often does this happen? How many more pets registered as voters are there? How many people are voting for their dog?
Oh yeah, and the cat's last name is Martinez.
